At the speed the big guys are going (slow, but still much faster than they always were) I wouldn't be surprised if the follow-up to the AF100 shoots RAW HD.

The AF100 is already enough indication they know Scarlet is coming and they are preparing.

Seams like they go the opposite direction leaving dvcprohd for a more compressed format.

Frankly, I would be very, very surprised if they do...primarily, they are currently enabling features using technology which they have been withholding for years. RAW output would probably require spending a little money on R&D and a ground-up rebuild, because they can't just keep doing more of what they're already doing.

Canon might be able to pull it together, but they are usually last, not first, to these parties, for good reasons. The hybrid DSLR was driven by the needs of their stills shooters, not the other way around. Their bread and butter remains lens sales, not camera sales.

It would be interesting, in a sci-fi way, if we could have a glimpse into a non-existent past where Jannard retired to his island, instead of starting RED, and see where the evolution of imaging technology would be today. One of the great things about the company is, even if you have never spent one RED cent on their gear, you still get the benefits of real competition and deflationary pricing in the digital cinema realm.

Well Jim, just when I think the Australian dollar is going to give me some price relief on the Scarlet package, you go and follow it up with a price rise ;) . However, the dollar is 20-40% over priced, and when it flips down again, I might not be able to afford the scarlet package.

So call Red with your credit card in hand. They'll be only too happy to keep your money on account. Sling 'em the dough while the Aussie dollar is at parity. It's not going to last and better to buy your Scarlet at 99.xx than at 74 where it belongs.

Jim's smart, but he is in no control over the value of the Aussie dollar.

I can't understand why you would re-post them, knowing a mod deleted them. Seems a tad disrespectul and presumptuous, no?

Are you afraid of footage AF 100? Or maybe Do you think it is not important information about AF 100 and not many people have been waiting for about 2 month for this footage from AF 100 to compare with Scarlet or maybe you from another planet? Are you human? Because most of filmakers are waiting for this footage because RED ONE is too expensive and When we will see Scarlet nobody knows!

AF-100 and Scarlet

Not afraid of that at all, but what would be more appropriate is to say that there is a discussion regarding some early AF-100 footage over at DVXUSER (or other site)

This thread is about Scarlet and HDR.

I am only on the site I love RED and going to buy RED ONE in the nearest 6 month I have no other sites and I have friends only on this site an d I am not agree that we are talking here only about RED or Only Scarlet we are talking about many things and very many things and AF 100, 5D mARK and ather too. So this is my opinion. I just want to know the opinionss about these footage from people form this site if you have account on DVXuser please go there I have only one here!

Are you afraid of footage AF 100?

I fear the long-term ramifications of currency debasement. I fear that my child's public school education will suffer from budget reductions and dwindling resources. I fear the lack of stability world-wide. I fear that my child will inherit several big environmental messes which may be too advanced to be fixed.

But, no, I'm not really afraid of test footage.

Competition has only made RED's next-generation cameras better than I would have ever dreamed when I made my first $1000 refundable deposit on #1008.

Alexey, I appreciate your motive and enthusiasm, I'm just saying that this is a thread on Scarlet and Jim's decision to add HDR hardware to it.

If your intent is to discuss AF-100 footage, that's more appropriate to do that over on DVXUSER where there is already a subsection for AF-100.

If your intent is to compare AF-100 and other camera's Dynamic Range against EPIC / Scarlet, it would be better to start a new thread about that.

Thanks

Another long thread ;)

Well Jim, just when I think the Australian dollar is going to give me some price relief on the Scarlet package, you go and follow it up with a price rise ;) . However, the dollar is 20-40% over priced, and when it flips down again, I might not be able to afford the scarlet package. Recessions are great for release of very affordable quality product.

The low end mass market is now stills oriented, and that is reflected by the ‘expensive‘, sub $1000 Panasonic GH2 that shipped without 60fps FUllHD (do they work for Red or something ;) ) . I understand video camera sales are declining, displaced with video on stills. On the prosumer market I imagine cameras like the GH2 with little holding rigs, will be displacing prosumer cameras up and down the range. I expect this trend to continue. So this leaves a limited market above it, and for specific products with video/film oriented form factor in the prosumer field. This is a very limited production market. However, an equally stills oriented scarlet priced a bit more than the competition (present top end Canon) might raise sales many (many) times, on reputation and quality. In 2008 a sub 8mpixel 2/3rds scarlet was OK in this respect, however in 2011 it is not so good. So, I am hoping that for the $1000 dollars, the low end scarlets will have increased resolution and even a larger sensor, even if 2/3rd lens have to use a lens mount adaptor (and many currently owned 2/3rd lens are made for SD resolution). Otherwise, can we have a lower cost s35 unit that uses the cheaper all in one 2/3rds fixed lens electronics, has auto/manual lens mount adaptors for 2/3rds and 4/3rds lens, and an optional basic 4/3rds full auto wide to zoom lens.? Of course, the HDR stuff easily allows you to put exactly 8mp 16:9 on a 2/3rds sensor, with increased performance over the old design, which is what I hope is happening.

