I haven't edited a RED project in a few months, but when I did I would always get smooth playback of 2k proxies on my mac pro using quicktime.

Now, I can't seem to get a smooth 24fps playback of the _H proxy. Why is this? I'm on a mac pro quad 2.66 with an ati3870 and 11gb of ram. My hardware hasn't changed.

What version of Quicktime are you running? I'm fine with 7.5.6 here.

Jerry

Might not be that 7.6 is a no no, I just searched this forum on it, and didn't find any bad reports.

What sort of drive are you playing files back from?

Jerry

Good question.... The original files are on an E-Sata drive, so we moved one file to my main drive (sata) to check playback and the same choppy playback issue occurred, so then I moved the file to my RAID and still had the same problem.

I should amend my report on the search... there were problems, but not like this one.

Computers are a love/hate thing.

See if the copy is bad. I've seen so many wierd things over the years with that. Try another copy of file from the original directly to that raid. Might be something there (I'm fishin').

Also! is playback bad from the original? I'm playing back from a similar drive. esata dual raid 0.

same thing, have to bring it into the timeline and render it... then it plays perfectly. So weird... editing 2k was so simple before. This shoot did use the newer build than what I edited before though.

mmmm. I don't have anything from the latest build don't think.

might be something there... dunno.

I've not heard any real reason to upgrade to QT 7.6 so I never did it, but I suspect something there. Am having to render to see full res here, but playback is pretty smooth. Might change your playback settings in FCP to help there. They are in the RT pop up menu in the timeline window. Try setting your playback quality down, but frame rate keep up.

Hey,

I'm having the same problems. Having to render all transferred footage in Final Cut, where as a couple of months ago it didn't need to be.

Don't think it's a build problem, as I've stayed on 17 since it was released and only noticed this problem recently.

Be interested to hear of any solutions...

Piers

Seems there have been changes in the proxy reactions in FCP since a little while... Now you have to use the _M proxies to have a smooth edit in FCP... Dunno why, but it's all over the forum...

Better yet, I've changed my edit prefs, now I log and transfer and cut in 2K... Works like a charm and REAL smooth! Just need to take the afternoon off while it logs and transfers, but it's pretty quick compared to Redcine... Like 1hr for 50Gb...

Yeah, that's what I've always done, but now I have to render the transferred footage once I bring it into a timeline.

Would it have anything to do with the RedCode settings in the system preferences? Or the log and transfer settings ?

Narrowing it down, It would seem that the problem started after the new Red Quicktime Codec was released a couple of weeks ago...

Mmmh... I never touched the L&T settings, but I don't remember having to render when importing via L&T... It's pretty much 2K rendered files I deal with... Isn't this why L&T takes more time than editing with the proxies directly? Not having to render once the rushes are transfered?

I'm always pretty updated with all the most recent Red stuff as soon as it's released, and I'm definitely certain I didn't have to render. I did start cutting with the _M proxies first as the _P didn't play smoothly... There was something about them being "orange" in the timeline I recall... Try the _M or even the _H and see what happens... I'm pretty sure some won't have to be rendered, but trust me, go the L&T way (I can't help you with the settings, but I didn't touch mine, so...), have a coffe or a nice sunday walk, and you'll be cutting tonight... :)

I am having the same problem on my MacBook Pro. Hardware is: 2.4 Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, 9400M and 9600M GT Graphics.

I have worked on older model MBP's and they played 2K proxies fine. I just discovered that you need to make a manual change so that the laptop uses the more powerful graphics card. I did that, thinking it would solve those low framerates, it did not.

So, basically I am having the same problem as Josh. I am running QT 7.6.0.

Its just confusing when it can not play that correctly, but it will play a 2K AppleProRes file, with a higher data rate, just fine.

I still have my same MBP as before when the proxies worked, so I'm not sure it's a new VS old model issue... Now they won't play anymore but used to...

Yep, pretty strange...

dang, so no suggestions/solutions/reasons...? anybody?
