  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED WEAPON - Info and Data Sheets

...Or you could unscrew the whole I/O and go bare bone drone.

That would be great - but how do you monitor wirelessly your imagery? There does not seem to be any industry-standard port that could feed a wireless video transmitter.
We would need something like this...:

or this...:

Hopefully those are coming...

Nice mock-up. I actually hope that it has wireless transmission built-in. All we need is a receiver. Then again, you're right that there might not be a standard that would work across the board. Hopefully they figure out something...

For aerials we use the PARALINX Tomahawk - which has a range exceeding the range of the RC controls (well over 1.5 km) with the long-range MIMO antenna. This is $8K tech that very few have need for and as such would not be economic for RED to "build-in". I do hope that the Weapon will have a shorter range wireless monitoring option - let's say in the 100m (300') range. That could be done at a reasonable cost and would benefit almost enyone using these cameras. But for mid and long range monitoring we really need dedicated 3-rd party HW like the PARALINX. And for that we need an industry standard port like HD-SDI or HDMI...

Given that they are making the "LEMO" adaptor, making an HD-SDI and/or HDMI one should not be difficult...

There is also FCC/Regulatory limitations and restrictions depending on what country you are in that gets pretty boggled if you try to make something "built-in" to go everywhere.

Right now the majority of " high end" and "low end" wireless video options ( nyrus, bolt, paralinx, etc. ) are mostly repackaged off of the amimon chips which have their strengths and weaknesses. They have pretty much been alone in that segment for a few years now, but with the popularity of the drone market and their real need for wireless video we know there are some new options coming soon... all in the same little large USB/HDMI stick form factor. And of course Aminmon hasnt been sitting still they have some new stuff coming as well.

You will have some great options soon from multiple parties that have different solutions depending on the type of environment you are in, most all of which won't be compatible with each other. Some of the Weapon rear modules have HDMI and USB power for that specific reason.. so you can use different Wireless Video options depending on if you are inside a stage, flying in the air or mounted to a car.

Nice to hear. Thanks, as always.

Yep. That totally makes sense. Thanks Jarred. Wireless is the way of the future and I look forward what Red and others bring in the next 10 years :-). We're already ahead of the game from most folks. Now if we can get governments to agree on things...

I did see a chinese military transmitter and receiver recently in action that was pretty impressive.. It was designed to work through concrete bunkers. It was pretty incredible.. best I have seen x 1000 but I am sure would give the FCC a heart attack and it had a mid 6 figure price tag.

There's some powerful wireless video transmission gear from china at the consumer level too. Aimed at the FPV / RC crowd. Dramatically questionable in terms of power output and legality... A few years ago when I had more time for hobby stuff I had a line of sight video transmission setup working over ten miles on 2.4ghz. Transmitter PCB was the size of half a matchbox. Still got that gear somewhere, but I'm feeling more responsible these days ;)

Jarred any chance you can share some insight on a side handle option for the Weapon before NAB or do we just need to wait :-). I know a lot of us are wondering.

Jarred, as you know yourself, with RC aerials every gram counts and can make a huge difference. I feel that using rear module is adding unnecessary weight not only due to the form factor, but also since they provide many other ports that will not be used during aerial work.
This kind of diminishes the advances you guys have made by shrinking the body even further and with the more generous use of carbon fibre.
Any chance you will make the simple monitoring adaptors similar to my mock-ups on the previous page?
Or - better yet - would you consider releasing the pin-out / protocols to selected 3rd party manufacturers who could then make custom super-compact monitoring options for wireless?
If you would collaborate with Paralinx/Teradek - they could even make a dedicated transmitters to fit directly on top of the brain without the need for any adaptors and cables.
Now that would be truly something that would make us (RED users in need of lightweight wireless monitoring options) really happy and would not clog your R&D resources...

My only question is when does the Epic-M to Weapon upgrade path go live on the RED.com Store? NAB opens on Saturday however the Exhibits open on Monday at 10:00AM. My bet would be Monday at 10:00 AM PST. Is there any insight on when this is going down?

Very likely between Midnight Sunday or AM Monday. That is if you are referring to Dragon Epic-M to Weapon upgrades. There's no Mysterium-X to Weapon upgrade path.

So do we need to add money to our Red account in order to to pay for whatever the weapon reservation is, or is credit card just as quick?

Nope. Likely all the info you are looking for is Sunday around Midnight and then the following Monday morning.
