  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED 8K S35

If this can be matched with the MgW, then it will be EXTRAORDINARY FABULOUS!

Maybe, but it depends on how Red defines "Super-35" because they have been prone to calling sizes larger than 24mm-wide with that name.
I think S-35 4 Perf (full apperture) would be really nice at 8k. So that would be about the same width as the current 5k i guess, but significantly higher then the current 6k FF. Is the only way really to qualify what people mean by S-35 is listing how many Perfs?

That would require 50% more processing power than W8K VV since it would have 50% more pixels.
Doable ? -sure. Now?- not so sure. Also not the way Red rolls... I think Red would rather use these 50% more pixels on the sides of the sensor and call it 12K sensor ;-)

Jeff - the real question here is about which "existing cinema" lenses will actually resolve 8K at S35. Most have problems with 4K as it is. So you may still need to get "new" lenses after all in order to get the best out of this. This to me almost looks like a great opportunity for RED to start making lenses again...

Just my 2 yen...

This is all very interesting. I wonder how RPPs might hold up to this higher resolution, given that RED was at least trying to look into its own future. Just a thought.

Smaller pixelpitch?! Meaning weaker OLPF, meaning greater resolving power, meaning BBC's 4K pass?!
Go RED!

Any modern cinema lens resolves that pretty easily. That pixel size translates into about 130/140 lppm. Easy, peasy....:-)

what would be amazing if you could change from 8k to 6k to 4k to 2k and still be using the exact same full frame s35 sensor, no cropping,
but using smaller resolutions to get higher frame rates and lower compression.

Yes, but it also might mean less sensitivity... which is why it's going to be about noise management. The new Sony A7RII, for example, has a lot of pixels but has kept the noise down, so it can be used at fairly high ISO settings (but not as high as the 12MP Sony A7S...)

True - however the Helium is a new sensor, and...maybe even cleaner than Dragon. Notice Jarred's photo shows the camera at 3200 ISO...

My gut tells me that'a a clue...this new sensor performs much better than we'd think....in lowlight...

I am super excited about this. Looking forward to see what the VV gets when the s35 is 8k.

Pixel size on a7s much larger than a7rII. It's what makes the Canon 1DC so nice, 4k is 1.3 crop of full frame.

That's my point, if Red is going to shrink the pixel size to fit 8K into Super-35, then noise management is going to be critical to get higher ISO ratings to be useful. Think of it this way, how many 36MP APS-C sensor still cameras are out there? Because that's the sort of sensor we are talking about.

But then you will not be able to record a RAW signal from the sensor...
in a way that is kinda already what you get with PRORES only recording at 4K / 2K ...

Yeah that sounds logical.

Helium = more light

Guess :
+) Bayer sensor coating of pixels : Higher rejection of out of band colour frequencies = Higher Choma SNR
+) OLPF : Less work to do, less optical loss = Higher Luma SNR
+) Increase in sensitivity of G and B with respect to R = Higher Brightness before R clips = Higher DR
+) If SNR increases by 6dB (over same area) -> could this be the basis a future HFR sensor?
