  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC-S (old Scarlet S35) update...

EPIC-S @ 5k 120fps is not possible.

Jim

it's mostly about datarates...

2k seems pretty likely. don't ever take my word for it... we'll see soon enough.

1. 24p 5k camera for $12K.
2. Half Data rate( I am not sure what that means) because the epic-x data rate is like redcode 100. the Red-mx is a fabulous 42)
3.HDRX
4. uses canon lenses in plus autofocus
5. can fit in your back pocket
6. unbelievable tech support
7.

The problem with simply cutting the compression ratio in half is that the data throughput may be limited by the speed of the SSD drives themselves. As in there is still somewhat of a bottleneck caused by the how quickly the drives can write data. 14 minutes of Redcode 3:1 5k on a 128 GB drive means 152 MB/s, but it may be that Epic is capable of writing faster than that -- just not with the current drives. As I recall, originally Scarlet S35 was going to do RC100, which may or may not mean it could write upwards of 100MB/s, and may or may not mean that the Epic S will get closer to the Epic X compression limitations, given that we're all going to be using the SSDs anyway.

Not possible... no matter what we do, someone will want more.

Frankly, I expected less... I mean the price ! I expected an Epic-S around 8-9k$. But I didn't thought about new body and other upgrades. 12K + all needed accessories would get me around 22k+EU duty charges(20%). Wich is more that I could afford at this time. :mad2:

So, Jim, I'm really sorry but I'l go with an other camera first !

... I'll go with SCARLET ! :emote_happyhappy: And buy Epic-S later !

I know many of you are waiting to hear what is happening on the EPIC-S front. While I still don't have final details from the engineers, here is what we know now.

1. We have moved from the less robust Scarlet S35 chassis to the EPIC S35 chassis (like going from the economy car frame to the truck frame). Pro, not prosumer.

2. We are trying to maximize the performance specs given the cost cutting from the hardware, including board reductions. This is no small task but is a primary focus within engineering.

3. Frame rates and data rates in combination with project sizes will be the primary compromises in comparison with the big brothers (EPIC-X and EPIC-M). You can anticipate about 1/2 the overall data throughput. As soon as the engineers finalize the list... I will post it.

4. HDRx will be included, but with limited frame rate options as is anticipated in #3 above.

5. Price has risen due to the chassis and HDRx change/additions. Expect somewhere in the neighborhood of $12K. Package prices will be posted as soon as we are sure what they will be. We will not post another "interim" price structure in the meantime. Next price posting will be final.

6. EPIC-S will use the same production line as its big brothers (which we are setting up now in California) so there will be no additional delays to produce this model. However, the EPIC-M and EPIC-X models will be released 1st as has previously been noted.

7. EPIC-Ms are currently being produced in low quantities and will step up just a bit this month (January). Production EPIC-X is scheduled to begin small production end of February with a fairly significant ramp up in March. Major volume begins in April. Many of you will have your EPIC-X by NAB. EPIC-S should begin production in May... depending on EPIC-X orders.

We are now pretty comfortable with these schedules, but you know how things are. Read my tagline. I will say that our team has finally turned the corner at hitting their marks.

Given the competitive landscape, we think that the EPIC-S will have no price/performance competition. Think 5K, REDCODE RAW, HDRx, record to SSD, modular system, size of a Hasselblad with many mature professional workflow options.

Jim

Epic-S is my choice.

Why?

First thanks to my P+S mount experimentalism with R1 #694 I already lost a seat to Epic-X.

Second: Epic-M is still attractive and open variant but I didn't make any decision to move forward and make order till today...???!!!

That means Epic-S sometimes before or after Summer 2011 is a real thing for me.

I don't need more speed than is 25/24 fps for my sort of narrative drama work

and if Epic-S would give me even 60 fps that also I will welcome and appreciate but also it is not in a big need.

If I need more speed something about 1000 fps that Epic can't give to me and I'll go for another camera in that case.

Also I'm not so 3D guy at the moment just because that sort of production blowing equipment costs and also camera system weight.

I'm more in tradition of Nouvelle Vague's Raoul Coutard with Jean-Luc Godard style of shooting with lightweight handheld, lightweight tripod,

lightweight steadicam, lightweight cineslider or dolly, lightweight cranes, etc,...

Also till then with a big hope that RED will finally fix color matrix to get its look more in direction like a famous film stocks.

And I stay with incredible GH2 till I can put my hands on Epic-S in 6-9 months from now.

Thanks Jim this is great news, and keep up the great work you're doing on all the upcoming red DSMC !

Thanks for the update Jim. Much appreciated. :)

Happy New Year to everyone at RED !

Thank you for the update, Jim. Now the same for the Fixed Scarlet, please. (Yes, I know, we are insatiable...)

Don't get me wrong there Jim, i just was not sure if it was a conscious choice for 24fps shooting or a technical limit...and i'm in 25fps land that's all. I can always drop down to a disappointing 4.5K and get the frame rates...jeez, the sacrifices we have to make:)

Jim's secret business model. Sell lots of cheap 4k, then 5k cameras. But first invest in storage companies.

Invest in oil...THEN build the car. :banghead:

Jim this is just a suggestion; but these are the items I would like to see in any package. It basically covers everything the indi user (or person this camera is aimed at) needs to get started.

Epic-S (with the same side handle as the one in the Fixed Scarlet Video)
Option of Mount PL, Canon etc.
5" Monitor (I think the 2.8" would be too small for this camera. Also most Epic-S users will prob use it for their main on camera monitor)
128 SSD, Side Module, 1.8" SSD Reader/Red Station
Redmote
2 Batterys (Long life bricks if possible at least 1hr from each) and Charger
Base Plate

Hope you consider this

I know its been challenging and at times it must have seemed pretty elusive, but you did it, You and your Team, and I thank you for committing to this program when, let's face it, you didn't have to. I really do appreciate your dedication and leadership on this.

While the dumbasses at Harvard might not have wanted to hear your story, I certainly do. Your professional career holds many lessons and I'd really like to hear about that journey. You are about to deliver a product I've dreamed about my entire professional life, and you did it when no one else thought it was possible. For that reason alone, I really need to know the nuts and bolts of how and when.

You are an American Business success story of the first order and your biography will inspire many more after you. I really hope you can find some time to devote to this, I think its important. This isn't about stoking your ego, I genuinely believe there is actionable insight in what you have to share.
+1. :)

Epic-x, Epic-S, Scarlet

Can't wait... good stuff!

bye-bye DSLR's, please..... enough already with these toys.
