  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Stage 3, 3.5 and beyond...

I want my Side Handle. :( Ive had my Scarlet plugged into the wall since December 11th. :-\

ignore the haters, please the masses.

And please continue to keep us in the loop of your insight(even if its not 100% accurate) to the future, it helps immensely.

Hey Jim, some people are just selfish. No one in the industry offers such an upgrade path and those people should be thankful. But the factory lines shouldn't have to slow down because some of those people take their sweet ass time to respond in a timely manner. You guys are doing your best and a business has to cater to both new and old customers, but neither should slow down business and service.

I agree. I love an update and insights as to new build features.

Thank you !!!

Makes total sense. And I appreciate the upgrade.

Only problem for me right now is that I did not realize that I would NOT have a battery powered option (side handle or quad battery module-plus third party lemo back orders). This is a problem for some shooting scenarios and is currently losing me money. I would have waited for my upgrade had I known this.

Information is everything. Red doesn't always put the weight they should behind disclosing current delivery times of products. (i.e "Backorder update - REDMOTE - Out of backorder Feb. 3rd.").

Battery Quickplate --> 2B to 1B --> RED Brick = power

Would have waited to trade in if I'd known is MY point.

I have heard this before and for the life of me can't understand why you wouldn't rent a V-Mount for a shoot or two and more than makeup whatever moneys you would be or are losing now.

My point is that I'd rather have continued using a system that works for me (the Redone) until I could have a fully functioning Epic. That choice should be mine. I personally don't have the time to source and subrent gear to make the Epic work. I am busy being a DP. I would have rather waited until I could have the package that I thought I was getting.

Once again - I am not trying to appear ingrateful towards the upgrade program - but I would appreciate more information along the way. I personally would not have taken my Epic if I knew what I would NOT be getting a complete package. I had jobs lined up and have been unable to respond to the incomplete package I received.

Ok Dylan I respectfully disagree with you and will leave the conversation because we just don't see eye to eye on this.

You guys and your "cameras." I'm just waiting for REDCine-X Pro 11. XD Also, I hope you guys are going to consider making it attractive for academic institutions to put a few of those trade in cameras in their rental closets... what are you guys doing with all those anyway? Building Giant RED Robots with spare parts? .... Maybe there was a thread on this and I missed it.

Hey RED ONE trade-in customers: Buy a 2B-1B cable to get your RED EPIC working!!!!

I think the comment on the 2B - 1B cable is the right one in this situation.
We got our EPIC-X first with no side handle, obvisouly no battery module but RED VOLTs.
We kept trying it bound to the wall :( - then I was repeatably asking "When can we expect the side handle - at least?".
It turned out this way:

1st they pointed me to the fact that we do already have the 2B-1B cable (and the XLR power cable too), which I ordered on recommendation of a friend from a rental house, without actually knowing what they were good for.
Second, after digging my emails from the SPAM folder I found an old email pointing out that my side handle is ready to ship. It was just amazing that RED themselves could not bring this information together - there are surely some things that can be improved on CRM, but they are working on it and it gets better all the time - thank you guys!

So we got our side handle now and its a completely new experience. Unfortunately the batteries don't really last long, so considering the good old RED Bricks as power source makes just sense.

That brings me back to the 2B-1B cable:
Its the adapter cable you need when you want your RED Bricks Battery Plate being connected to the EPIC. It iwas stated in our stage 2 email, but we probably missed to read it carefully enough.
All those who just can trade in their RED ONEs in stage 3.x programs will surely have left over their RED ONE battery packs etc (I am not aware RED is interested in getting those back, are they?).
So all you need on top is that little cable and you are back to work with your EPIC, at least.

Clearly I understand that the Side Handle is the right thing to have, because it enables you to replace the 5" screen with the EVF to operate the camera (as you can connect both at the same time).

However the problem is not just alone REDs, its mine and theirs - or in your case: yours and theres, together.

What would be helpful, and which I requested a bunch of times, would be some kind of guide which shows the users how ALL the parts of the RED ONE/EPIC/SCARLET ecosystem really fit together and which specifc configs require which parts (I'd dream of a virtual "designer" to put pieces virtually together). I was at IBC and was quite disappointed not being able to see all parts, play with them "hands on" to understand what I need to order. I took recommendation from the rental house, looked at the EPIC M package (which I 100% resembled in my order) plus some extra parts that we thought were the right ones.

Such simple information like this would help a LOT:

Hey all RED ONE trade-in customers:

Go and buy a 2B-1B cable to get your RED Bricks / Battery Plate connected to the EPIC. Make sure you have the Rods solution up and ready for the EPIC to mount the battery plate.

THAT makes your EPIC usable.

Or the battery belt clip.

Btw, the RED ONE RED Bricks are the better bang for the buck in terms of power lifetime. One RED Brick has 140Wh (450 US$) while the RED VOLTs only have 37Wh (195 US$), so you get nearly 4 times the camera lifetime for just over double the price. And charging is easier, and you can even use third party V-Mount batteries as usual...

You need RED VOLTs for the Side Handle anyway, and they are great for this.

Having both RED Brick/Plate and RED VOLT/Side Handle connected at the same time could provde battery backup if the big battery is unloaded by priority and the Side Handle battery takes over when the Brick is empty. So you would have chance to swap uninterupted to the next RED Brick without needing to power down. According to RED that should work.

I do think it requires a whole thread.

Btw, I am on stage 2 and obviously have not originally intended to use the RED Bricks on the EPIC. After a few days of testing I do believe they are probably the better option.

Regards,
Axel

Anyone at RED?
Have not yet tried this...

Hi Axel,

Yes that works fine. When powered by Red Brick it shows as DC voltage and you can hot remove the Brick and it just switches to the RedVolt in the sidehandle. I have an ET battery plate that clamps to a 19mm rod - but better, it also clamps to a tripod leg and that's how I use it all the time - makes less clutter on the camera. Personally, I don't think I'm going to need the Quad battery unit as I much prefer using the Red Bricks.
