  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED ONE collectors...

"The camera is arguably one of the most important of all inventions… it is the single tool that has the ability to stop time, record history, generate art, tell stories, and communicate messages that transcend language like nothing else ever conceived." Jim Jannard

It is pretty easy to see why milestone cameras are coveted by collectors passionate about photography.

Jim

The above is surely one of absolute truth of such is the media which allows to freeze a moment in time and relate a message with such a power that no other media posses or should I say no other communication way compares to it, and for this the saying "A picture is worth a Thousand words".

I could not agree more and love such statement.

Wow, all of your camera collections are making me so jealous. I'm only 19 but I have started my own camera collection. They are all functional and I use them quite regularly. My father was an automotive photographer back in the day and was a common sight at major auto racing events back in the 70's and 80's. He is also a film historian and film noir expert so I guess I am the product of his interests.

My collection currently includes my main camera, a 1970's Nikon Ftn in almost perfect condition with the original 50mm f1.4 lens it was sold with. I also have some early Nippon Kogaku lenses that are even earlier than the camera. Also in the collection is a mint Mamiya C330 TLR and a Leica IIIf in good condition. I hope to grow the collection to include some motion cameras and even a low serial # RED One. Great to see that so many people on this forum are also interested in still photography.

Here is my flikr account (all pictures taken with the above cameras): http://www.flickr.com/photos/46271105@N07/

I think Gibby's running a very early GDX Nikon mount for RED on his cam also. There were only 100 made . . . hmmm. I think JBV Media has the first Nikon mount ever, the one in the video.

If anyone wants a one off, red powder coated 7 Jib Compact XL, only non-black unit in about 800 units made since 1992, I can make them an awesome deal . . .

Mr. Jannard, what other hobbies do you have that we should know about? Yes, there should be a documentary about Red, but I want to do a documentary about Jim. It would probably be just as interesting if not more so.

From bike grips to googles to sunglasses to clothing to drag racing to photography to RED. If the dictionary had a picture of the 21st century renaissance man, there would be a picture of Jim.

BTW. Jim is so cool, he posses the only deposit of unobtanium in the world.

NAB 2006 was historical. We took deposits from a couple hundred folks "on a scam". They bet the longshot. They put down $1000 on something uncertain. That was a moment in time that will never be duplicated. Stories make history. History makes historical value.

I remember offering every one of the 1st 25 to give up their place for $5K plus airfare at the 1st RED Day in 2007. No one accepted. What a day! #6-25 are special in the history of RED. When the book gets written, the names of these people will go down as the brave 1st adopters.

Jim

Thanks - I was one of those who turned down the $5000 and an airfare back to Sydney. In March a little film called Miracle Fish will be up for an Oscar - for best short film - made by Luke Doolan - shot on that #22 Red. At some point the expression "priceless" doesn't cut it.

Red #2169... survived world destruction with us, it's family.

I agree, but it is the touching/seeing the material thing that brings the story of the inspiration to life, and thus further inspires.

The physical artifact is what keeps the story alive.

Yes that is true. The camera may have a financial value in someone's collection, but its true value is in the idea of what people believe they can achieve with it, which inspires them to actually go out there and do it.

Getting hold of the camera and using it is the first step :001_cool:

Does doesn't it....

there's some other interesting stuff on the shelf besides cameras.... a 1960's geiger counter, some unopened kodachrome from 1937, some WWII cameras with the bomber insignia painted on the cases, some very early waterhouse lenses.

I have a few pretty neat things I've inherited from my father as well.... he was in the CIA and was involved with the SR71 blackbird from the early 60's until it was mothballed in 1990ish.... I used to raid his tool box in the garage when I was a kid and steal titanium nuts and bolts and put them on my mongoose BMX bike ( I'm guessing 79-80 ).... incidentally, I remember him telling me the SR71 went "digital" in the early 80's, but also have fond memories of him showing me 9" recon film rolls and pointing out Russian Subs. I got into photography around 10 years old because of my Father... he would have been very thrilled to see the RED but passed away 5 years ago.

Since I've rambled here ( 5 shots of espresso this morn,,, sorry ) here's a pic of my father with that baddest camera platform every made! The SR71... miss ya Dad!

That. Is. AWESOME.

I loves me some SR-71/A-12/Oxcart.

My boy and I were just at the Smithsonian Air&Space annex last week and were looking at the one thye have there. Again.

Who remembers the first 35-3? Gold II? Who cares/cared? By the time it actually matters the camera will be way past legendary status. To put things in perspective, you can pick up a Mitchell camera for about 6K or less. How many masterpieces have been shot with those dinosaurs? I love RED but come on... Electronics don't exactly hold their value over time.

That's it.
