  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

V-Raptor Sensor Issues

I was super concerned about this issue and how alarming people posting about it online have been but in reality every red camera I have had has had some artifact or issue with a sharply angled backlight source. My epic had the dots, my dragon the gate shadow, and my Gemini does it too. I shoot outdoors and action sports a ton and extreme backlight is something I am always playing with. I have had the Raptor for a few months now and because of all the drama online I tested mine and found I too could create the split sensor artifact. I was disappointed as I hoped it would be isolated to a few cameras and I hope there is a fix coming, however I have had this camera out on a bunch of jobs and have not run into this issue at all. If it was a problem on a shoot with a specific shot it is nothing that a matte box with a flag wouldn't solve. So far I am blow away with the new tech and possibilities this camera allows.

You are right, imperfections of previous RED sensors (dots on Epic and gate shadows on Dragon and Gemini) are not a deal breaker. I've been the owner of those cameras and now I'm on a Helium sensor. However the Raptor split sensor makes the footage pretty much unusable, right? From the user experience shared on the forum matte box it's not a solution. Here in New York the few rental houses that carry Raptor are renting for cheaper than Monstro and Gemini...I wonder why.

It’s something that Red needs to address and fix publicly. The split sensor issue is enough to make DPs and Production weary at this point. The point above that Gemini and Monstro are renting for more is true and unfortunate due to capability of the camera outside of this issue. Hopefully, they’ll address customers with a fix and have an optional trade in for a fix.

Making these kind of devices is hard, especially when reaching for optimum performance. That said, at this point, lacking a clear response from RED - even their most loyal advocates are put in a difficult situation. It also allows time for theories to incubate and fill the void left by RED's lack of a definitive policy. Did they miss it in QC? Did they decide it was a corner case few would discover? Neither answer puts RED in a particularly good light.

I hope they are able to resolve this sooner than later, while respecting that it may take a little time to decide exactly how.

Cheers - #19

Multiple people have reported the same issue using RF mount lenses. I found the problem with all focal lengths from 16mm to 135mm in both EF & PL mount lenses.

I'm going to test RF mount lenses this week, and also see if the issue occurs with the sun.

Sounds like a great test. I've seen the split happening with natural light on backlit shots. Keep us posted on your discoveries. Best.

this is mine today.
i'm an ignoramus when it comes to sensor technology/jargon/etc... but when i had the lens off for a split second it became super obvious?

....that's it, obviously no one would shoot with the lens off, but that's the artifact. It's lessened by a lens and which angle the light enters, but it'll always be an issue.

Which rental houses???

I'm not sure about NY rental houses, but here in LA there hasn't been much demand for the Raptor yet. Multiple rental houses have told me this & 2 of them have said they haven't had single call for the Raptor. I don't know if this has anything to do with sensor split as none of them had mentioned the issue.

One thing I do know for sure is the LA DIT community is very aware of the issue (as Charles mentioned above). Given they are responsible for image QC, they are making sure their DP's are aware also.

Come on RED! even a hey were working on it and will let you know, would help quash a lot of this concern... Its not like its going to go away any time soon... and Im sure techs are working on it but maybe trying to figure out the the best path forward. But even hearing that would help. No news is like putting your head in the sand and hoping that it "will just disappear"...
Look this would be the new and is the new gold standard for camera tech... Its an amazing camera...But this issue is dragging it down..

My response from Red has been that it’s “normal” but I can send it in. Which I’ve been hesitant to do, it’ll just sit in purgatory. It’s most likely going to be a sale for me at this point. DITs roll their eyes to the back of their head when they hear Raptor and I tend to agree at this point with Red’s non-response.

When did you last hear from them?

Wow. Well that’s why you don’t release a big camera like this on Facebook and Instagram.

suxks that’s what red does now.

no industy splash no understanding of what the camera is

Going by what Charles said about the DIT community, perhaps the problem is the industry understanding the camera a little too well? :)

Regardless of Raptor’s image quality 99% of the time, if the only solution to the artifact is “buy the XL” and if Red continues to be silent, then the resale/rental value is probably going to drop further once the XL is released.

I mean Zack Snyder shooting his next movie on V-Raptor you think he would ask the DITs for their choice of the camera?
