  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED WEAPON - Info and Data Sheets

I'm just curious as to what us current Epic Dragon owners are gaining spec wise when upgrading to a non Vista Weapon. I know we get to continue down the path as it's the end of the line. But if I'm only getting pro-res and a slightly smaller/ cooler looking camera with a smidge better DR and Compression ratio's I don't see the logic to upgrade, unless you want to upgrade to the BIG sensor at some point. I don't know just late night blabbing on. Wish it was NAB so we could know wtf is happening lol

Also likely:

  • Reduced power consumption
  • Higher quality audio recording
  • Streaming R3Ds over a network
  • Recording to two redmags simultaneously
  • Wireless control and preview without an adapter
  • Slicker side handle that charges Redvolts

I see this camera getting 1-2 hours from one new redvolt. That really changes things.

has it been actually confirmed for sure that Pro-Res is built into the camera and not with some module that may need cables and steal a monitor port like the plus one did? I am fine with that if it is the reality but my Epic can already do that with an Atomos so I would hope red could make that same module for the older Epics and Dragons. However If Pro-Res is actually built into the actual brain, then that to me ALONE is worth the upgrade assuming it will be in the same 15k historical price to upgrade. Pro-Res is a game changer and that is the only thing Alexa does better than the red and if they did that then I can finally stop telling producers that they need to wait a day for dailies. Pro-Res also saves me from $6000 Rocket cards for transcodes which is why I am a little bit doubtful that red is actually putting Pro-Res in the brain as they would eliminate almost all of new Rocket card orders going forward.

The no cables thing is an extra bonus. I hate that little 6 inch LCD cable that always gets in the way of changing lenses and I am glad they are finally fixing that.

If there's wireless video without an extra module to an Ipad with almost zero delay that would be revolutionary even without anything else. Say goodbye to monitor cables and complicated exterior shoots.

Hey Jarred,
Love the new design, Really looking forward to getting the order in for a few.
Tell me though, You will keep the right side grip with RED VOLT ? I'm a mega fan of the hand grip with all the thumb controls. Suites my style of working.
Cheers mate.
Good luck in NAB. Go kick some Arri arse,

Agreed the tactile control of th side handle is my preferred way of operating...its way faster then the touchscreen when you have mapped the buttons and dials to your goto operations

Does the Weapon have to have a REDVolt installed in the back to operate?
Is there a clean battery mount option for Anton Bauer / V lock batteries removing the need for RedVolts?

No. jarred has mentioned there will be v mount and Ab mount modules.

Jarred, can two REDVolts be used at the same time on the new XL module (if you are able to answer that is)?

You can actually use just one redvolt on the current XL module.

I'm hoping like on the quad module, multiple redvolts can be used as well as an XL battery. I'm thinking it would make hot swapping batts very convenient and the six Redvolts I currently own might actually get used.

It has been confirmed by Jarred that there is only one set of contacts on the RV module and so only 1 RV or 1 RVXL is possible.

Drag! Is there someone out there that can build an adaptor that takes two REDVolts? :001_rolleyes:

Losing the battery hot swap capability would be unfortunate. I wonder if there is any chance that the new "side controller"/switchblade pro or whatever its called might have enough battery capacity to feed power back into the camera for a minute or two for swapping?

Cheers - #19

Ha! Wouldn't that be a thing. That would be a great idea but I'm not sure that might happen. Jarred did say at some point that there is a replacement of sorts for the side handle. I do like that new switch blade thing on the side but I still have 6 REDvolts That I need to use or get rid of (maybe). Hot swapping is a very convenient process especially when you have to strip the camera down to its bare essentials.

What would be really really really great is if we could get a confirmation on current mini mag side SSD's compatibility with Weapon. This seems to be the hardest angle of the whole upgrade for the majority of owners who still rock standard mags. Once weapon is released everyone will want the minis and trying to sell your regular mags along with a regular side ssd modules but that'll be a tough deal to close. This does not give away any secrets to competitors since everyone already knows that weapon supports minis only. So, Jarred, if that's not a a very important secret - will Weapon support the current mini mag side ssd module or not?

Doesn't support current mini mag side module but I believe it's a trade in thing. see Phil's post on the first page:

Recording Media

- Weapon is not compatible with 1.8" REDMAG Media, it uses MINI-MAG Media however.
- When you trade in your Dragon for the Weapon upgrade include the MINI-MAG Side Module.
- Red is working on a "plan" to assist with those coming from 1.8" REDMAG setups to MINI-MAG. Details unknown as of yet.
- Red has hinted that other capacity MINI-MAG Media cards are in development. Likely a less expensive 256GB-ish model. I'm a 512GB man myself :)

I do believe that question has been answered with a "no" but that is only from memory. I also think I vaguely remember something about an adaptor, an upgrade program or a trade-in.

Hey Vin, I believe there's a 1TB minimag in works too!

1TB are baller, prb $$$$. I'll stick with the 512's for now. btw, those Hassy's are gonna come in handy (I'm sure they already do though).

Yeah the Hassys are great - but I'd love a reason to use them besides Tilt Shifting!
