I apologize in advance if this offends a lot of people.

But does it not bug anybody else the number of useless one line fanboy posts that show up in this forum.

I know Jim is our God and by all means deservingly so. But doesn't everybody think that he knows by now that he's the master of our universe.

Is it really neccesary that everytime there is a new announcment that we have to wade through thirty pages of "awesome", sprinkled with "Jim, you're the man", topped with other useless expressions or proclamations of what you are going to buy- in order to find the ten or so relevant posts.

I by all means agree with meaningful discussion no matter how meandering and off topic they might go. But lots of this is just pissing in the snow/ graffiti which really hinders the effectiveness of the forum.

Sorry for being a stick in the mud......

well ill understand in a post with new pictures.. or a film's thread to have posts of appreciation

showing appreciation, while it may be annoying to some is simply that... showing appreciation.

The time I see it as a problem, is when a particular user only ever adds that type of content to the forum... i guess to pad their post count or something.

I'd rather see one line appreciative posts than flames, trolls, constant whining, etc :) That's where the real pissing in the pool comes in.

There are a lot of people who are excited about what RED is doing. It's a minor hindrance at best. It is feedback that helps RED to know what folks think about it.

I'd much rather read that kind of stuff, than one line insults, jabs, etc...

when one needs to worry about being descriptive is when providing feedback on someone's work, or when posting a piece of feedback or an opinion. Especially if that piece of feedback may not be popular. That is when taking the time to be thorough, and thoughtful is warranted.

Just think of it as applause, and kudos :)

My 2 cents.

later,
Jason

I agree with Jason.. And for the record, Jim is NOT a god.. Far from it, he's a driven extremely obessive person who is passionate about what he does.

When he rolled out the primes at the REDUser party, I must have heard him ask "So what do you think?" over 100 times that night. He wanted... No.. He NEEDED to know people liked them. Then after the party, when he came back and noticed not a lot of posts on the quality of the lenses, he was not happy. He really HOPED people would be excited. They were, but everyone was so damn gorked from the party, or flying home, there was not a lot of posting right away.

The guys at RED have a thicker skin than when they started, but mean spirited bitching still hurts, and compliments still help.

Yes there are "fanboys" on here, and this is where they should be. It's RED's forum after all.

You guys remind me of the fellow who once said "I hate this place, every time New York hits the field, these mindless morons go crazy and they've not even done anything!"
Then the fellow next to him says "What do you expect? You're in YANKEE stadium"

I say, if you like it, let them know, it you hate it, then go to c.com where you will have LOTS of friends.

:)

Ooga, if you've been on the forums as long as any of us, you'll know how to skim through the 'mindless dribble' and read the posts that matter. But it excites a lot of us too when others are excited. We are a family after all and we have the same interests.

Having the time to wade through 5-10 pages of a thread that is only a few hours old is an issue for many working pros.

I think I see your point, it's a lot to wade through at times. For Jim's posts, I pretty much only read post #1 and ignore the rest of the thread because I don't have time to sort through 10+ pages of exactly what you describe. I'm probably missing some important things at times, oh well.

The threads I hit the most on here are for specific workflow and problem solving and they are usually free of that kind of stuff. I don't thing the fan boy posts are something you can regulate.

What can be regulated, or what was supposed to be regulated, is the Real Name protocol on here. Why is that not fully implemented and seemingly voluntary? "Oogabooga" I'm looking in your direction....

My Technique to dealing with this forum unfortunately only works if you dip in often..

1st check new posts (skim as fast as you can)
2nd check any threads you have contributed too (by using the find all posts short cut)
3rd check the 6 or 7 people with the highest and best signal to noise on this list..

This needs between 10-30min..

There is no way I can dip into all sections as it steals hours of your life..

Extra must do rule!! never respond to anyone who has too much time... even if they are spouting absolute drivel. They will win!!

If you use a red camera often you have to read this list... if you don't you are at a disadvantage. You could make an argument that this is an additional cost.

I would love 50% of this lists posts to disappear... but I suspect it is the price for the ok 45% and the great 5%.

I would rather read neither. Unfortunately, Red never caught on on other message boards so people HAVE to read this site.

Just last week there was a rickroll post in the lens section. Why?

There are already two useless posts in the Off-Hollywood repair thread. "Great" and "That is spectacular news". Why do people feel the need to post just for the sake of posting. I am sure by the end of the weekend there will be a hundred more.

I don't see where that stuff is necessary at all. It adds nothing to the discussion. But now people are going to have to sort through hundreds of useless posts to get vital information on the Red repair process at Off-Hollywood, you will have no choice if you want to see the answer to GFIRob's question about audio board upgrades.

And why wasn't that in the Crucial Ordnance section? That could have been posted there with a message to only reply if you are asking questions.

Then you would have a whole section with threads of important news, followed by posts that contain either a question or an answer to a question.

I am not interested in starting trouble, it is just so frustrating.

This is where avatars are really useful. Just read the users who are interesting (sorry for others, including me I guess)

As long as the one line comments stay on Recon and not on others threads, I find them legitimate (this is Red home after all). Though a clean up for old Recon threads might be really nice. It's kinda hard to search through the average 300 posts a thread.

The forum has become bloated and too spread out. There are so many sub forums to look through (Over 40 by my last count), skimming has become a past time itself, you simply cannot devote 20 minutes to catch up with any relevant or interesting discussions. When you combine it with the amount of useless posts it only serves to exaggerate the point. I don't know about others but my post count certainly dropped when I just couldn't be bothered to keep up with all the different locations to look. There are some sub-forums I've simply never looked in... Why the hell is there an unboxing forum? The only reason I read this thread was because it was at the top and therefore on the front page and caught my eye, otherwise I don't think I've looked in this sub-forum a great deal.

Keep it simple! Something like this:

  • Announcements (Locked from users posting, just those from Red, Jim, Jarred, Graeme Natress etc)

  • Cameras (For discussing Red One, Scarlet and Epic)
  • Accessories (For discussing Redray, lenses, tripods, Red Rocket etc)
  • Post production (For discussing workflows, hardware, distribution etc)

  • Shot on Red (As is)
  • Services/Equipment (Sales, rental and crew for hire)
  • Cinematography
  • Off Topic
  • Ordinance (For small announcements, bugs, issues and complaints)

Paul,

As RED Grows there will be "sub groups" of people who have specific interests and will not venture into other parts of the forum.

I.E. I do not believe I have ever visited the "Scarlet" section, and Epic only once. When I there are working prototypes, then I will look more.

Also, as RED grows there will be more and more people who know less and less. How this forum deals with the "So, tell me what a matte-box is" crowd is one thing, how the industry deals with them is quite another.
