  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB 2011 update...

No Epic-X no Scarlet...........
Another year gone.............

I love how we've been able to self-regulate our comments and expectations (mostly) without moderator assistance or Jim regretting his decision to share things with us. Good job, everyone.

The problem with the thought that the projector or dragon are the surprise is that Jim said "the surprise is certainly worth the trip"...how on earth would hearing that a sensor upgrade to Epic with no specs announced or footage shown and a release date in 2012 or the acknowledgment that work has commenced on the 4K projector in any way/shape/form be worth a trip to Vegas? They didn't even announce it with any fan fare, but Ted walking around talking to people in the booth (at least that is what it seemed like watching the Redmodz stream). I have too assume that the big surprise hasn't been shown yet OR it fell through. Everything we've seen in tangible form has been shown to varying degrees already and the announcements are very detail lean...

I guess I didn't make it clear enough, but that was what I was getting at. I think Red has something else in store (unless they just plain had to scrap it for some reason) as neither the projector or dragon (or Band Pro/Leica) announcements seem worthy of Jim telling the frothing massess of Reduser that it would be worth the trip.

I find the Dragon pretty incredibly exciting, it´s just that right now I only feel an urge for RED to deliver what they already have had on their agenda for 2 + years... not even more stuff far into the future. (If I sound pessimistic, I am not, I am very optimistic, that´s why I am starting to grow fairly impatient - I want the good stuff now!)

Still waiting for Bomb EVF, SSD module for R1, SSD cards, and not to mention our very very highly anticipated Epic-X

I could understand not announcing release dates or prices because of ongoing source/supply problems. But I don't understand withholding Scarlet features and specs. Sure, they could change slightly, but I would've thought they'd be pretty much locked down by now.

I have a feeling though that the S35 to Dragon (whatever spec it may be) upgrade will be more significant though.

Does anyone know if the Dragon Epic path will let us upgrade to a 'new' s35 Monstro chip (more latitude...) or to the Full Frame Monstro fitted inside the same tiny Epic-M/X brain ?

I completely agree with you. I would love to go play with the Scarlet and Epic, but to make a trip to Las Vegas (with flight, hotel, and food costs) just to be told of prospective technology ( Dragon and 4k projector) I would feel let down by RED. This is awesome news; I'm sure the Dragon sensors are going to blow the world away. But worth the trip, when I got the info from a livestream this morning? No, not worth it.

I see why people are wondering what the big surprise is, given that the dragon/projector announcements came out in a relatively casual manner. That said, I think it's pretty f'ing awesome that this company, which is now making what could arguably be the greatest camera ever, has just topped that achievement by confirming that they'll perform a hardware/sensor upgrade for Epic owners similar to the MX program. Sure, they did it before, but it was said many times before that the upgrade paths from epic-x to monstro would be buying a new brain. The whole DSMC concept has been a breath of fresh air, and now they're throwing even more love our way.

On a side note, I just held an Epic-M for the first time over the weekend, and it's hard to express how excited I am to be a future Epic owner. They've come so far in just a few years... Would I love my Epic now? Yes. Can I wait a little longer for it? Without a doubt. It'll be well worth the wait.

To be honest, I'm getting tired with all this new announcement every year and not be able to plan my near future with RED. What shall I do with the newest announcement to buy or at least to be interested in buying an EPIC M without knowing if the EPIC X is just around the corner or not? Perhaps someone at RED could explain me how it comes, that they have enough electronic parts to built this much EPIC Ms but not X? If the EPIC X was announced for a price much to low, ok, I can understand that and would be willing to pay the 58'000 $. For such a terrific camera still a great price but NOT, when (nobody knows) first better priced EPIC X will be delivered in the next days, that's at least what Jim has announced some days ago. Sometimes it's even for a REDtrained customer not easy to be patient dear RED team.

The dragon and the 4K projector are I guess surprises,
The dragon maybe "less" a surprise cause the surprises always feel like Jannard takes a stage and suddenly it's like "BOOM!" and it feels like your wallet needs to be taken out (obviously until you hear the date isn't for another year...)
The dragon probably is one of the surprises, Jannard did say there were a few so Lecia, 4K Projector and Dragon so far...

It all doesn't feel so significant because there's no solid thing like "Q1 2012" etc. and there is no pricing or specs to any of it, so nothing that you can really think "ITS HERE!" (until you hear the date of course)

I think the big news is RED and APPLE partner to use REDRay/REDCode as the new, highly efficient way for INDIE filmakers to make their 4K content available, via iTunes download, for sale to the public.
