Scarlet will pay for itself

Scarlet will pay for itself

I bought a 7D some time ago. It's rubbish, but that's good enough for some clients. The good news is that it paid for itself in one job. The bigger clients are happy to pay for the rental of a Red One. With that in mind, a Scarlet will pay for itself after a couple of jobs.

If you really want a camera just for fun - because you don't make money from shooting - get a bunch of friends to put in $1000 each, and share. I know people who do this with aeroplanes and it works out fine.

Good decision. Now just make sure to WATCH the market and learn from it... otherwise it'll be your end, faster than you might expect.

Not sure what your background is but you DO know that, before RED, Jim built a very large company from the ground up and, as a result, he is now a billionaire. Something tells me he isn't short on business acumen. :wink5:

Just wanted to throw in another voice of support for the decision RED has made. As a future Scarlet (S35 & the Fixy) customer I am very happy that RED has decided to keep their focus on the Pro market. It means less compromise in the camera system, and that's why I am patiently waiting for these cameras. I am perfectly happy with the price increase for the level of features we will be getting.

RED doesn't need to go after the "volume" market, the 5D & 7D already have it. The price point that they are at directly speaks to the short comings of those particular cameras. The people whining about the difference in price between a 7D and the Scarlet fixed need to wake up...if the current DSLR is good enough for you and the clients you service, then more power to you...be happy with that. Don't get pissed off that a camera company, who has shaken the industry already with price point, can't deliver a RAW imaging pound cake sized camera to you for the less then the price of an HVX200

...by the way, I have never heard anyone bitch about the price of an hvx and its a WHOLE lot less of a camera.

2. Why does everyone feel they need to OWN a camera to be a filmmaker?

In my case, I have $25,000 in my budget for camera for a self produced doc.

That'll get me 20 days of rental with a mix of HPX500 and Varicam and I'd have to work really hard on scheduling.

Or I could buy 2 2/3 Scarlets with accessories, have them available 24/7 and be able to shoot on a much more flexible schedule.

I don't care so much what markets RED chooses to go after, I'm in the market now for another camera and I'm just bummed (not angry) the Scarlet/Epic stuff isn't ready quite yet. Oh well, next time around. I still want one. Alawt.

Does anyone think that the increased horsepower of the HDRx scarlet is "only" going to be used towards HDR. ... Red has a trackrecord ... Scarlet and Epic are not going to need as many upgrades as the RedOne, but Jim and team are not going to resist the temptation to tweak in a few other goodies. Just sayin. They love cameras just as much as their customers. MagicMotion just came "strolling by" - there will be more.

And for those who know lighting and crew budgets - 6 extra stops at 167 bucks per stop is not a good deal - it is the cinematic "steal of the century"

Original budget was $7k for me, now I have to budget $8k. If you really want something then you have to work for it, so Ill have to work for the extra $1k but its still not unfeasible. Hell, I can still cut down that budget to the bare bones fixed package and save some more.

And I also thing once the 3rd party accessories and used items start flowing, the start-up price will drop. Old RedBrick batteries will be gobbled up (since they last 3 hours, last we heard from Jim), and all the old accessories will still work and offer a cheap alternative to those that like to.... so called, bitch and whine.

Red is a professional movie camera company

Red is a professional movie camera company

We all knew that.

Some of us were hoping to buy a professional movie camera for $3k though =)

For the people who can make $3k and stretched to $5k and just can't make $6k this is a sad time.

For everyone who can afford the extra $1k the camera is still worth the price and it will be an amazing camera.

If you honestly can't afford it don't lose hope, the used market for scarlet will start up pretty fast as people move up to epic or move up to scarlet S35. The used market for redone will pick up as soon as epic is released. You may have to wait an extra year but you will be able to get what you need pretty soon.

There was a time when only filthy rich could drive a BMW. But today if you are willing to drive an old BMW nearly anyone can drive a BMW. Ten years from now that will be true of Red cameras.

A fully functioning Scarlet will cost around 4k? I think that is misleading information.

Not sure what your background is but you DO know that, before RED, Jim built a very large company from the ground up and, as a result, he is now a billionaire. Something tells me he isn't short on business acumen. :wink5:

I too have a lot of respect for Mr Jannard, especially recently, but your constant ass kissing is just a little embarrassing for a grown man don't you think?

I'm really happy with the addition of the new features. Unless you are new to red and this forum I feel like it was a bit obvious that a fully functioning scarlet was going to be costing around the 10k mark especially for the cinema lens body. I will gladly pay the extra 1k for the amazing features, i'd be stupid not to. The extra thousand is not a game changer for me and i'm not a wealthy guy by any means. I make money with my equipment(hvx200 for years) and can't wait to step into a more "professional" rank in shooting RED.

Wow. just Wow. i can't believe i read all of that.
look people just chill.
there is no way that adding features and cost at this point is a bad thing. fact is that red is on the bleeding edge when it comes to cameras and even if you decide that you can't afford it, do not want it, cannot wait for it, YOU will benefit from it in the long run.
Red is one of only few camera companies that's looking toward the future currently. they will probably end up dragging the rest of the industry forward kicking and screaming if they have to and if that means some people get upset about it then fine. Seriously do you need to complain if scarlet isn't the camera for you? surely that time is better spent finding the camera that is for you.
wow i'm normally such a lurker but this thread made me ranty.

Welcome :) , and ... well said ...

One of the best reads on the internet…

It is utterly fascinating to me that people say the camera doubled in price sighting the “3k for 3k” slogan that got tossed out soooo long ago. The fact I just typed it made me vurp a bit. After complaining about the price doubling the people then say that a $1000 increase on a nearly $5000 camera has now put it in a new price category? Insanity. In nearly the same breath many then turn around and compare it to other cameras in that same price range, or to cameras that are priced less than half of the original 3k *vurp* quote. All the while people refer to a poll on a user forum like it was going to make or break the decision as opposed to merely help inform it. And then when the owner of the company releases a couple of consecutive posts that both explain where progress is on the project, and where the company is coming from, it all repeats over again.

Yes, REDUSER, you truly are one of the most fascinating reads on the internet.

My guess is that he was referring to the price of a new HVX200 when it was available; which was, I believe, around $6K. But let's not let specifics get in the way of a specious argument.

Ha. That's funny. I am not the least bit embarrassed for having respect for success. More importantly, I have met Jim and have even more respect for the way he is as an individual. And I am not embarrassed to say that either.

@Ash, did you read what I wrote? I'm saying it will be MORE than an HVX, and people shouldn't be pissed about it, you're getting a hell of alot more camera.

Apologies Dane I read that wrong.
It's my understanding that the Scarlet is really in a different price point then the HVX / EX3 models. On another part of the forum a number of at least 12k was thrown out to use a Scarlet.

" Thrown out " just about sums that contribution up though...

That’s what I paid for mine. Amazing to think how far we’ve come and what $6k could be getting us now (or soon anyway)…
