Was wondering what the expected retail cost of the Al Canon mount will be on its own when it becomes available in late march/early April. Doing the math from the RED store I am getting a $500 balance when adding the brain and Side SSD, is there really going to be a $1500 difference between the Ti mount and Al mount? I am about to purchase one from a fellow REDUSER as a means to get it in advance and am trying to weigh out the decision.

Titanium is better and more robust for temperature changes (less metal movement when temperature changes)

Apparently the AL mount it is mostly machined parts. Maybe a few cast components, and the plan is still $500 as stated on the old thread below... Confirmed directly by Red a few days ago.
I am also buying the AL mount from a colleague in the next week or so.

I agree with your post but I do not agree with the 2K price.

Im not complaining about the price at all, the purpose of this post was to confirm the price as I am about to pay close to double (900) to get the AL mount here for a job.

Jason, do you know the AL mount will be available March 30 at the Red Store for $500? If you can wait you can save 400 bucks.

PL Ti mount makes sense.. lenses cost $3K cheap to $65K Angie Zoom each... most Primes are around $10K to $20K.

$500 AL mount makes sense for lenses that cost $100 to $5000 imho

ti Canon Mount makes no sense to me unless you shoot in extreme climates or rock HUGE lenses all the time

I did see the backorder update, we have decided to hold out and wait. It is one of those tricky situations, have a few gigs booked that could certainly shoot on canon mount glass so it was the questions of what we would save on lens rentals etc. Luckily I have a number of friends here in town with either EPICS or SCARLETS that are willing to help us out on our shoot days with their canon mounts.

I do appreciate the heads up though, we all certainly need to save as much money as we can (so we can spend it on additional RED aks)

Yeah, I agree with Tim.

If you need the advantages of Ti mounts, you really NEED them, so its absolutely worth it.

That said the mount on the Canon cameras are Al, and there is no problem with them for 99.9999% of users.

The few Canon DSLR users that are affected by the limitations of Al mount have the simple option of buying another body and keeping them in the various temperatures they are going to work in. I mean, an extra 7D body is about the price difference between a Ti and PL mount ... but you get a back up body too. Not an option for most Red users ... or even C300 users.

So ... for 99.9999% of users I recommend the Al mount.

When I pull the trigger, I'll get a Ti Canon mount AND a Al mount for my B camera.

Now, I'm going to go and slothfully not buy anything some more.

I chose Ti EOS. I may not be shooting the longest lenses all of the time, but I am planning to be frequently shooting ultra light; sans rails possibly with and without a clamp on compact mattebox. The extra strength adds to my comfort level for all types of load outs.

Also, if it goes out for rental...

Throw the 70-200mm 2.8 Canon lens on the Ti mount no problem. With the aluminum Canon mount you better make sure you have some good support. 70-200 is rock solid on my EpicX with Ti Canon mount.

Frazier, That is what I want to hear! My Ti Canon mount comes in tomorrow and they are expensive but I figured that way, I can mount my 70-200 and 100-400 without having to worry about supporting them. Also, I expect to change lenses a lot. The Ti should be able to take thousands more change-outs than the Al mount.

The weak link in the Canon mount is the lens, I woukd support any lenses beyond the 70-200 regardless of Ti or Al mount. The primary reason to use Titanium is resistance to thermal expansion, primarily if you're shooting in conditionn where the temperature is going to change considerably.

Call me stupid, but the 100-400L IS lens (with no support!) was holding rock solid on my Canon Al mount. It is built like f'n Terminator! I wouldn't make a habit of shooting like this but it gave me zero trouble, and it did not worry me one bit because of how secure and stress free the mount felt and looked. Crazyness

If any of this is true about the price then Im in. I have used canon for years and I can't see any typical short lens that would not be just as well off using the AL. That said if your thinking of 400mm and 800mm lenses you better have support with the AL...if nothing more not to tear the mounts off the back of the lens...
