  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I'm not sure if I'm missing something obvious, but on the epic I had the ethernet connection, but with the weapon that only comes with the redvolt expander (which isn't in the package, for sure not default). So i'm not sure for VR and performance capture what to do for master/slave (i.e. for multi camera rigs how to hook up the master slave relationship). I was hoping to do this through the wireless weapon connection? Do I need to get something like a really trimmed down omod to do this?

#JETPACK

CTRL + SYNC + super compact.
Hmmm ... went through the manual again and it says"NOTE: Master/Slave operation, including stereo/3D and camera arrays, requires a GIG-E port, which is availableon the DSMC2 REDVOLT Expander. For more information, go to “Input/Output Connectors” on page 165. "

Is it possible to do the same in those ports as using the ethernet cable ?
I can't figure this out, I for sure don't want to get two redvolt expanders.

CTRL lemo to CTRL lemo will now allow master slave like GIG-E

Need to make a cable as I'm not sure RED sells yet one with lemo 00 on booth ends ... so you should get 2 x 4-pin-00-lemo-to-flying-lead

then go to MENU > SETTINGS > SETUP > COMMUNICATION and one the SERIAL tab choose CAMERA TO CAMERA and setup MASTER slave as usual

Cool, how many can slave, can you split the cable going fro the master?

only 2 with the CTRL port as far as I know... but I'm no expert in RS232 so it is possible some "routing" solution might exists...

my 'foolcontrol server' software showed at IBC allows master slave over wifi with a lot more cameras and super granular control over master / slave parameters ... but not sure yet if / when it will be ready for release.

OFFHOLLYWOOD has a little 1 MASTER to 10 SLAVES widget coming. Use with OMOD or direct to CRTL ports.

Master/Slave with an OMOD give you selective control of which functions you want to slave - and you can do mare advanced stuff like sync'ing iris with offsets, etc.

There you go!

LMAO Phil > Manual. So this http://www.red.com/store/products/rs232-to-rs232-cable won't work, I'm kind of chicken to make cables since I don't know what I'm doing(i guess there is no power so I can't destroy anything if I mess up the cable?).
My system I'm linking this to is a fairly powerful laptop, using a isolated wireless router (windows 8) that also is sincing two 240 fps systems ... that would be about perfect but I noticed fool control is mac only? I hate to have two laptops running this, but will the smallest mac laptop be able to do this eventually/maybe?
[ note to self, make sure when I turn on the laptop today to disable the windows 10 forced upgrade from windows 8 ... as recomended updates are on for that laptop]

I need to understand OMOD one of these days, also I'd be able to do wireless genlock through this too I think?

Yes that's the perfect cable ! I haven't noticed it was now available :)

Side question, on the weapon Sync cable, there is a genlock and a sync break out(i think this is tri-level sync on the weapon base i/o). For VR and 3D it seems better to me to just use tri-level sync and not the genlock, is that what you guys do ? Tri-level sync is btw what I need to feed to my motion control and performance capture system. Also I need to have 2 camera's and one computer on the tri-level sync, is there a breakout 3 way output for trilevel sync (or is there anough power in trilevel where I can just do two Y's on the output of a generator)?

[ok ... i think i get it ... genlock connection is tri-level sync, and the sync is start/stop]
[hmmm ... the aja gen10 probably looks the best to drive 2 camera's and a computer].

Seeing different answer / approach here that I have been discussing with RED tech support.
Why would you not want to use JetPack SDI with GIG-E and have full master/slave and complete frame / shutter sync with .r3d?
Unless you can't use that adapter for some reason. I have seen nothing from RED about implementing any other protocols / connectivity to support true master / slave.
Once jetpack sdi was released with gig-e that was no brainer for me at least

It is pretty straightforward. OMOD == Awesome!Yes, OMOD supports genlock too. I don't know if all OMOD's support this or just those with ACN support such as the OMOD Command. The Command is the only one I have used.

When I shot 3D on EPIC, I used a Denecke SB-T. It supported both. My SB-T is for sale if anyone wants one. I will throw in a DA and the sync cable too for $500.

So I have read this thread a couple of times now, and the RED manual, but I still don't understand if we can do sensor sync with just a gig-e cable between the cameras? I'm trying to get my cameras synced now, but getting sensor sync with a 50fps (or more) timebase seems difficult?

You can not sensor sync with gig-e cable. In the context of gigE master slave 'sync'ing, this means the syncing of settings. That is you change exposure time on the master camera and the slave is synced to same value. To sensor sync as in 3D, you need to feed a tri-level genlock signal into the 'SYNC' port of both cameras from a single genlock generator. Genlock sources that have a single BNC out, will generally only source one camera. The Aja gen-10 can do many (but no timecode), the Ambient ACL204 can be set to increase drive strength. There were some modified ACL203 that had two BNCs. I think the SB-T mentioned above also has 2 BNCs. You will need the RED 3bnc-lemo cable x2. use the Green BNC for Genlock. Yellow for timecode. We do find that timecode works OK being split to two cameras. In fact I have frequently gotten away with splitting the genlock with minimal cabling. You would have to test that in your rig. you might get lucky. But our official statement is that you should not split the genlock signal unless its boosted to work in that manner (ACL204).

for what is worth, RTMotion is finalising a CTRL port multiplexer that will allow master slave (RCP only, no tri-level genlock sync as this requires separate wiring as explained by Dave above) over CTRL port so you can make camera rigs with more than 2 cameras without going GIG-E... it will also allow other interesting stuff... more info here :

PS : this product was created out of necessity since some of use had a real need for this, and altho the market is limited for such a specialised product, Kris said he should be able to keep the price affordable.
And FWIW (disclaimer) RTMotion products are super foolcontrol friendly and I personally love their stuff but I do not have any direct benefit or interest in RTMotion sales whatsoever.

Thanks Mika! I've been asked a few times for this, and we could use some of them in the office, so we've decided to make them... Price TBC, I honestly don't know, it depends on the interest- I'm not expecting to sell many as it is a specialist part :) So not super cheap, but far cheaper than ethernet modules of course.
