  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

V-Raptor Sensor Issues

We've got the same sensor issues with the KipperTie Strata PL-ND Mount and the flare guard. Very sad that the old Monstro sensor is more reliable than this one.

I played with the Strata ND and it fixed it ‘enough’ for me… your combo of lenses etc must me very artefact inducing.. sorry to hear!

Is there any hope for this to be solved?

While i've only seen the issue in footage once, and none at all since having the flare guard installed, I do really hope that Red's own rf-PL mount totally eliminates this as a discussion. Based on what Daniel said about producing it on monstro once he took the PL mount off, it almost certainly says that this isn't a sensor issue. It really is about the stray light hitting the sensor, so hopefully Red fully addresses this with its new mount. Though their approach thus far has seemed to be, "let's not talk about it, and maybe everyone will forget about it". I will also say that, Red really should have produced its own mount for raptor from it was released, seems like a weird decision to have relied on 3rd party manufactures to make a part that was so vital to the user experience of your system.

Agree. I can't understand why on earth they where not:

1. First on the market with a RF to PL adapter.

2. Designed Komodo and Raptor in such way that the front of the cameras had identical machined flat surfaces with inserts so they could share the same adapter and mount it in a sturdy / nice way.

I mean they know long before anyone else that they where making RF mount cameras and it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that yes people want to be able to mount PL lenses on such cameras.

And then Raptor comes out having that lip on the top so the Kippertie revolva can't be used... It's like what, wait, who did, why?

I wanted to sell my Monstro package to buy a Raptor (or Xl) but I have many doubts with those issues. And the XL is a tad too big (or overkill) Imho.

Not sure I get what you mean by that? I haven't used the Raptor without Revolva so far:

I think it *may* not be compatible with RED’s DSMC3 monitor and its mount. I’m not sure though as I use the Cine7 and do not own the Revolva.

Right, the DSMC3 monitor could be the problem, but Björn mentioned that lip on the top which confused me because it doesn't get in the way with Revolva, there is still a gap. I too use a different monitor and can'f tell how Revolva and DSMC3 monitor can be combined, or not, but there is a risa available which should resolva this monitor problem:

I might be mistaken. But I’m quite sure the kippertie guys said the revolva does not fit. Could it be the PL revolva that does not fit? Looks like the one on the pictures above is ef, or?

KipperTie guys probably know their mounts :)
Indeed, for Raptor XL, the Revolva won't fit:

https://support.red.com/hc/en-us/ar...V-RAPTOR-XL-Lens-and-Lens-Mount-Compatibility

But RF on the regular Raptor leaves about 4.7 mm a gap on the top end.

XL has internal ND and comes with a PL mount as I understand. So yes does not make sense to have a revolva.

But I think the Kippertie comment was about the normal raptor and their solution was to make this new mount with built in ND for it.

So I had my first shooting experience with Raptor. (Monstro is still our main workhorse)

I wanted to check the sensor split issue, so I slightly removed the body cap. There it was. A massive line in the middle of the frame. I was shocked and quickly grabbed our Monstro wit PL mount to reproduce the same line. But there was no line visible. I was pretty sure the PL mount kept it from the split issue, so I removed it from the camera. And there it was..

I came to the conclusion that this would definitely be the cause of the lower flange distance on Raptor.

Unfortunately it happened on set with lenses attached..
Our light setup was low key. Product shots with light hits. Never had a single issue with our Monstro! But most of the shots with Raptor are unusable ..

I am very disappointed with Raptor, as I really wanted to „upgrade“ to XL.

Keeping my fingers crossed!

Heartbreaking. I'm coming back to this post after a long time and it seems that RED hasn't been able to fix the split issue on V-Raptor.

I‘ve extensively tried to recreate this issue on an Alexa LF, but was only able to recreate the split glitch without a lens attached, by putting some light on the sensor. It behaved very similar to Monstro. In my eyes Monstro handled it even better than Alexa LF.

So to conclude: RED once did it best, but made it to the worst. That most probably reduced the price tag of the camera for the consumer market.

I finally have the certainty and won’t do any further tests, as they became totally useless from now on. I guess I just have to live with a line in my lens flares.

Over and out.

Heartbreaking for us too. We had been holding off on our purchase to see if the situation would get better. Definitely hoping the flocking would help. Might still rent one for an upcoming shoot just to be sure, but it looks like we might have to look at other options. Either a DSMC 2 body or an Arri.

Yeah and to make things more complicated it now seems that DSMC2 it’s coming to an end…I’ve tried to trade my CF Weapon Helium (8K 60fps) to Adorama NYC and they offered me 3K. They told me it’s because RED won’t service DSMC2. B&H NY offered me nothing for the same reason. I agree that DSMC2 seems a better option to avoid the sensor split glitch but not sure it’s gonna last much longer.

This is great to hear, about to pick up Raptor and I've been doing a little digging on the stitch issue. We shoot flares often in our work. Anyone else who owns this camera I'd appreciate any input or advice.

They are saying the Komodo X is as good as the Alexa 35 in dynamic range. Why not add a speed booster?

Who is saying that? Everything I've seen on Komodo-X shows a little more wiggle room in the shadows, but the Arri 35 beats everything in highlight performance.
