  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC-S (old Scarlet S35) update...

Canon and Nikon are cool. But what's up with the Red electronic mount.
And zooms to go with it...coming at cameras release or after.

I know many of you are waiting to hear what is happening on the EPIC-S front. While I still don't have final details from the engineers, here is what we know now.

1. We have moved from the less robust Scarlet S35 chassis to the EPIC S35 chassis (like going from the economy car frame to the truck frame). Pro, not prosumer.

2. We are trying to maximize the performance specs given the cost cutting from the hardware, including board reductions. This is no small task but is a primary focus within engineering.

3. Frame rates and data rates in combination with project sizes will be the primary compromises in comparison with the big brothers (EPIC-X and EPIC-M). You can anticipate about 1/2 the overall data throughput. As soon as the engineers finalize the list... I will post it.

4. HDRx™ will be included, but with limited frame rate options as is anticipated in #3 above.

5. Price has risen due to the chassis and HDRx™ change/additions. Expect somewhere in the neighborhood of $12K. Package prices will be posted as soon as we are sure what they will be. We will not post another "interim" price structure in the meantime. Next price posting will be final.

6. EPIC-S will use the same production line as its big brothers (which we are setting up now in California) so there will be no additional delays to produce this model. However, the EPIC-M and EPIC-X models will be released 1st as has previously been noted.

7. EPIC-Ms are currently being produced in low quantities and will step up just a bit this month (January). Production EPIC-X is scheduled to begin small production end of February with a fairly significant ramp up in March. Major volume begins in April. Many of you will have your EPIC-X by NAB. EPIC-S should begin production in May... depending on EPIC-X orders.

We are now pretty comfortable with these schedules, but you know how things are. Read my tagline. I will say that our team has finally turned the corner at hitting their marks.

Given the competitive landscape, we think that the EPIC-S will have no price/performance competition. Think 5K, REDCODE RAW, HDRx™, record to SSD, modular system, size of a Hasselblad with many mature professional workflow options.

Dear Jim,

Which month the stage 3 consumers could possibly expect their Epic X?
 
Jarred, obviously the first RED electronic lens is going to be in the Scarlet 2/3rd Fixed. How much of the "big boy's" performance will we be able to see from that lens? Will we get similar focusing speed and accuracy characteristics?
 
i remember them being extremely thrilled with the fixed lens... it should be really good. how it will compare to the new electronic lenses, well i dunno.
 
Yeah, in the few minutes I had with it, it was really sweet. rocker zoom was smooth.

The thing that impressed me most was that it was the first time I had ever seen an electronic lens with a lens ring that handled like a pro cinema grade lens. It has the best of both worlds, pro cinema grade level mechanics with modern electronic capabilities (like auto-focus). The beauty is being able to switch between auto and manual without sacrificing quality. Cheap plastic rings not spoken here.
 
Is the rotatable dial on the REDmote as solid and smooth as it is on the Canon DSLR line? No more sloppy buttons like on the original EVF, please ;-)

Pardon my ignorance, but what is the difference between the pro RED electric lenses and the pro RED lenses available now? Is it the touch focus and focus tracking will only work on the new RED electric lenses?

Yes and also do you know of a ball park price point for this (the fixed lens) ? (with the "subject to change and probably will" warning of course :) )

I'm also curious as to why the housing change to the more robust truck design? Is this for the cooling and HDR purposes? Or more is it more for keeping everything that RED builds of professional quality. And of course what housing are you thinking for the fixed.

Jarred,

I have a question that is in my mind for quite some time now.
Would it be possible to control external focus motors like the Heden or others through the Epic (and even power it)?

That would be a nice addition to the modular possibilities of the camera and keeping the rig compact.

Thought as much but just wanted clarification. Be interesting to see how long after EPIC release these lenses appear and pricing.

I don't say they can't produce wonderfull images, but there not built for that market...

Some DSLR lenses give excellent results if controlled by electronic follow-focus- and for productions with lots of movement they are lighter which is meaningful. They are not a step backward in many applications.

DSLR bodies as video cams are a huge step backward to Betacam SP resolution, but many of the lenses themselves are great.
 
Looks promissing... Even if for indie filmmaker on a budget, most of us may have to go or start with DSLR lens. Talking about this subject Jarred, so AF for EF lens is supposed to be supported , what about IS for long lens?

Any info concerning the new zoom coming? Spec and price estimation?

All of this have consequence on our today decision to investigate...
