  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- RED ROCKET-X

this thing is pricey

if it lasts longer than the original RR 3000hrs + then it maybe worth it.

I just feel very little people are gonna have these from the get go.

Standard BOX kit for DIT on a union show is $500/day would you charge more with a new Rocket?

You'd need a 14 day shoot to pay it off.

There needs to be a non-union RR lol

For all the indi-Folks

new RR card for $5700, plus a Proxy Module to record on camera to (ProRes Proxy, MXF for Avid, H264) and that is only $2500, it seems to me from a post perspective that its more cost efficient to shoot Proxy files on camera for offline editing and leave the Red Rocket purchases to Post Houses to color and online hi-res

but

1) I know most camera people want to keep the camera clean as possible, would they want an extra piece of equipment Proxy Module on it?
2) Producers don't understand the technology so they wont know how to make that decision
3) Red has fallen out of favor too much?? I love Red, but most of my jobs have been other cameras this past year

Working in mostly features, and some commercials, yes union, but low budget, I've barely paid for my RR over the last 2 years, Producers nickel and dimming for transcode fees because they dont understand the technology costs

Just noticed in the tech specs the RR-X requires a 6pin power connection from the motherboard... means my MAC PRO with GTX 680 4GB already using both connectors cannot drive that card without an external power supply...
Our rocket is still working great so I will not replace it but might be worth checking your config if you plan on getting one...

Hopefully hypothetical future mac pros will have a stronger PSU...

The June-coming Mac Pro will have Thunderbolt. If You are investing into this card - your best bet is external TB enclosure. This way you can share the card between Mac Pro / iMac in the office / home and a laptop on a location.
Single lane TB enclosures are only few hundred bucks...

Really looking forward to this one! Can the Display-ports be used for monitoring in 3. party applications, such as DaVinci Resolve?

Curious to know if its x8 or x16 electrical. The specs say x16 mechanical but no mention of elec.

also wanna chime in on the really obvious old Rocket failing / breaking on so many users. Me and everyone else i know of have had at least 1-2 failing and dead rockets. 3000 $ for replacement. bang. no warranty.

come on guys, no one can tell me that this is not a major design issue and not fair to the User / Costumer

would it not be fair to at least have a trade in for these failed / broken rockets for a new rocket x ?

Wow this is quite a suprise... thought it was going to cost me a leg and an arm.
You've done it again Red!

This is my biggest concern in chaining myself to RED's workflow.

You would be surprised Rick.. Trust me I agree with you but Mr. Moore seemed to overlook this one. The current Rocket is the one product that hasn't gotten a whole lot cheaper to make like everything else. We have been very transparent in passing reductions in costs to you guys... and for whatever reason these cards cost us very close to what they did 5 years ago. Seriously.

Then maybe it's time to re-think and re-implement. By now it must be possible to get RR performance with cheap(ish) commodity GPU hardware and cleaver software. So, replace original RR with software implementation for less demanding users, with RR-X hardware for the high end?

Some logic in that? Surprised we haven't already seen 3rd party RR-compatible sw/hw solutions.

yup.. 3 year RED ARMOR is $395.

This is good news. Very good news. And overall, some sweet strategic moves by RED. Cool. Which makes me believe we'll see more strategic moves on the post front too.

Is this true? RR X Cards won't work on older Mac Pros with a large GFX card? This is a power issue? Not enough for go round?

We ship with a power splitter for Mac Pro

Rocket-X will come standard with 2 year warranty. 1 year extra red armor warranty available

Physical & electrical x16

Single slot card

Hi Mike
From what I have read the problem with Debayering is the wavelet mathematic. The problem is that the GPUs are apparently not fast at working with wavelets. Probably because games do not need them. That could be one of the reasons that they are not used.
However I do agree that it's a limiting factor with our fantastic red footage that you can only smile and work with it if you have a Rocket (X). Even though I may be able to afford it for example the people I work with may not be able to afford it.
Still I'm really happy about the new card! Great job!
/Andreas
