  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

This Forum - (Awesome, woot, I love you Jim etc &^#%@)

I know......how many times has someone started or suggested having a weekly summary and how many more have people agreed it was a great idea....reduser portal. and yes I suggested a thread with the most annoying comments...film is dead or I geezed myself. And blind adoration is hard to take when your looking to tech info.

ps: and to add insult to injury.....anyone thought of a regular weekly live chat, bit like Justin's TV stream (maybe just text) during Red Nab party to catch up? If Justin did it we could call it JusRedText....ummm
Maybe even two streams one where it's completely public and anyone canpost comments on whats being written as new this week and one where there is a reduced number of gentlemen who would know not to post they just geezed their pants and would post a summary of what's happening with Red/reduser that week.
Or live chat rooms on different topics (which Red practically is) for a couple of hours a weekend.
 
Heck, Im as guilty as the next guy for writing the odd one line response, but I certainly understand why it can be so frustrating. Maybe instead of comments like "wooo, jim you da man" we could implement a kudos button or "like" button from facebook?

Ie: "4,200 people said "wooo, you da man" to this post."

As RED Grows there will be "sub groups" of people who have specific interests and will not venture into other parts of the forum.

I.E. I do not believe I have ever visited the "Scarlet" section, and Epic only once. When I there are working prototypes, then I will look more.

I accept your point. The problem I'm referring too isn't just about being able to catch up and read about things. It's also very much to do with having greater input by a larger knowledge base.

For instance, in the Workflow section the forum for Avid very clearly lets you see information about Avid, but imagine there was just one forum for workflow that covered all aspects of post. People checking out something about final cut may come across an interesting thread about Avid that they may be able to answer. But because that thread is currently hidden away in another forum it isn't seen and the answer doesn't get posted. People don't generally browse these sub forums as they would a larger universal forum and as such the input is lessened.

The other point is that people post in the wrong places because there are too many places to post and might want their post to be seen by more people. Have you ever gone to post a topic and had to wonder "Where should I post it? Which forum will most likely get my answer?".

I genuinely believe that the content being posted before the amount of sub forums expanded significantly was far more interesting and of a higher quality.

Likewise, I would think that having to wade through several pages of insults, combativeness, and negativity would be as well :)

I'll take the over-posting of cheering to constant negativity any day. Negativity has a far worse impact on forums as a whole in my opinion. And, don't confuse not wanting negativity with not wanting folks to disagree, etc. I would take a well-thought, well-phrased concern, complaint, etc over a cheering squad, or a bunch of fighters any day as well.

Posting "I love it" = I approve of the direction taken. Doesn't require further explanation. <applause> <you got my vote>

Alternatively, if one disagrees or dislikes something (at least in the context we are largely discussing here), one would think that person would want to take the time to properly phrase their stance in order to have the intended *positive* outcome... change. Otherwise, (in my opinion) it's just hate, with no other motive.

For those of you who aren't interested in the "personality" of the forum, or don't want to "sift through 5-10 pages..." and just want to go straight to the information, just search the recent posts of those members you deem valuable contributors of information. It works ;)

And, a suggestion for those of you who think there is too much noise and not enough signal... How about starting threads that promote the informative discussion and valuable contribution to the boards that you long for, rather than spending time discussing the posting habits of others :)

I will agree that we need more organization, and it's a work in progress on a very fast paced forum. Jarred's "Crucial Ordinance" section is a step towards that. Anyone who has suggestions on ways organize things to make it easier on those looking for the latest news, product information, etc please feel free to email me at jason at landmine dot tv

This forum, like RED is a work in progress. But, it has a strong foundation, and it is largely intended to be a community driven forum, like the 'user it was born from. Which means, the members (at the end of the day) drive the direction and the content.

I know I am guilty of this...big time....
and I also find it frustrating to ask a question, and have some one say that it was answered 40 times on other threads....some topics are easy to find, others I have torn my hair out they're buried so deep.
I was wondering what the true point of the 'rate this thread' thingy was on the bottom corner.
I'm assuming that it's intent is to draw attention to posts or threads that have, in some way, become valuable to someone for information, news, tips, or humor?
I've never really noticed, but does it ever get used? For what is it used? ......feel like I'm missing something.
If I rate any thread above this one I'm writing right now a 10 ....then what? If everyone did, would that thread then show up as a sticky or high-ranked thread for everyone to find?
