  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

You are all Invited....

Okay, way different then what I tough you guys were after, even so surely entertaining, and beautifully filmed, I see nothing of with I had in mind, as far as visually embracing 4K, with extremely Sharp, and detailed visible to wow, such Eyes, shiny cars, food, liquid and so on, I guess I'm back at square one??

One thing is that this shows lots of slow Mo, so means that we can trow some 96fps, can we not?... ;)

I think the team at RED is leaving it up to us to decide how we want to produce the 4K portrait. We have all the creative license in the world, or at least I think we do. :-)

That's the idea! The best shots are the WS that show high frequencies and lots of detail. Simple. Beautiful. Really fun piece for just a couple minutes.

Look, everyone is going to have a different take on this. So don't see an idea and say "that's not what I had in mind..." -That's the point! We want to see portraits that you think will speak to people...because if they speak to you, they probably will speak to others.
I just want to give examples of what a portrait COULD be, not what is SHOULD be. Take a risk, have fun, use the resources you have, test, test, test, and you'll do great!
Thanks, Jason, for the video!

But the video needs to be in portrait mode, meaning taller than wider yes?

Also on the official site I saw one section that said submissions might be asked "to provide Adobe Premiere Pro project." But I don't see anywhere else ont eh site that the submissions need to be cut in Premiere. I could just be missing it but can that be clarified?

Thanks!

Really? 'Cause... when I think "portrait" I think Avedon, Emmet Gowin, Lee Friedlander, Nan Goldin... not X Games promo piece. I feel like a portrait should be evocative, emotionally charged and communicative of some particular aspect of the human spirit. I mean... that video is cool and parts of it are really beautiful, but beautiful imagery alone is not content... imagery should serve to punctuate a meaningful message. Without a message, even the most clever idea becomes stale all too rapidly, as the video above does. If the criteria for the competition is Cool Fluff, then I guess I need to reconsider entering.

totally agree. and i am afraid that exhibitions with the ceo as curator might be a bit biased. if i were red, i would hire some independent creatives as jurors.

Jason-

"Portrait" is a term that we are using as a description of the film, not the aspect ratio;-) No one should assume that portrait orientation is a requirement of a project. It is up to you to decide how to present the film, to which "portrait orientation" (or 2160x4096) is an option that will also be accepted. This competition is meant to offer the unique opportunity for filmmakers to take advantage of RED 4K cameras and to be as creative as possible in order to have their work become the "4K main event."

Adobe Premiere Pro represents one of the only NLE systems that can take R3Ds from any of the RED cameras and natively edit and export them while maintaining 4K RAW R3D files as a benefit. Because of this, Adobe has come on board as a sponsor of the competition and is required to be used as the offline NLE which, ultimately, should make the task of delivering a 4K project more streamlined while maintaining the highest fidelity. This is why we will need the Premiere Pro project file as well.

For me, the biggest benefit of this competition which will be highly publicized throughout the participants as we approach NAB will be the fact that people finally have the opportunity and motivation to shoot 4K, work in 4K, master in 4K and exhibit in 4K. For most of us, RED has been a 4K capture, 2K or HD exhibition tool. That is all about to change in the world and the NAB 4K Portrait Competition allows anyone who has shot RED in 4K+ the opportunity to finally see their work displayed in 4K, which (for most) has been a rare commodity...until now...

Keep the questions coming and please keep us informed as to your progress or even any hangups. We're happy to address them and we're excited to see the beginning of what we hope to be an annual event for Redusers everywhere.
best,
m

New Gear for NAB 2012?
Canon has started to tease with Cinema EOS again. Are we going to see new products announced prior to the show? We’ve heard the 4K Cinema EOS DSLR would be announced “sooner than later”. Others have said it could be the Ron Howard project (thanks unfocused) being shown. We’ll be at NAB to find out.
The event will take place on Sunday, April 15, 2012 at 5PM

Not sure if this is on all the travel sites, but I just booked a strip view room at the Tropicana the night of the party for $81 on hotels.com. They also have deluxe rooms for $64 and club suites for $125. Seems to be part of a 50% off 2 day promotion on hotels.com. Other hotels were discounted as well. Also looks like the rate is good for the week.
