Rob, will the new ROCKET-X work in the 2008 8-core Mac Pros? I too have a Graphics card that takes both power connectors (GTX-285 I think) — Wondering how to go about running ROCKET. Or I guess I could put it in an ESATA enclosure, if such a thing exists, correct?

2) Do you have an idea of of the max Data read / Data write of this card?

3) Would putting this in an external 10Gb/s (or 20Gb/s) TB system throttle the card performance?

4) Does this card have any generic (eg Open-GL or CUDA) GPU functionality that can be harnessed (eg for PP or AE use) ?

The old Rocket is baseline and Rocket X is 5 times faster than that. I haven't seen it broken down into viewing or transcoding gains.

Thats how they are showing it here at NAB. -

The build quality does look much better!

Also as it stands now, the new rocket will not work in mLink's RED chassie, or Sonnet's early Echo Express Pro before they added the auxiliary power support in 2/13.

Just be aware. Looking into an external power option cable to save people from having to upgrade their PCI boxes. Will keep you updated.


BUT I was told by RED guys here that the normal rocket will definitely still handle Dragon footage, and thats it's not "going anywhere". It will just be much slower than the new card. So the current card will still be viable, just not if you are in a hurry.

Ok I'm gonna ask this again. Isn't the big question ... Will the new rocket be faster than the old one when used in a thunderbolt enclosure??? As far as I understand it, the current card is somewhat limited by the thunderbolt connection. If this is the case, will a faster card make any difference if you use it in a thunderbolt enclosure? This is the only way I plan on using a red rocket in the foreseeable future.

This may seem like a stupid question but how do I know which version of the echo express pro I have? Was there a version that did not need to be plugged in to AC? What is meant by "has the auxiliary power."

All of them have traditional wall AC power, but their newer version added additional power for cards inside:
