  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB 2011 update...

The Dragon sensor upgrade is pretty significant.

As far as I know, its unprecedented in the industry. Especially when dealing with such professional level equipment.

We just need some kind of confirmation from someone close to NAB if it really is the "Big Surprise".

I was under the impression that the Dragon sensor upgrade was the big surprise. At least that's how it came across just at the end of that livestream session with Ted.

oh don't get me wrong, that's very big! i just wasn't sure if there was supposed to be an actual time that it was announced, plus the word was that there was going to be several.

So far we have two awesome ones, the lenses and the monstro upgrade. those are both pretty sick!

RED got everybody pumped up for a big NAB-surprise to be released on the first day, and now, half day in, nobody knows what it was?

yeah i'm right there with you. Sure Dragon sounds awesome. The 4k projector is going to be great. This Leica deal is not too shabby either (pending what lenses and price) but I thought the surprises were going to be more...tangible. I feel we would have known what the surprise was when we heard the info. It was seemingly going to be that big.

Agreed. I'll most likely not be able to afford either! lol!

What would be cool would be playing with the iPad app. Get a sense of the look and feel of the RED interface.

I agree the Dragon sounds awesome for Epic users, and I'm happy to see RED is thinking ahead. But I must say I was hoping for some more current like a move to the next phase, and a strong indication production is get sorted. I can't get excited about waiting for something even father into the future like Dragon. If people were expecting stage two to kick in, then today was a set back with epic-M inquiries. Where it leaves us bottom scrapers of scarlet and epic s. I had really hoped for something concrete to plan around.

However I don't want to sound too negative, seeing the scarlet stuff with Joseph these past few days was great, even if it was ted's camera and not a production model. The fact that they are taking the time to boost Scarlet profile can only been seen as positive.

There have been some great announcements... the 4k laser projector, the dragon monstro upgrade, the iPad app, the bandpro/leica package, but those all seem equally impressive. Nothing feels like "the one" you know? I was sort of expecting a sort of drumroll build-up. A time set to announce, an event in the theater or something.

I have to agree. Jim seemed pretty excited for the last few months, so I guess I was expecting the revealing of some new hardware that is available NOW. Maybe a module that does wireless video, or the Redmote Pro, or electronic lenses. Something along the lines of Jarred's announcement that the RED Mattebox is shipping immediately.

Except when RED did the MX sensor upgrade from the M. They've done it before, we just all assumed Monstro would mean new brains, but RED is careful not to double dip when possible- which is awesome. It may be something other companies won't do, but RED's done it before.

It seems clear that Dagron is a down the road thing that we'll be able to do as our finances permit, similar to MX. This is great.

Let's not forget how monstrous Monstro is here. The current MX chip in an Epic body has 12 native stops, 18 with HDRx, better noise floor and characteristics, and we've now been told that the ability to upgrade to something better is definitive. Reread that last sentence. And we get to one up it. Again.

Reread all of that. I know we're all used to RED blowing us away and then having to wait years (literally) for it, but other than it not being in our hands, what's to complain about? Even after waiting those years there is very little that we can seriously compare, and it all costs twice or more as much and isn't absolutely better. Also, I feel like I recall Jim saying at one point that Epic-M/X being able to be upgraded wasn't a definitive possibility. Now it is.

As far as I'm concerned, if being able to upgrade to Dragon is the big surprise, I'm blown away.

Regardless, it's great seeing all the talk and excitement. I regret that I had to back out of going to NAB at the last minute.

Cheers!

Every single time Jim has said, "pay attention" it's been well-worth noting.

These are all great developments, and we should be thankful.

Exactly.

RED desperately needs a new sensor to finally get much better low light capability and to fight with the competition in this way too.

Now I can bet that my former RED MX with Leica M Noctilux 50mm f/0.95 @ wide open is still more sensitive in low light than Epic-M with Leica Summilux C 50mm T1.4.

But unfortunately Epic can't get Leica M lenses (although R1 can) and Jim finally decided to make a sort of strategic partnership with Band Pro and bundle Epic M with the new Leicas...

A very smart move Jim...I'm expecting more in that way and the next should be about HDRx-2 that can deal with a clean high/low ISO based exposure fusion...maybe possible with new RED Dragon sensor upgrade...

What competition would that be Sanjin? Haven't seen anything that is significantly more sensitive than what I'm seeing from Epic samples now, and nothing to touch it for dynamic range.

Maybe the surprise it´s a full warehouse with Epics with all accesories to everybody......with two weeks estimated ship ;).....yes, dream it´s free.

Except when RED did the MX sensor upgrade from the M.

Of course. I meant externally from RED.

I have a feeling though that the S35 to Dragon (whatever spec it may be) upgrade will be more significant though. An upgrade that will make the industry say "ok, whoah.. that totally should have been a whole new camera".

RED is all about changing the norm, right? =)

But yes... at the end of the day, I'm in the same position as you. Would be cool to see something here and now that's just as groundbreaking.

@ Steve... do you know anyone at NAB that can confirm if the RED booth has Kenny G playing? lol

Does anyone know if they are taking orders for Epic X at NAB?

So you think the 'big surprise' ISNT the 4k Projector or Red Dragon?

4K projector was announced two years ago. Now - they are "working on it".
Is it surprice?

Two years ago was announced "professional pocket camera" = 2/3'' Scarlet, which is still not finished and available.

For me the surprice is that NAB 2011 is without RED big surprices. Hopefully they became more realistic :)
