  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Update......

Hey how about some aluminum love for CF!!!

Brent, your example of the diamonds is excellent... I am not sure people realize that sensor yield is really difficult and the rejection rate for sensors is huge. Not just for RED but for all companies.
So making a sensor for the 8K Weapon must be exponentially difficult. Ask the IMAX 3D digital folks.

Great things are worth waiting for. Like a fine wine.

Thanks for the update! It's amazing when a company asked clients if they want to save money.

Question for current Forged Weapon owners, are we able to speak to our Bomb Squad Reps and get an indication of where we lie in the upgrade process to 8k to help us plan? I have an 8K production that supposed to start shooting end of Jan.

Peter, I love analogies to help me get things so figured might apply here as well.

Jacob, we actually are shooting final ID next week, so right around the corner on the bits that come with the RAVEN packages...

Michael, your reps don't know the allocation queue so would not help, sorry.

You really need appreciate what is being done here when you think of it in those terms. Peter I don't think IMAX has the R&D budget. It puts 65mm sensors into perspective and gives me the thought that we may have to wait a few years for that one. Having seen the new CHRISTIE 8K IMAX laser dome system in action I can't wait.

Thanks Brent, hopefully I'm up there.

Very exciting news that most CF upgrades will be done between now and the end of the year. Even though that's a short window I'm still contemplating forged… If that bumps me a little closer to the front of the line when it comes time for 8K… ?

Not that it matters, but +1 on Aluminum parts to save $3k - $5k... in fact, with that saving, i'd rather take an extra Raven as cam B for our package...
Thanks Jarred... Thanks RED!
You guys keep raising the bar, even with discounts/savings ;)

Talkijg about me personally, as an indie, I would say that drop in price is welcome, but if it implies or conditions future upgradeability to 8K i would rather pay those 3k or 4k more.

I just wanted you guys to say something that would give us something similar to our Red Epic times. I really don't expect 8K to be available for me even next year. Let the Carbons have it first. I just want you guys to give us a chance to get that sensor and performance further down the line...

The carbon pricing is impossible for me, but I assure you if you guys give me a chance with magnesium (old epc x non m) type of deal to get 8K, I will definitely upgrade , be thankful and create the most stunning motorsports footage you've ever seen from Macau!

For the record I wouldn't mind my CF having more aluminum either lol

The mechanicals don't affect the possibility of an upgrade to 8k. It is the difference of the boards inside. The Carbon vs the Magnesium have different internals, and the MG boards are not capable of handling the 8K sensor. So if you wanted to upgrade from a magnesium to an 8k you would need to first upgrade all your (very expensive) internal boards, and then the sensor, and by that time you are paying much much more money than if you just did it the carbon way first.

Seems about time for an update since it's been awhile.

6k Carbon Weapon upgrades are happening at a steady pace and we are trying to get through all of them by the end of next month then jump right into the Magnesium Weapons.

Raven pre-production is humming along.... the production 4.5k sensors should be coming in very soon, looks like we only lost a few weeks on that resolution bump up and the rest of the camera is ready for action, so we still look good on shipping in March after the assembly lines clear up. I have been taking the Raven prototype with me on my recent globetrotting and it is really is a killer. Getting this much image quality from a camera in this price bracket is phenomenal.

8K Weapon- We are still going to ship the first batch of 8K Weapons out to the wild in 2015.. and then there will be a gap as we build up the next batch of sensors . Each batch is gonna take a few months....We are taking our time with the 8K. It is a stupidly slow, expensive train with an intense QC process and making these sensors is almost impossible with a huge amount of yield fallout ( hence the price ) . But damn is it worth it. Once you shoot the 8K its really hard to go back.. The VV sensor size with this much resolution, dynamic range and frame rates is a monumental leap on every level. It really is the king of ALL cameras.

O back to the Magnesium upgrades for a second... I have a question for all of you in that upgrade line. I have a proposal for you guys straight from our manufacturing team. We can shave a few grand (3k-5k) off the price if we switch some of the internals to aluminum instead of magnesium.. The outside pieces will still be made out of magnesium so you will still inherit the weight savings but some of the internals we have an opportunity to gain a lot of efficiency in manufacturing and save you some cash.. Magnesium is stupidly cheap to cast but incredibly expensive to machine and it’s just not getting any cheaper or easier even with the increased volumes or the more that time goes by. I thought I would give you all a vote.

Just curious: how are Sony, Nikon and Canon able to offer Full Frame sensor for such low prices? Something to do with sensor complexity?

Jarred i asked this previous page im gonna ask it again. We should get on CF Weapon line just for priority or internals?
This time its different. We have different internals and specs.CF Dragon and MG one had no difference on electronics apart from less than kilo weight.
