  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Official NAB announcements...

I have been lurking around on this forum for years now and am kinda embarrassed to only now be posting my 1st reply.

That being said I was curious if anyone at NAB has heard any further news on the availability of Light Iron's Live Play ipad app? We were supposed to be at NAB this year, but unfortunately got bogged down with production work. The last I read Michael was supposed to be Showing it off at yesterday's Final Cut Pro Users Group SuperMeet and this morning at the Hollywood Post Alliance Post Pit. Our company out in China has been dying to get our hands on the app, but can't seem to find any updates online.
\Hi Brian! great first post.

The Lightiron app is AMAZING...and will be available any day in the iTunes store... Michael wasnt sure when because its out of his hands now.. but it should be there any day. I have been checking everyday :)

Ha! Yeah, doctors should add "rage induced by obsession with camera products" as a risk factor for heart disease.

LOL... I bet obsessive tendencies are already mentioned in there somehow. ;)

(...)Philip Bloom is another DSLR guru who is great. Interestingly enough, he has been quoted several times as saying the Epic is his "dream camera" even though all of his current client work is on DSLR/AF100.

Not to nit-pick your words Anthony , but I don't consider that "interesting". He knows quality, understands cameras, and is already shooting with packages in the price range. He is a given Red customer. It is only logical that he be interested in Epic, just as well as everyone in a similar situation, who realizes 4k is inevitable, and already sees the vast difference separating all other cameras from Epic (and film) --even in a 2k world in most cases. He also said some (many?) of the Red fanboys can get a bit cult-like... Philip is a fun host, he has a warm personality, and is a strong communicator --which means much more than normal in this industry. But he isn't some cinematography messiah. Most of us love him dearly, and he's got talent, but we can't hang on his every word. The guy has flaws, just like the rest of humanity. He, like most, is required to focus on pragmatic choices. And he, like most, can't retain the entire picture 100% of the time. It is necessary within this profession to delve deep into detail, and that invariably pulls us away from the big picture. Cut the guy some slack, and don't elevate him too high that he can't fulfill your expectations. As always, I wish him the best, and want him to post more reviews.

The only way to qualify Red for your personal (business) situation, is to do it yourself. Not Philip, Jannard himself, or any ASC can do it for you. You have to do it yourself --with as much information gathered as necessary/possible.

However, I am willing to bet that if you are looking for something between 645 film and an HV30, you will most likely get to the same plan of action: Cut Red some slack, check Recon, and party when your Epic gets here.

4. We are working on a home 4K laser projector.

Jim

Did anyone else read this and miss the "HOME" qualifier. ... gulp. a HOME 4K laser projector? really? I was at NAB for 3 days and never heard this. RAWSOME news.

We are swinging for the fences. Apparently, we are beginning to inspire others to step up their game.

well.. I appreciate the humbleness Jim, but did anyon else raise eyebrows when Arri came out with an Alexa "M" -? ...well I thought Sony was even more (bold, desparate) take your pick to
adopt this "entirely original" new mantra for the future" - Cough cough.

I hope this helps people to understand the necessity for RED to "button up future announcements until shipping" - if they plan on keeping the lead in innovation.

I suppose you missed Sony's caption make.believe... it's a make.believe "original", not something actually original!

To be honest, between Dragon, the 4K Home Projector and RED Ray Pro I cannot decide which is the hugest announcement so I'll take one of each whenever they are ready please :-)

Jim while everyone appreciates (replace with "drools" ) on your every announcement for the future it is totally understandable that you just stop revealing your plans to your competitors.
First rule of self preservation; don't reveal your moves!

As a side-note I was kinda hoping RED would make some announcements about stupid future products at random so as to misdirect everyone who's trying to replicate what RED does. But that's not very "fair play", right?

I for one will be here when the products start coming out. For me, the delay is a minor annoyance... I want, but I don't need. The minor annoyance (to me) is literally nothing compared to the hardships being experienced by the people of Japan.

Anyone who is blase about this year's RED booth or this year's NAB needs to have their head examined...I just spent my one day at NAB, today, Thursday - a lot of it at the RED booth - and the Mission Control app is AMAZING. The whole booth is amazing. I got to play with an EPIC for as long as I wanted. I love the touchscreen technology. REDRay is close to shipping. And meeting all of the great people who work their asses off to make all this happen and seeing the passion and the pride they have in what they are doing - is inspiring.

The whole booth is like jumping in the Delorean and driving forward to the future, flux capacitors blazing....

Waiting has had its challenges, but seeing all these goodies up close and seeing how hard the team is working to pull it together so seamlessly... - well, that makes every moment of waiting all worth it. Nate, Travis, Brent, Rob, and Jon - y'all made my day - thanks.

Going to NAB is like a having a ringside seat to watching miracles happen.

RED has pulled this whole industry so far forward, it's crazy - you can look all over the NAB floor and see how far the influence of RED's mission has spread - it has inflected so many other innovations as well, in sometimes subtle ways.

This is the first time I've actually been here for the Thursday floor session - and I must say, I much prefer it. No crowds, lots of time to chat. And it's a short day, so you get to leave without feeling like you're missing anything, because they kick you out. Thursdays rule.

Just got done with the NAB fun, and dropped in for a sec to see what people are saying and thinking... Without trying to come off in anyway as critical of those chatting here about the many interviews of the past few days that I did... I hope nothing was misconstrued as me knocking on the users of the various gear - I can tell you flat out, I respect all the gear and the people using all the gear - regardless of the tech specs, the price point or the use case... everything has it's place and proper use logic.

