  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC-S (old Scarlet S35) update...

If any of you ever want the challenge of your life... build an electronic camera. And make sure it has better specs than anything ever on the market. Then put it in a box smaller than anyone deems sane.

Jim

that's why my life evolves around this site every day...!

I just dreamed I was reading a thread from Jim about something patently wonderful happening. And then, poof! I woke up. The dream fades but the warm fuzzy feeling remains.

Jim, thanks for the news!

Hopefully you can consider a basic Epic-S package for us poor folk, that includes all the basic items needed to get the camera running + a CF module for a special discount price.

It would be also great if there could be a special discount on for example the RED 17-50 when you buy an EPIC, like 20% discount on the lens or something.

Yes... Canon mounts are complete and functioning ( just fine tuning the auto focus and adding more and more lenses to the database ) . Nikon mount en route.

Jarred, are any of these lenses 3rd party, like Tokina, Tamron, etc. (in the Canon mount)?

Just wondering as I'm sure there are LOADS of potential customers with Canon-mount glass, many non-Canon, which would make entry-price into the Epic-S system much more enticing and sell many more cameras! But, I'm sure you're way ahead of me on that.

Jarred, don't you go pulling an erik widding on us with the Nikon mount...I've invested too much on good Nikon lenses already.

i am for bundles too, but the rpz is already 70% cheaper than the cheapeast comparable zoom-the optimo rouge zoom
i guess not

Considering that a Leica S2 brain costs $23,000 ... $12k for all this magic is quite nice :) with our low serial #, really just hoping to be able to do Stage 3 by June or July. Thanks so much for the update Jim.

Will the Epic-S have an HD-SDI connector or is it going to have the same HDMI connector as the Scarlet 2/3"?

Frame rates. Are their importance being slightly overplayed?

I am now an independent documentary guy, but when I worked on film sets, it was relatively rare to when the camera was running at anything besides 24fps save the occasional call for 48fps.

I have full appreciation for the amazing high speed digital shots I have seen shot on Phantom, etc. But to say that Epic-s is less a cinematic camera purely because of frame rates is a stretch IMHO. I can understand the big-budget argument of spending just 14k more to have the option. If I am not mistaken, the Arri 535 only extended to 60fps?

It is a STUNNING technical feat to have built in the ability for 5k @ 120 fps.

All this said, it is nothing short of inspiring to be reading and seeing what Jim and team are doing. I'm in (several times) 12k. There may even be an Epic-X in my future depending on how the data rates finalize.

We have some Sigma and Tokina lenses calibrated already. Tamron lenses are a bit slow in the focus motor department so are harder to calibrate so we have only done a couple of them.

ha ha mount hardware is complete.. just need to do finish the software side. had to choose which one came first, and Canon won with a flip of a coin.

I already had hoped that the dslrs would dissapear rather quickly and become replaced by high end tools again, instead of moving 1 step backwards

I don't say they can't produce wonderfull images, but there not built for that market...
