Seems about time for an update since it's been awhile.

6k Carbon Weapon upgrades are happening at a steady pace and we are trying to get through all of them by the end of next month then jump right into the Magnesium Weapons.

Raven pre-production is humming along.... the production 4.5k sensors should be coming in very soon, looks like we only lost a few weeks on that resolution bump up and the rest of the camera is ready for action, so we still look good on shipping in March after the assembly lines clear up. I have been taking the Raven prototype with me on my recent globetrotting and it is really is a killer. Getting this much image quality from a camera in this price bracket is phenomenal.

8K Weapon- We are still going to ship the first batch of 8K Weapons out to the wild in 2015.. and then there will be a gap as we build up the next batch of sensors . Each batch is gonna take a few months....We are taking our time with the 8K. It is a stupidly slow, expensive train with an intense QC process and making these sensors is almost impossible with a huge amount of yield fallout ( hence the price ) . But damn is it worth it. Once you shoot the 8K its really hard to go back.. The VV sensor size with this much resolution, dynamic range and frame rates is a monumental leap on every level. It really is the king of ALL cameras.

O back to the Magnesium upgrades for a second... I have a question for all of you in that upgrade line. I have a proposal for you guys straight from our manufacturing team. We can shave a few grand (3k-5k) off the price if we switch some of the internals to aluminum instead of magnesium.. The outside pieces will still be made out of magnesium so you will still inherit the weight savings but some of the internals we have an opportunity to gain a lot of efficiency in manufacturing and save you some cash.. Magnesium is stupidly cheap to cast but incredibly expensive to machine and it’s just not getting any cheaper or easier even with the increased volumes or the more that time goes by. I thought I would give you all a vote.

thanks! i wonder if that means the brain is shipping first still, or now the brain and the packages deals are shipping at the same time. only because i ordered just the brain because it was a month earlier, i think i made the order at 9:37pm :)
if they are at the same time now, id almost want to switch to a package deal...

Thanks for the update!

You can switch to or from packages with no place in line penalty. And just a heads up... there are some new bits coming as we get near to make that choice a bit more difficult ;)

YES Please

Hi Jarred,

Quick question as a new customer. I ordered a Raven, but could be interested in a Mag Weapon (with aluminum internals) for $3K to $5K less.

I'm assuming that the Raven is coming out a bit earlier than Mag Weapon for new customers, correct? If they are both available to new customers around the same time, I could be interested in the Weapon.

I've got 3 Epics, one earmarked for Weapon CF upgrade. I hadn't decided whether to upgrade the other two yet, but a $29.5k "Mag Upgrade Package" feels a lot more palatable than a $34.5k one.

wait what? you can???
i guess i was hearing different at the start of the frenzy, but it wasnt from you. that makes a big difference, and no more bits!
im so glad i got in on this! thank you jarred!

but so now both in march? or the brain in march and the pkg still a month later?

Quick question Jarred.

We have had a call up for a Carbon Dragon - Carbon Woven Weapon upgrade due in a week or two. That camera is also due an 8K upgrade in the first batch paid at NAB. If it's that close should we hold off and get it as an 8K camera (I'm assuming it's a return to LA for swapping and not Red Europe possible). Is there a way of checking how high up the NAB pre pay list it is and whether it is likely to ship 2015?

Already have 2 Forged Carbon Weapons in so could wait.

You struck the right chord for me there. 8K, VistaVision+, industry leading sensor tech. I've been waiting for this format for a long, long time. Might be because of what the format was initially created for, might be just the massive amount of potential 8K and the format represents. As of this month I'll have all my lenses together for 8K production. Been working hard on all that for over a year and the best bit is some of the lenses I've been using for over 15 years will be apart of that as well.

Fascinating update on Magnesium Weapon 6K. i've talked to a quite a few RED Epic Dragon owners and that change with Aluminum and price will make a massive difference in their upgrade decision.

Have to ask - any chance of skipping 6K and going straight to 8K? Seems like the time increment between the Epic-Weapon upgrade and the availability of 8K sensors has gotten pretty small for a number of us...

Cheers - #19

I've been asked that question quite a few times over the last month or so. . The 8K upgrade process is painfully slow... I can't stress that enough. The batches are small and its going to take us quite some time to get through the ever growing list. If you have already paid for your 6K upgrade you might as well do it to gain all the advancements that Weapon gives you, now, both physically and image quality wise.

+1! I did not order the Mag Weapon yet. A bit to expensive for me. A few grand off the price would be a game-changer for me. As long as the current upgrade package is the same!

Thanks for the updating...

Yeah... that seems fair from a customer perspective doesn't it? Maybe our official policy was different and there was probably a very sound, logical business reason for it to be as such, but if it was, then I guess it just changed. :)