In talking mode at a show, speech or presentation, I'm just trying to answer questions as best I can, keep it fun and light, and not come off as trying to sell a bill of goods to anyone - our product quality and sophistication does all the real talking, I'm just the guy that get's to act like a big kid and tell people how much fun it is... and try and keep it all straight when it comes to the various differences in what the products all actually do, in terms of resolution, image quality, and overall ease of use.

If anyone took offense to any of the 1000's of comments coming out of my mouth at NAB... please don't sweat it... at the end of the day, it's all good fun and a real kick to be around the vortex of excitement that our industry lives in...

Enjoy.

Thanks for the post Roberto. I agree with pretty much everything you say ... except I don't regard Phil as a messiah, just good guy who's done some good work -- and probably an even better job of promoting himself and his blog.

The only reason I said it was "interesting" that Epic was his dream camera is that he's known mostly as a DSLR guru and someone who is pushing that movement forward. And sometimes DSLR people are kinda antagonistic toward Red.

But again, I agree with everything you say -- I'm already sold on Red, taking over a Stage 3 ... the Epic is simply a dream come true. Ideally paired with Leicas and Angie's for zoom ;) -- and the dragon upgrade makes it even more of a no brainer (as if it needed to be.)

Also, not sure if you were voicing this toward me ... but no need to tell me to cut Red some slack. I totally understand the situation, and how difficult it is to work the technological miracles they are making reality. On top of that they are just some of the nicest, most well meaning, fun intelligent pros you will ever meet. Like you and others, I'm just stoked to be a part of this and willing to wait as long as it takes for something so dramatically different and powerful.

Hope that clarifies my comments ...

Anthony

Hey Anthony! Yup. Totally with you. I was certainly not directing the cutting-slack bit at you, at all! :)

BTW, in case people are still misreading things today... I bet Phil was laughing when he said that thing about cult-like fanboys. It was most likely him trying to be light and fun. Besides, if anyone is going to be poked at for being fanboys it should be those that are after the best cameras. Right? Keep the stuff coming Bloom. I am looking forward to see your Epic un-boxing video, and all the subsequent chapters that it will take to cover the camera's full capabilities. Anyone know if he put is name down for an Epic already?? I wonder what Stage that is?

Ted I am so so so sorry for not being able to make it to this year's show. I wanted to get to meet you all since 2006... bad timing on my part, maybe next time :-)
I wouldn't sweat it as to what people "think" you mean when you compare something to something else.
Everything is said for the sake of the argument and the point you have to make in the limited time of each interview.

On a side note your interviews are always interesting and leave you wanting for more!

Saw TED on TWiT this morning! Wow, he looked tired! I can't imagine how little sleep he's running on! I also wonder what they were doing at their Booth that could get them shut out... :o

Until its in their download feed, the interview starts at 1:00:40 here: http://www.justin.tv/twit/b/283681131

I'm just watching through some NAB coverage and now I'm hating not being there. Watched more footage of Ted going over some of the functionality of Epic and Scarlet at the booth, that guy must be a machine lol.

As much as it won't be a patch on seeing it in 4K at NAB, I'd still like to see the Tattoo movie, hope we get the chance to watch it here.

I had long given up any idea of buying the Scarlet and was waiting for the Epic-s, may reconsider now having watched the coverage. I think once these are available I might not be able to control the opening of my wallet. Surely you would still get a good resale value on Scarlet by the time Epic-s arrives.

And then there will be that 4K home projector and RedRay.

I hate when I talk myself into these things...

I hadn't even seen this before I posted, like i said in my previous post Ted, you must be some kind of machine. I use DSLR and EX1 to shoot at the minute and found no problems in what you said in the interviews, and I think i've watched about 10 of them now.

The presentation you did for Jarred from Wide Open Camera has switched me back on to the Scarlet, it looks like such an amazing tool in it's current/final form.

Thanks for the work you put in over there. Very much appreciated.

OK, hands up who guessed Red had a projector up their sleeves? :001_cool:

From memory there was quite a bit of lobbying here on the forum to get RED to release a sub-$10K projector some years ago now. Frankly, I'm surprised it took them this long to announce it. I'm sure they, like most of us, would have thought that they would've been available long before now. I guess it's a similar situation to the RED mattebox. Not enough competition, so they have jump in and do it themselves! At least we are now guaranteed that there will be a lot more 4K projectors announced this year! ;)

Yeah, the last word I would use to describe Ted is "arrogant." From what I witnessed at the RED booth this week, he was always gracious and nice to everyone (including myself).

As for the "surprise" that Sony has a >4K camera -- Sony has 7,000 4K projectors installed around the world. Did anyone think they wouldn't come out with some form of 4K acquisition at some point to provide 4K content for (and justify the cost of) those projectors?

Red Ray and Mini Red Ray and Home Projector! This is good stuff! 4K playback without crazy data rates and great image quality. Fantastic Stuff. Really. I estimate at least 5 years before the rest of the industry realize that RED's biggest innovation so far is their solution to dealing with the data. It is a huge part of the equation that all other manufacturers tend to just purchase from other people.

How about RED works out a deal with Apple and some movie studios to release 4K movies for the home through an iTunes style system? Download to Red Ray at home, polish your eyeballs, and enjoy? Or maybe, talk to the guys at Valve about Steam and look into a brand new content delivery system.