I think we are likely to see 4K professional, DSLR and prosumer cameras from the competition in the near coming years.

I can appreciate that the fall in the US dollar might also be influencing the overseas costs of the scarlet.

I would also like to ask a major question, can't a form of HDR be done for virtually free using the existing pixel bit depth and codec format?

Wow. Jim can you send me one of these http://www.teslamotors.com/roadster/gallery/view/5135 with my fixed scarlet, it is red! And will make a great camera mount. The additional 1000 should cover it right?

Yes, but any case you are talking about material things, school education is real, we have deal with material things in material world and have deal now and you need school education NOW not in 10 years! So we need to choose from now real things and AF 100 is real and Scarlet is not! Of course we can wait forever but time is very influential factor! I don't like picture from AF 100 but we have to understand that everybody like to talk abour real things for their choise!

Adding at 4500+ USD P2 recorder, plus PL mount, plus Zeiss primes will make anything look good. Especially if a beautiful woman is involved, hehehe.
Suddenly that 5K camera is costing over 10K to get those results.
At their site, they admitted that standard 4:3 lenses were too small to attach
focus pulling equipment too, so for them a PL mount and cinema lenses are a necessity.
I don't think they are talking to the typical AF100 user with that review.

I don't have too much problem with Panasonic's choosing AVCHD over DVCProHD. The former is full 1,920 x 1,080 and can record to commodity SD cards rather than the more expensive P2. My problem is that Panasonic effectively hobbled HD-SDI and HDMI by making them only 8-bit. Why? To save a few dollars? They should've been 10-bit or even 12-bit -- HDMI supports 12-bit, although 3G-SDI might be necessary if you wanted to go the SDI route.

Yeah, at the very WORST, if Scarlet never sees the light of day, at least it gave the competition a kick in the pants, and is getting them to release better products. At best, it'll come out soon while the resale value on a 7D is still high ;)

Seriously! That's a worthless review. That's more like a $20k rig. ($5k cam, $4.5k recorder, PL mount, say, 2 $4k lenses = at least $20k.) A $5k camera that shoots better than a DSLR is something to pay attention to, especially cause it costs $5k to get a DSLR into decent shooting shape to begin with. A $20k one, not so much. If you're spending $20k on a camera, seriously, pony up the extra $10k for a Red One and an RPZ. Crazy.

Edit: Wait, that's Ultra Primes, not Compact Primes. Geez, those are like $10k-$20k. You'd have to be retarded to get those and anything less than a Red One when you can get a Red One and RPP and RPZ for less.

That is why I think more better to buy used RED ONE without lenses for 20-24K!

I disagree. Great lenses do not now, nor have they ever been responsible for making great pictures. Unless we are viewing side by side, it's very difficult to discern the difference in lenses.

We all agree, I believe, that the DP is responsible for most of the beauty; by a wide margin, the camera is next in importance, followed by an even wider margin, the lenses.

I might add that one can build a Red for a relatively low price, but a truly professional package, one we might find at a good rental house, far exceeds the cost of the body.

The real merits of the AF100 are considerable; a very good image, good dynamic range, and very, very nice operator convenience features, in a small, light-weight package. Don't underestimate the value of the 4/3 mount; virtually any lens that covers 35MM can be used with very inexpensive adapters. The angle of view conversion is insignificant compared to Red at 16x9 HD, probably in the neighborhood of 1.09.

Even at the new somewhat higher price, the new Scarlet promises to be a great camera; because all cameras require accessories that cost about the same, a somewhat higher price is not a deal-killer.

Personally, I have no use, none, for a fixed-lens camera; need a super wide? Out of luck. Need a long telephoto? Out of luck. Need a really fast lens? Same story.

As for 2/3" sensors, I never want to go back. I don't need long DOF; I don't do underwater or sports. No thank you.

Here's my big question; is the 35MM Scarlet the same size/weight as the Epic? If I have an Epic, why would I need a Scarlet, other than as a B Camera?

Finally, if the Epic is close to the AF100 in terms of size/weight and convenience, why would I keep the AF100? OK, handy B camera; and dirt cheap.

Oh, and my 5D? Back to stills, my friend. And crash & B camera.

We do live in exciting times!

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo
