  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED WEAPON - Info and Data Sheets

I guess this puts us close, if not right on the money height wise for proper anamorphic 4:3 coverage.

What other glass will cover the full vista-frame - Schneider Xenons and Leica Summicron-C I presume...

Judging by the black color of the mount, that's the magnesium blend for Carbon weapons only.... and perhaps that sensor growth is the extra bump for the Carbon line only. I'm imagining a few more people taking that leap if that's the case.

That's my guess too. Vista Vision is for Carbon. I'm guessing it's 50K brand new. And upgrade is 30K. But value? Priceless!!! Haha.

so what would vista bring? Would it be similar from going from apsc to full frame on a dslr? So more dof, better low light etc? any other things it would add?

The pixels are same size as Dragon....so not sure if its going to be better at lowlight...but the extra K/resolution will surely make it sharper and easier to denoise?

Though Jarred has mentioned that Weapon gets more out of Dragon sensor, so I'm assuming Weapon is better at lowlight across the board. Maybe even 5000 iso clean.

FF35 will mean 7000x4650 pixels which is 32 Megapixels -
Vista will mean ca 7400x4900 pixels which is 36 Megapixels

ooooh some of the anamorphic lenses are going to love this.

Now all the comments about stills and "IF" you use s35 glass and old mounts makes sense. Thank you Jarred and Jim!! Thank you so much!

Jarred confirmed on FB...the name "Weapon" is derived from the Vista Vision...the two "V"s make a W! Jay Kim figured it out!!

Phil you have to update the info/data sheet! VISTA VISION baby!!!

I did. Exactly one hour ago:

You guys are so slow :)

Seriously though. VistaVision is my favorite format. Dragon holds so much "film relevance" in it's resolving power to format size relationship. I had a feeling RED would get there in 2008 and this explains much of the reason I'm very happy right now.

FYI, this doesn't make S35 any less relevant. These are two important formats. In my personal POV, the real important formats have been S16, S35, VistaVision, 65mm 5-perf, and 70mm IMAX 15-perf.

I came from a feature film/VFX background and had access to the Fries Vista Vision cam + glass. Changed my life really.

Just a note, for the film guys out there, this is going to open up a lot of new opportunities.

Hey Phil.... I once worked on a few ShowScan 65mm films back in the day.

There was an exciting moment in motion picture history :)

Right now what the broadcast standards are moving towards is 24-60fps. Curious to see where 60fps is going to be popping up. I've already seen some UHD 4K NBA at 60fps and it rocks hard.

Yes indeed.... AND, this is an exciting moment in motion picture history! Meaning WEAPON!

:)

Awesome, Martin! Doug is a good friend. He is still going at it with Showscan Digital better known as "Magi". I'm sure he will love to hear of Red going Vista Vision! :)

Man, I'm more excited then the day before the Scarlet-MX reveal!

Naw, not happening. RED have no history of offering that kind of different spec. Look at Epic/Scarlet; different frame rates but same sensor. Ditto Epic-X vs. Epic-M. Carbon is cool, a bit of a gimmick maybe, an extra price for a lightweight body - but *not* a different product line with a different spec. They wouldn't short-change your bread & butter everyday Dragon customer that way. Lots of us have no need or want for Carbon, but will absolutely take the bigger sensor.

They DID say there is more than one Weapon(??); I'm potentially expecting Weapon S35, and Weapon VV; two different cameras. With Carbon variants of both. That wouldn't surprise me at all.

Big question; will there be an upgrade path from Epic Dragon to Weapon VV? It isn't really an obvious upgrade; it's more a completely new line, a new deal.

Yes. That's pretty much what this thread is about :)
