  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED WEAPON - Info and Data Sheets

Nope. Likely all the info you are looking for is Sunday around Midnight and then the following Monday morning.

Sure hope it's Sunday night and not Monday morning. I'd rather not have to make a decision to stay in my hotel vs. getting to the show floor!

Thanks Phil. The 2nd LCD/EVF connection is welcome. I don't like losing the HDMI to the +1. I'm wondering if news about Redmags trade-in for Minimags will come this week.

A comprehensive comparison between the current Dragon and proposed Weapon models would be greatly appreciated since our decision time is a compressed 2 days. For me Frame Rates v Compression Rates are top question marks. Looking at what has been published, it seems Weapon has the same, or very similar, internals as the current Dragon so the differences are external. Also would like to know the upgrade path of the Dragon Monochrome. Not seeing anything on that. If there is no timebounded upgrade path for the Mono Dragon I would like to know by the end of NAB so I can make a buying decision for both my Dragons.
Thank you for your efforts on our behalf!

Phil any word on Weapon compression? Do new boards and faster media make an improvement here? Would be great to know!

Best

Still working on the exact compression advantages in terms of ratios since its not a direct comparison but in terms of raw write speed as mentioned the data write speeds are up to 50% faster.

Epic/Scarlet is 200MB/s , Weapon MG is 225MB/s, Weapon Carbon is 300MB/s.

Just a little question, will we see some improvements in term of color science? Thanks all!

Color Science is ever evolving. I wouldn't doubt improvements on the horizon.

Jim mentioned 15 bit processing as well, which is interesting.

Side by Side Compression Ratio / Frame Rate is a question that's on a lot of minds this week and will help steer my personal buying decision. Any info you can share is appreciated. Seems like write data rates increasing would eliminate one bottleneck to reducing compression. Also seems like if the CF is "8K Ready" then the processor horse power is in place to dramatically improve current compression at 6K HD. But then I'm no Rocket Surgeon

Just take a wildass guess . . . not like anyone is going to hold you to it via repost ;-)

Thanks Phill
Extremely clear.

I've got more info here than my whole day at NAB

Thanks again.

Any word on whether the Weapon will be competent to power lenses that cameras other than EPIC can power? Such as Fujinon Cabrio?

Likewise, any word on whether Weapon will be able to read lens metadata that EPIC cannot?

Weight savings?

Weight savings?

Im a skydiving arial cinematographer currently jumping the Dragon on my helmet .There are a few of us out there who would be very keen to know the weight savings on the weapon.

1) Whats the weight of the CF Weapon

2) Whats the weight of the MG Weapon

Brain only will work. But if anyone wants to build one into a basic skydive configuration and let me know then I'd be stoked :-
Brain, sidekick , base expander, XL module, XL battery, lens mount.

3) Im almost ready to pay the deposit but I'd need to know I can fly this thing and keep battery's attached whilst plummeting to earth at 150MPH- The ET side handle would be what I need I guess so if anyone is prepared to give me rough specs on its weight I'd also be very grateful.

4)I was about to buy a mini SSD module for my Dragon. If I upgrade will I get anything for the module as trade in . If not I'll stay with my 1.8" until my weapon ships if I pull the trigger ;-)

My wildass guess:

Current Dragon 6K at 24fps 8:1 runs around 88mb/s according to the REDTools app.

That example and others all seem to point to a base data rate of 29.33mb/frame for 6K prior to compression.

Epic is 200mb/s but none of the settings in the app read above 180mb/s, so let's allow 10% headroom.

So... 225 yields 202.5mb/s, 300 yields 270mb/s

Working that back for 6kFF 24fps (704mb/s)

Epic/Scarlet: 704/180 = ~ 3.9:1 (4:1)
Weapon MG: 704/202.5 = ~ 3.5:1 (4:1)
Weapon CF: 704/270 = ~ 2.6:1 (3:1)

or for 6K FF 72fps (2112mb/s)

Epic/Scarlet: 2112/180 = ~ 11.7:1 (12:1)
Weapon MG: 2112/202.5 = ~ 10.4:1 (11:1)
Weapon CF: 2112/270 = ~ 7.8:1 (8:1)

All totally made up... but better than nothing ;)

(And as an afterthought to the back-of-an-envelope maths - that suggest compression for 8K would give RC 5:1 max at 24fps and around 12:1 at 60fps)

As I understand it at this point the only way to power the W would be Redvolt XL's.......When there are AB or V-mt options will there also be a hot swap solution, i.e. the new side handle?

Note:Sorry if this has been answered earlier........
