  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Don't cry!

For an absolutely once in a lifetime event, why not rent a RED ONE?

Compared to the cost of a Zero G flight I would think the expense would be fairly minor.

D

No, because I need to practise enough time with a REDcam before be able to use it properly (it's not as easy as ON/FRAME/FOCUS/ROLL, no ?) and I need to save money for my S35.

Besides, the cost of Zero G flight is almost "free" for me. We're sharing the total cost of the flight and we had a special arrangement as we're not there for science at all but for pure fun. :D

If any RED operator is interested to be a part of that ZERO-G flight, please contact me.

I think it has always been expected that the 2/3" will exhibit a lower "base" DR than the S35 chips just as S35 chips would have lower DR than the FF35 chips. Whether or not HDRx™™™™™ is a function of that base DR or is just a straightforward +6 stops is something we'll just have to wait to find out!

Well, if the base DR turns out be two stops lower, you'll be sadly stuck with only being able to get all the data from a shot with a dark barn and white tin on the sun.

Been checking the forums for years

I have checked red forms for years now almost daily. I am very excited for the Scarlet.. cant wait for the release. Maybe this year I tell myself. Your doing a great job red!

HDR quality in scaled HD mode?

HDR quality in scaled HD mode?

So - long time lurker - first time poster.

Given that the Scarlet has been confirmed to do 3k up to 30fps in camera HDR magic motion, or up to 3k 60fps dual stream HDR - what about using HDR in the HD scaled recording mode?

Can we assume that since the Scarlet has the power to scale 3k down to 1080p or 720p - could it then apply magic motion HDR to those lower res raw streams in real time - and at higher framerates? Of course it would first have to be able to do HD scaling on both the standard exposure and the highlight exposure at the same time... can it?

Since HD res has 1/2 to 1/4 the pixel count of 3k this sounds theoretically reasonable to me.

So assuming you use HDMI or throw on the extra output module - could you get an HD video out at 60fps 1080i/p, or 720p and enjoy 16-18 stops of DR for broadcast....?

It's interesting reading back through this thread.

So much "I know", "it'll have", "it must be", "it definitely will"....

You'll get what you get when it's ready for as much as it costs.

Just change the name of this thread to "Soothsayers"...

@ Jim: RED was never scaling in camera (other than for preview), so I doubt they would in the Scarlet. Faster frame rates will be achieved by windowing, I guess.
@ K Brown: See, I'm more decent in my wording ;-)

Actually scaled (not windowed) 1080 and 720 RGB (not REDcode) has always been in the specs for Scarlet and Epic.

I believe Ted said that not only is there an RGB codec, but the Scarlet will also be able to generate scaled 1080p/720p .R3D files.

Correct. RGB 1080/720P REDcode but not REDcode RAW (since they're RGB :)

HDRx is coming of age. Graeme has improved the toolkit. This is really worth it.

Keep driving and don't worry about the "Are we there yet" crowd Jim. I like where this trip is heading : )

Having read through some of the threads regarding Scarlet's price and delivery status I understand that some are disappointed and/or frustrated.

All I can say is that RED has rendered irrelevant the saying "you get what you pay for".

From what I see you get much more than you pay for so the wait is more than worth it.

Wow, haven't checked the site in a week, and I hardly recognize it due to the negativity...It seems like everyone woke up to poop in their frosted flakes and is complaining cause they ate it, if you don't like poop, don't eat it. Coincidentally, i do not think it is poop, and am here to take on the detracters.

1. If you can't afford it now because of the extra $1000, the you couldn't before. What computer set up do you have, how much storage space you got, what kind of lights you got? These are all part of the cost (unless all you do is shoot, then they're somebody else's cost)

2. How is Scarlet even close to Epic? I started following RED with the One, loved the idea, loved the idea of Scarlet, but over the last two years the Epic is the one I want, and how could you not? Scarlet is good, but Epic sets a bar where the only other camera that can come close to it won't be released till Scarlet comes out, which I see as RED trying to invade the broadcast market the same way they have film. Red will have three models of cameras, how many does Sony have?

3. Rental Houses. I love the people at rental houses, they let you play with all the toys till you find the one you like most, it's like Christmas every time you're in one. Having said that:

a. What are ya'll saying? You don't want to buy both Epics and Scarlets cause they're too similar? That's like saying you won't carry Arri and Pani 35mm's cause they both shoot film. If one director/producer/dp wants to use something different from the other, and vise-versa, let them, "This is the business we (ya'll) have chosen," - Hyman Roth

b. All this talk would convince me, if I was Jim, to raise the price of the Epic, which outperforms (fingers crossed) camera systems that you cannot purchase, but can only rent, and if people rent those pieces of junk, then they will rent the Epic, which will be way less to rent, I don't see a 2/3" camera without a pl mount messing that up

c. You are obviously making money without theses cameras, so it shouldn't matter when the actually do come out, and if you aren't then I am sorry, but waiting on Judgement Day doesn't solve it

In summation I love this company and what it is trying to do, I cannot wait to give them my money, but I'm still going to make mine with what I have, and not eat poop and then complain

I'm actually hopeful this reduces the chances of being crushed in the pro-sumer rush to the door.

Now, is HDRx™ interdependent upon REDcode RAW, or will people be able to tap into the benefits of HDRx™ while shooting in this new RGB REDcode codec?

I would bet it is, meaning we'll likely have extended DR even if recording REDCODE RGB.

It makes sense, right? I mean, the encoding happens after the exposures, and also would happen after the blending with the in-camera blending. So whatever they are recorded at the magic already happened before that step... 0.0002
