  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Dragon Info and Data Sheets

There has been much confusion regarding how Epic Dragon handles anamorphic support. I wanted to update this with a bit of a key to understanding it for those who choose to shoot anamorphic.

Dragon Basic Anamorphic Shooting Notes

Currently Dragon has support for 1.3X and 2X anamorphic modes.

If you're using 2X anamorphic lenses you will likely desire the 4:3 or 5:4 aspect ratios under the 4K resolution. These aspect ratios are not supported at 6K, 5.5K, 5K, or 4.5K. However, do not let that confuse you, you will get what you are after under the 4K resolution mode using these aspect ratios.

For instance, 4K 5:4 equals 3840x3072 and unsqueezed you produce a 7680x3072 image with a 2.50:1 aspect ratio. You will notice that this is using close to the full height of the sensor.

If using 1.3X anamorphic lenses you may want to explore the 3:2 aspect ratios found at 4.5K and lower resolutions, which produce an aspect ratio of 1.95:1.

It's a bit different than the "old way", however this way is now more aspect ratio and resolution width based. Which makes a bit of sense.

Just adding an example image for those shooting anamorphic.

Here's the typical 4K 2X ANA setting using the 5:4 aspect ratio.

Is it possible in the Dragon menu to create a custom recorded aspect ratio? For example it would be useful to me to record 2809 x 3160 (0.89:1 aspect ratio), with 2x anamorphic lenses, to give a final desqueezed output aspect ratio of 1.78:1

Currently not, but it was hinted that we might see in a future firmware update "custom resolution" support.

Fingers crossed. I have my eyes on one particular format that I think would be exceptionally useful for productions that are destined for widescreen and 16x9 with an additional focus on lens coverage.

Phil your first post says there is no Carbon upgrade path... Was true at the time but the option now exists so maybe you should update it...

Hard work to keep track of everything RED and maintain all published info up to date... Thanks again for the amount of time you devote to this...

Another good example of Jim's "Everything subject to change... Count on it"

pinned for reference.

Correct. I was going to update Monday after Easter with Dragon Monochrome info too, but..... Since you asked. Done!

:-) that was quick !
sorry to put the pressure on you on a friday !

Once you start something like this, it is kinda necessary to keep all info as accurate as humanly possible...
While reading it I felt like it *needed* to be updated for all future readers altho it was a detail that may concern very few people.

Guess we suffer the same symptoms : with my apps when there's an update to the sdk or when a bug is found I can't really do anything else than work on an update and release a fix... (Even tho it is NOT my main job, it feels like a duty)

30.7x15.8mm is the sensor size of Dragon and 21.3x17.82mm for Alexa 4:3.so whats the maximum area that can be used with Anamorphic mode on Dragon. There is 2mm difference on shorter side and it wouldnt make much difference than Dragon.then why the people saying 4:3 Alexa has true ana sensor?

There's lots of new SCARLET DRAGON info now available for updating the charts at the top of this thread.

Big update today. I have been working on my next reference guide that's all about Dragon and I'm not 100% done yet, but there's a lot of new Epic and Scarlet Dragons flying about in the wild and there's info people should have and I've been asked for.

I've added more information on ISO and actual ISO patch samples, a bit more on Film Relevance, an updated Format Key featuring Scarlet Dragon info, and a couple of additional graphics explaining a bit more about Dragon as an image capture system.

Here are the 8 new graphics for the 06/10/2014 update. I've also updated a bit of the text reflecting the current status of Epic and Scarlet bodies shipping out.

Red Dragon - What is 6K?

Red Dragon - Multi-Format System

Red Dragon - Format Aspect Ratios

Red Dragon - Film Relevance

Red Dragon - Format Key 2014

I have split up the Format Key into two pages. 6K-4K and 3.5K-2K. There's a good deal of productions now shooting at 4K and up for a 4K finish and they may only need the first page.

Red Dragon - ISO / FLUT Breakdown

Red Dragon - ISO Examples

I have a few more pages to do, but I'm actively on this now and minus making a pretty cover for the whole thing it's nearly done.
