  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Official NAB announcements...

Yeah, the last word I would use to describe Ted is "arrogant." From what I witnessed at the RED booth this week, he was always gracious and nice to everyone (including myself).

As for the "surprise" that Sony has a >4K camera -- Sony has 7,000 4K projectors installed around the world. Did anyone think they wouldn't come out with some form of 4K acquisition at some point to provide 4K content for (and justify the cost of) those projectors?

Is the cost not justified by the sale of said projectors? imho the camera is a direct response to RED's 4k aquisition camera and that if they didnt do something soon they are in jeaopardy of losing there position with the cinema-world. Their main proprietor in the industry is Panavision and with the currently less favored Genesis, Panavision is embracing RED like a pedophille at a nursery school.(sorry if that analogy is too strong for some)
I have had the pleasure of meeting Ted a few times and arrogance doesnt seem like one of his personality traits. I would venture to say that the countless epic interviews and repeated benign questions that have him repeating the same answers in unimaginable numbers might have him at the edge of composure.

Ted Arrogant?
If Ted's arrogant Barry Bonds is clean.

Teds like the sweetest dude you can learn from, its a race between him and Michael Cioni.

There is a lot of differences between Sony and RED and one is the presentation of the information on the cameras. RED being open in the past, may of helped their competitors try to catch up. But I, personally would rather listen to Ted answer my questions from his biased enthusiasm than hear a paid actor recite a script. This is just my preference. I like Sony as a company, I'm glad they finally made a commitment to something over 1080p and they do make good products. It only can help drive the market and technology in a forward direction.

\Hi Brian! great first post.

The Lightiron app is AMAZING...and will be available any day in the iTunes store... Michael wasnt sure when because its out of his hands now.. but it should be there any day. I have been checking everyday :)

Thanks for the update Tim,
We were fortunate enough to visit Light Iron at their new Burbank office and demo the LiVE PLAY app a couple months back. Since then we too have anxiously waiting with our iPads, Teradek & RED proxy recording software in hand. It truly is an amazing software package.

New Burbank Office? wowzers those guys are taking over the world!!

They also just took over the old Birns and Sawyer behind the Arclight in Hollywood... Huge space... incredible facility with incredible crew. That is where Devlin and Paxton and myself spent sleepless nights the last 48 hours before NAB doing the DI for our TATTOO film... and the Light Iron crew was right there with us to the end. ( ask them about the LA-Vegas party bus :) )

Just got back from my only day at NAB—it's awesome when there's no crowd! Thanks Red for showing your new stuff, everything looks awesome. I love the 3D movie before the Tattoo movie—and maybe it's just me but it didn't turn all dark like other 3D movies I've watched in the past (I was secretly hoping you guys were going to give those Oakley polarizers for free). And I don't know what people are smoking but Ted is awesome and answered everything I asked—he is a scholar and a gentleman.

p.s I was afraid to shoot the model being tattooed as my wife wouldn't approve of it!!! That and risk looking like a perv. =P

Did anyone else read this and miss the "HOME" qualifier. ... gulp. a HOME 4K laser projector? really? I was at NAB for 3 days and never heard this. RAWSOME news.

Tim,

I noticed the "home" but I think there was an interview with Ted somewhere, where he said something like "it will make its way into the post community..." or words to that effect. It would be nice if this "home" 4K laser projector was as color accurate for RED footage and we are able to do a grade on it too! I guess at worst, its going to be great for dailies viewing, cost effective for sound mixing stages, and of course great to be able to view clients and our own final outputs via REDray using this.

OK, hands up who guessed Red had a projector up their sleeves? :001_cool:

My guess would be similar to Josephs, but soley a 4K projector with or without 3D capabilities / 4K Monitor.

Why? It seems RED has the acquisition all sown up, RED Ray is there for distribution, so in order to get the RED RAY out there in numbers, there would need to be an affordable way to demo, grade, view and show all the great footage that EPIC will be producing.

David - I call bragging rights! :-)

NICE, I love that building. Lived so close to there for a while, miss the Arclight area. Btw it was awesome meeting you Jarred. Good to finally here the "heh heh heh" in person.
Loved the work on the Tattoo -- I don't people who didn't go to the show probably don't know that you guys did the entire thing the week before NAB. Simply amazing.

Glad I went, thanks guys for a great experience -- you made it worth the trip :)

Whoopsies. I believe we speaking of the same facility. Our LA trip is still geographically a bit of a blur. We spent a week and 1/2 training at Techinca with a Quasar in the mornings & spent our afternoons running around in an attempt to demo and acquire as much new equipment as physically possible. Somewhere in the informational download I must've delusionally led myself to believe I was in Burbank.

Good for Michael and team well deserved, their work specks for tit self!!

Never ride the BUs, but I'm sure that Bus ride must have been a fun one to ride... ;)

BTW: I felt really bad leaving NAB on monday evening, especially after you told me that you and Michael were up till 3am the night before
editing footage in which was some of our Epic American Tour material in, and never seen any of my footage in 4K, so look forward to get a little
visit to RED STUDIOS HOLLYWOOD to see it on your BIG screen there... ;)

I dunno if Joseph posted it also, but Monday, we were in the second showing I think, and apparently a handful of guys bailed from the 3D show out the entrance and skipped the Tattoo show - keeping the glasses!!! Jim couldn't believe it. He sure handled it better than I would have.
Great show. Thanks Red.

We have not and will not post the size and specs of the RED Dragon sensor until we are ready to ship. We are no longer interested to telegraph our roadmap to our competitors. I will say that the RED Dragon is significant.

Jim

This suggests to me that Dragon may possibly be larger than existing Mysterium-X sensor.

I wonder about, for example, something like a FF35 sensor but with 'just' 5k resolution, which would, in theory, still be something that the Epic-X brain's could process. Or a FF sensor with higher resolution (6k perhaps, for example) that then compromises the overspeed capabilities... again, theoretically remaining within the Epic-X brain's capabilities. Or even a sensor particularly optimized for anamorphics. Obviously, RED won't tell us (understandably!!), but I think we're being encouraged to realize this new sensor upgrade option for the brain may be even more interesting than a bump in dynamic range.

Even if it is 'just' the same sized/resolution S35 sensor that will still be GREAT -- more dynamic range is always awesome!

But by not posting the size of the sensor it fires the imagination a little. Very cool.
