It seems to me, given Jarred's explanation of the overall RED upgrade paths being sensor change - body change - sensor change that the basic next phase Weapon upgrade will be a Body and electronics upgrade with the same Dragon sensor - where the body has incorporated improved layout, connectors, possibly built in function setup screen like on the Redmote, and the physical size/mounting capability for the Vista sensor - and the internals will have some electronic improvements to give higher frame rates (and less compression) possibly some extended DR and lower power consumption due to internal electronic improvements (more advanced ASIC).
In other words the programs go like this:
Phase 1 R1 to Phase 2: R1MX - to Phase 3: Epic-X same sensor new body - to Phase 4: Dragon sensor same body - to Phase 5: Weapon same sensor new body - Phase 6 Weapon VV
Unless it isn't quite what he seemed to say in the original announcements that the initial Weapon upgrade would be just a body change not sensor change (and it would seem a little silly to push people to upgrade to the dragon sensor in the next few weeks and then immediately turn around and say you are going to replace it with a different sensor.)
If it is the body/internal electronics upgrade I would hope it is in the $4-5K range (or less :wink5If it is a Vista/FF35 sized sensor then a Dragonish upgrade price would be in order.
Also seems that maybe most of the NAB upgrades would be the body change at a fairly easy to swallow upgrade price, with the option of going whole hog to the Vista sensor only in the Carbon model for the much higher price (similar to the Epic-M program but with a new sensor this time) and this may make sense if current yields are fairly low - then down the road we all get the option to upgrade to Vista Weapon sensor and electronics at a price similar to the Dragon upgrade.

This.
Edit: I'm betting that basic body upgrade price will be juuuuust a little bit higher than 4-5K.

I'm assuming the upgrade cost is at least $9,500. Just as other upgrades have been (Scarlet to Epic, MX to Dragon). I'm guessing the Vista Vision is significantly more - twice that at least? $19,000?
... As long as you are a Dragon owner before NAB, you will get a nice chunk of change back to continue along the journey.
for the VV sensor, absolutely more... most likely quite a lot more!
I meant just the body upgrade; perhaps a good chunk of the internals from Dragon carry-over w/ the sensor.
...perhaps what was meant by the "save a big chunk" phrasing by upgrading an existing dragon.
Weapon looks like a whole new cam, with all new internals. I'm guessing the boards/internals have much more horespower. I don't think it wil be cheap (like 5K).
No. Because there is also a path for Scarlet Dragon owners, which is awesome if you remember that at one point Scarlet Dragon was supposed to be "end of the line".
That's exactly what I'm putting into my budget. I'll probably only be able to afford one VV camera, i might keep my 2nd as a epic dragon depending on the upgrade to weapon cost. I do like two camera coverage but VV gets so wide it's often hard to setup the 2nd camera anyway. I am just so ridiculously excited on the VV format, I think it will fit both of our lens collections perfectly.I'm assuming the upgrade cost is at least $9,500. Any mention of power input?
It doesn't seem too top secret to spill whether the lemo power cables on existing 3rd party battery plates would work on Weapon.
Uh oh!
