  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC-S (old Scarlet S35) update...

Also is a DSLR lens mount is going to be available in the same time for us who are unlucky enought not to shoot with Pl lens?

vincent*

Yes... Canon mounts are complete and functioning ( just fine tuning the auto focus and adding more and more lenses to the database ) . Nikon mount en route.

Not possible... no matter what we do, someone will want more.

Jim

Yes, but many others will be delighted, and forever have their creative lives changed for the better. I am already among those with our MX.

Any idea when a nobody like me will be able to reserve an EPIC-S? :)

Join the nobody club. 3 years ago we were nobodies as well. Its a great club to be in...

Now to answer your question.. there isn't an answer yet. we will let you know when there is.

I remember when I was younger, thinking, why do film cameras cost so much. How can anyone afford to spend $150,000-250,000 to own a professional camera. 12k is not impossible at all. Sorry to say, but that camera i carried a picture of was an Arriflex. Now I carry a picture of a Red Epic.

haha... you'll be just fine. oh, you were planning on meditating on your epic-x though, right? ;)

if you're going to see... just look.

Epic S and Anamorphic Lenses

Epic S and Anamorphic Lenses

Any insight into the Anamorphic capabilities of the Epic-S?

If so, i'm specifically interested in the dimension of the s35 sensor used for anamorphic filming.... any ideas on that yet?

7. EPIC-Ms are currently being produced in low quantities and will step up just a bit this month (January). Production EPIC-X is scheduled to begin small production end of February with a fairly significant ramp up in March. Major volume begins in April. Many of you will have your EPIC-X by NAB. EPIC-S should begin production in May... depending on EPIC-X orders.
Jim

Great news Jim. Thanks for the update. And Happy new year to all at RED, and REDuser.
Does this mean that Stage 2 holders can hope to have their Epic-X's by the end of May?
Another question.
Are EPIC serial numbers going to be the same as our RED One serial number (like Marks number 6)? Or are serial numbers going to be by epic order number?

Thanks for everything

Music to my ears! And a nice thought to distract me during my 10-day vipassana meditation which starts tomorrow. Now I will never be able to focus... :-0

and you won't be able to talk to anyone about it... :)

meditate on all the awesome 120fps stuff you want to shoot with epic.

Man, this stuff is exciting! its now 1/1/11 bay bee!!
THE FUTURE IS NOW
EPIC-M - shipping Dec 2010
EPIC-X - Feb 2011
EPIC - S - an S35 5K resolution camera that can be packaged for under $20k!
Scarlet - 2/3 Interchangeable - Can you say mini primes! 3D kill-uh
Scarlet Fixed 2/3 - indie rig for under $10K! - Prosumer spanking HDRx™™™ bay bee!

SSD workflow. REDCINE-X/STORM image management.

Posting on the Pablo with (hopefully) 5K full debayered full resolution 4K

I NEED MORE STORAGE EVERYWHERE DOWN THE PRODUCTION LINE TO POST> time to rebudget

Definitely get why REDCODE management with M, X, S is tantamount for 5K to 4K delivery (and survival)

in the words of the inimitable Ed McMahon... HEY OHHHH!

This shit is exciting as hell men.

I NEED MORE STORAGE EVERYWHERE DOWN THE PRODUCTION LINE TO POST> time to rebudget

Jim's secret business model. Sell lots of cheap 4k, then 5k cameras. But first invest in storage companies.

tim, i thought you were sanjin for a second...

seriously though, i'm thinking both 2/3 models will be highly desirable for stereo work... some productions may want both, the fixed because it's electronics and the primes because of their size... it would be nice if we saw some electronic miniPrimes... i guess we'll do it the old fashioned way for now, and it will just be super stylish :)

Hey guys, sorry to jump in with a noob comment but can someone clarify for me.... Epic-S is 5k right ? And the 2/3 scarlets will be 3k?

I come back to the site every couple of months but it seems all the naming has changed and I'm confused!

3. Frame rates and data rates in combination with project sizes will be the primary compromises in comparison with the big brothers (EPIC-X and EPIC-M). You can anticipate about 1/2 the overall data throughput. As soon as the engineers finalize the list... I will post it.
Jim

My prediction for the Epic-S max frame rates:

5K - 60 FPS
4K - 72 FPS
3K - 96 FPS
2K- 120 FPS

how bout this prediction, for Epic-X

then cut it in half for Epic-S?

Roughly to SSD...

5K 24fps at 3:1 or greater... (recommend 5:1)
5K 48fps at 6:1 or greater...
5K 60fps at 8:1 or greater...
5K 72fps at 9:1 or greater...
5K 96fps (or 120fps 2.40:1) at 12:1
