  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED 8K S35

Of course. Why would they design a new sensor without factoring in other improvements / benefits?

Also ... "just 8K at s35" is kinda like complaining about slow internet on an airplane.

If this is a new sensor it feels a bit fast in development since most haven't even received their Weapon with a Dragon sensor. Other than denser pixels, what will Helium bring that Dragon can't do? I'm actually more interested in everything other than resolution for the next sensor from Red. And if it has, I'm not sure why it would be a good idea to get the 8K VV if it's possible we get a VV or Dragon 6K sized sensor with more resolution and better specs on top of it. I get that tech is moving fast, but we just got the Weapon upgrade and now there's this upgrade coming so soon. It puts a strain on the ability to stay up to date on the market with our cameras, since there's something new even when we got the latest thing. Yes, now I'm sounding a bit negative, I'm always positive for new development and achievements but this is a bit fast to roll out when everyone is just moving over to Weapon.

As much as I want the VV 8K Weapon to land in my hands soon, I'd almost rather have this instead... Just for the consideration of lenses...

With 8K display hitting the shelves very soon, it's wise for Red to have something cheaper, and more available, than VV.

8K S35 sounds way better than current 6K "bigger than S35, but still not that VV big" :) - when can we order? :D (still, I was just getting used to the unique Dragon 6K sensor size :) )

Doubt it will be cheaper when this new concept hints at VV at a whole other level of resolution. All people who opted for 8K VV might feel that waiting for a true downscaled 8K image from say 12K is far better and more worth the upgrade price. Announcing this, just as the first 8K VV is shipping feels a bit odd.

Let's pump the brakes everyone. Its a teaser. They could be 2+ years from shipping for all we know.

I bet this will be a possible upgrade path for epic

Makes sense, "a small but big way" as Jarred put it

+1.

Brand new sensor! Cool......

I must agree that Helium is a better name than some of my suggestions to Jarred....
And as with all Red sensors the color science is Graeme's! He is an evil genius!

Look, I love innovation, but this comes 24 hours after "we've shipped our first 8k Weapon camera" post. Don't stop innovating, but please execute better. I think the cost of additional manufacturing would pay off in increased sales.

i personally would love the opposite, a large format sensor that shoots full sensor at 4K.
since no production let's me shoot above 4k. the few times i did i got highly reprimanded by the post producers and these were network tv shows.
