  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED 8K S35

As much as I want the VV 8K Weapon to land in my hands soon, I'd almost rather have this instead... Just for the consideration of lenses...

Could not agree more.
+1!

Hang on, guys. This is a tease. Meaning that this thing is likely months, possibly a year, away from getting into our hands. I find it funny that there seems to be those that panic right away with almost every new RED announcement. Your 8K VV Weapon, 4.5K Raven, 6K Dragon, 5K Scarlet-W are nowhere near obsolete or out-dated or yesterday's news.

I mean there are STILL R1 productions being made and they look great! Some guys are STILL cranking out amazing and very current work on their 5K Epic MX.

Let's all take a breath and bask in the wonderment that is RED and let our imaginations run wild. Don't panic. Your camera still kick almost everyone else's camera's @$$.

though im thinking this sensor will be much easier to produce then the bigger 8k one, so that might be where red is coming from with all this, maybe something more widely available and sooner :)

My concern is personnel, be that human or robotic. It takes resources to get the parts made and assembled. RED says parts (sensors) is the problem at present. Like what is being speculated, this may take a couple of years to get shipped, much like the last of the 8k VV list may take a couple of years to be shipped even without a competing chip being made.

It may be easier for corporations to multi-task, but it has been shown that humans don't really get more done by so-called multi-tasking. My fear is that the more things RED has going on, allocation priority may shift to take care of a problem with one line of product at the expense of another, i.e., the month of RAVEN... I suspect not only did Scarlet W production suffer, but perhaps 8k VV as well.

And now with 8k Anamorphic, Panavision, the Thirteen series (other unknown projects???) this projected? sensor... RED is becoming very corporate. In the business world this is how you measure success.

Very happy to have seen them grow. Very sad how that relates to me.

I'm more concerned about noise problems, they spent more time than they planned on tacking the noise problems of the 6K Dragon sensor, so hopefully this new sensor, which is even denser, will be better from the get-go in terms of noise issues.

I am delighted with the chip as it is now but it has taken a while getting here....

Also the camera will become diffraction limited (depending on OLPF) as soon as T5.6/T8 with the reduced pixel size.. Now in the real world you may not see it untill T11 but at moment T11 is mostly safe..

Holy shit! Didn't expect to see a glimpse of the next gen sensor that soon. 8k S35 sounds great to me. :)

If this is a new sensor it feels a bit fast in development since most haven't even received their Weapon with a Dragon sensor.

Dragon started shipping in 2013 and was announced much earlier. I would say that DSMC2 is delivering the full potential of the Dragon sensor. Much more than EPIC did.

Other than denser pixels, what will Helium bring that Dragon can't do?

I would assume higher dynamic range. Red seems to average about 2-stops per sensor update. Hopefully this is no different.

but we just got the Weapon upgrade and now there's this upgrade coming so soon.

Nothing has actually been announced and Weapon started shipping a year ago.

I remember when they first announced EPIC and Scarlet at NAB and I had not received the RED ONE yet. I would say that Red has been better at keeping stuff quiet until it is closer to shipping, unlike EPIC and Dragon. :)

This is a very exciting development and it will be very interesting to see how it all materializes.

And to comment on what some are saying...I don't think the R&D that RED is doing is going to slow down the current production lines on existing models. R&D is a small part of a company... it just seems really big because it keeps making the headlines when Jarred let's us peak in the garage to see what their working on! (Which is really big, ha ha)

Jeff - the real question here is about which "existing cinema" lenses will actually resolve 8K at S35. Most have problems with 4K as it is. So you may still need to get "new" lenses after all in order to get the best out of this. This to me almost looks like a great opportunity for RED to start making lenses again...

Just my 2 yen...

8k s35!!!!
Wonder what the resolution on a larger cut of the sensor would be like?

If my math is wrong-which it more then likely will be about: VV would be 13,107x6912 and the sensor size of the 6k CF/Magnesium is 10,977x5789

Very interesting.

Speculation :

+) New post dragon back end architecture
+) >= 120 Hz @ 8K
+) Suitable for Olympic cameras in 2020
+) Higher IR block

AJ

Possibly non-square pixels to make the most of anamorphic squeeze (to get 8K horizontal) while still having large enough pixel area (vertically) to retain at least some ISO 1280 performance.
