  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Update......

When your CF weapon gets called can you switch to forged and not loose place in line?

Jarred if you did not tell us it could be gingerbread cookies in there instead of magnesium and we would not even know :)

Just do it and slice the price. Its quite big difference in price. It will matter to many.

Where in the entire history of camera manufacturers was there ever a company that discussed price point with its user base with such transparency and openness??? This is why I love Red (this and the fact that they make pretty awesome cameras).
Yes, If I can save 5K on the upgrade by having aluminum internals I would definitely upgrade.

Yeah... that seems fair from a customer perspective doesn't it? Maybe our official policy was different and there was probably a very sound, logical business reason for it to be as such, but if it was, then I guess it just changed. :)

fair as hell! thank you, yes because it was a hard decision not knowing what the v lock expander was at the time, or the handle, but now its looking like staying with red products for the all in one module might be the best solution for me, though are the brain and the pkgs due in march, or do the pkgs still have to wait until a month later?
last question, i bought a few 512 cards from someone that was doing a big feature, but then it got cancelled, they are brand new in the packaging, but now i see the RED color ones! anyway to exchange them for those, i want RED cards! haha!

Seems about time for an update since it's been awhile.

6k Carbon Weapon upgrades are happening at a steady pace and we are trying to get through all of them by the end of next month then jump right into the Magnesium Weapons.

Good to hear. How should we parse the above to estimate arrival of brand-new CF Weapon orders made in the NAB window? Same timeframe? A little earlier? I have a shoot scheduled between X-mas and N-Years and would love to have a CF WEAPON 6K as my A-camera (even if I have to wait until 2016 to get the 8K sensor I ordered along with it). Thanks!

See, this is what I love about RED. They actually reach out and involve the customers and the userbase in the entire manufacturing process from beginning to end. Now, I can't speak for everybody but from what I've been reading on the boards, many would rather opt for price savings for the Weapon upgrade path. Me, personally, I wouldn't care if the whole thing was aluminum, just as long as it films a great image! :) Aluminum internals with price savings is my vote!

back to the Magnesium upgrades for a second... I have a question for all of you in that upgrade line. I have a proposal for you guys straight from our manufacturing team. We can shave a few grand (3k-5k) off the price if we switch some of the internals to aluminum instead of magnesium.. The outside pieces will still be made out of magnesium so you will still inherit the weight savings but some of the internals we have an opportunity to gain a lot of efficiency in manufacturing and save you some cash.. Magnesium is stupidly cheap to cast but incredibly expensive to machine and it’s just not getting any cheaper or easier even with the increased volumes or the more that time goes by. I thought I would give you all a vote.

This all sounds great...however, I'm one of those who upgraded two Epic-M Dragon bodies to MG at NAB because we couldn't afford to do the Carbon or Woven then, but still want to get to 8K. You've always said there will be a path at some point for the MG bodies but we don't know when or how that would happen. I realize the internal processing on the Carbons are faster and thus capable of handling 8K but anything you could do to help us better understand the roadmap would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks dude.

I would also love to know the road map to upgrade Mag to 8K. When I ordered I could not justify the extra expense of going CF at that time but really do want to know how I can get to 8K from my MG upgrade.

Trust me -I want to get to 8K! However it appears MG/Aluminum is a ways off. I would love to figure out a way to get to Carbon or Forged based on how we did our initial deposits.

Great company spirit.
Any update for scarlet owners too?

+1 for adding the aluminum internal parts for the discount. I'll take whatever you can give out... I'm still on the fence for the upgrade to Weapon 6K from our Epic/Dragons, but this definitely helps persuade our two cameras to make the jump.

Jarrod, thanks for doing what you can to help us owner/ops!

The simplest thing I can say about Weapon in comparison to my much beloved Epic Dragon (who is now up in camera heaven since upgrading) is that Weapon is literally better in every possible way.

I've listed the features before, but really, once you start shooting with it, you'll get the whole concept pretty quickly. The fact that the image quality is notably better due to REDCODE RAW compression ratio/data transfer/processor improvements, the changes that have been made to the optical path, and whatever other voodoo they do to get rid of CMOS smear. Those things right there are big. I'm shocked how often I'm using the WiFi, great for motion control really. ProRes has been nice so far when needed.

When you look at what the competition is and will be offering in this industry Weapon just makes a lot of sense. Still nothing really touching it at 6K or 8K.

Brent removed just the right amount of keys off my keyboard so i can't type out anything to do with that just yet :)

Ooooh.... I really hope my 8K Weapon is in the first batch. :) I guess I'm wondering how that all works out in terms of who ordered 8K when and how the priority queue goes and...
