  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

V-Raptor Sensor Issues

I wonder when and how long this will take to implement and if they will share images of pre and post "light trap". It's been MONTHS for some sort of response from Red. The acknowledged it in the Red Support area as Phil mentioned, but that was also much after the sensor issues were popping up quite a bit.

I do think that with the proper design it's possible to make it almost invisible, this is why the Monstro VV and Mini LF / LF don't show it when a lens and mount is on. I think they were engineered to mitigate that, or with the flange distance on those cameras it was happenstance. The RF mount is adaptable, but I think was the wrong call for a camera with a stitched sensor. The XL will probably not have this issue.

That said, my V-Raptor is for sale in the Marketplace if anyone is interested.

Are you selling because you're not confident the fix will actually work or for some other reason?

Other reasons, Jarred stated that they had a fix and many Red users say they don’t see it so I’m going to trust them on that and move on.

Finally I have it on my VRaptor ST. Tokina Vista Prime. Tilta PL. w Matte Box BT Misfit. black shaded before the shoot.

Thanks for sharing Ahmed. I don't think black shading has anything to do with it. Correct me if I'm wrong. It's so sad to see how easily the split happens when sunlight hits the sensor.

It’ll be interesting to see if this is implemented on all new V-Raptor builds, optional at purchase or you have to request it. Also, it seems like there’s a trade off for another image issue with the “shadow” but we won’t know until they start installing or shipping out fixed versions. It’s disappointing there’s not more information or images. As of last week I asked Red Service if I could send it in and they do not have the fix ready, I was also not contacted about this to send it in.

Do y’all think they will do this on new V-Raptors and do you think it’ll be implemented on the V-Raptor XLarge?

I really hope this works the sensor tech is great, this was just overlooked. I hope they solve the issue.

I wish there was more explanation as to exactly what this modification consists of, like a picture of it?

Some thoughts.

First, nice to see I'm not crazy as their assessment lines up with literally everything I've been saying, tinkered with, an demonstrated.

Jon - It sounds like they have made a shroud or light trap with hard edges or a lip in particularly in the horizontal. Will likely give more DSMC2-like gate flare if panning across a flaring source. Gate flare is one of those things that's literally different on every camera btw due to the unique things happening within the sensor chamber. All well discussed here over the years. I believe that is what is being referred to as a shadow, but until I test it, in particular side by side with a non "shrouded" cam I won't know for sure.

Charles - Don't know if this will be a thing they do for all camera. Like I have been saying this for some has been a non-issue, for others it's been an issue. It would be interesting to know what RED plans to do either way.

As for XL, it's sensor chamber will be different due to the interchangeable lens mounts, I'm sure RED is taking all of this in consideration regarding all of that.

Delighted to hear there is a fix!! fingers crossed!

DSMC2 gate flare is fine... (all cameras I have seen suffer occasionally from gate shadow moments)

PS if it is much worse than DSMC2 then I hope people like John (Kippertie) jump in with a different solution..

2-3 weeks as of today until the parts are available for the Sensor Stitch Fix. So I’d imagine June would be the earliest we’d get it back to test. Realistically, end of June / Beginning of July to make sure the solution works.

My RF mount lock has become loose, a lot of people experiencing this as well.

Will keep this thread updated with my progress and then also a before and after of the hardware solution that the engineers have been working. The swappable OLPF was turned around quicker so I’d imagine this is much more involved in terms of hardware.

same here.
sorry to sidetrack the thread but has anyone had their mount repaired/is there another thread about this issue? what was the turnaround time?
i just sent mine in for repair.

I had my mount replaced due to a on set accident with a director. It was less than I was expecting, sub 500. To have the ring tightened I'm sure would be a warranty repair.

I have the Kippertie Stratta and I still can produce a sensor split seam but only on the vertical so far not on a horizontal axis.

i sent my Raptor in about 1 month ago to have the mount repaired. warranty repair, no cost. got it back in about a week.
It feels like their fix was to tighten it extremely... by using it i know its going to become loose again in a month or two.

i have no experience with RF lenses or Canon bodies, so i don't know if i got a lemon or this was an all-out stupid decision, but i'm bummed.

I have a been offered the repair for my raptor by RED but have been busy shooting projects and have learned to just be carful for the lighting situations that causes the problem. Planning to send mine in soon but I'd also love to hear from anyone who has sent theirs in.

Was sent an email a few weeks ago that the materials for the "Flare Guard" to reduce the sensor stitch illumination was now in stock. My RF mount had also gone bad ( no longer locking ) and the materials for that upgrade are now available as well. I sent my camera in this Tuesday, arrived Wednesday ( Red no longer does pick up / drop off in Irvine ) and I'll keep y'all how long it takes and also if they sensor issue is fixed. I'll keep my findings strictly observational when I get it back. I'm also curious as to if the new ones rolling off the line are changed or if the new XL has a new internal optical path.

I would bet that the XL has a lot of difference in the optical path. It has a completely different mount system and the internal ND's so yeah there's going to be some major difference in the way that light gets to the sensor.. Only big questions is does it have a similar issue with the sensor seam.????? Im sure were all kind of holding our breaths...
I got a similar email and will send in my camera when I done with this shoot in about 2 weeks. I have the same issues as you Charles, loose mount and the same need for flare guard sensor seam artifact thingy ..
