  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- RED ROCKET-X

This question will sound trollish, but I assure you it's not:

Could someone explain to me why you might go with a Redrocket X for processing footage vs. let's say a new laptop with Adobes Creative Suite, a Mercury Playback enabled Nvidia GPU, maybe fast external storage?

There are other scenarios, but the example I give pits a $6,750 card against a much less expensive option that you can use for many other things.

I think at the heart of this I am trying to understand people who feel a card like this is absolutely necessary when I have been doing drag and drop realtime edits with the original R3D's and having fairly quick render times. Is it just for creating dailies absolutely as fast as possible? That might make sense for a larger budget, time sensitive production.

I'd say it depends on turn around times. On set DITs doing say, stereo, for say...multicam...have different needs than me shooting my hypothetical cat on a saturday afternoon. as much as i'd like to think the cat has legitimacy, in this example it surely would take the on set dit less time to encode deliverables for the cats client, than for say some big shot in LA who needs to be off the set then with dailies to go home to enjoy the stereo color graded footy. I can see examples where having more horse power can be a factor. PS not everyone is smart enough to embrace the adobe workflow. Different apps for different productions. Some people need transcodes done quick, and can't use pix240 like on board recorders cuz they only shoot off speed...etc

Thanks! That helps a lot (partly cause you called me smart, lol). I can TOTALLY see this being useful in 3D production where you want to churn a lot of footage.

why doesn't armor kick in after card warranty expires? that means were paying 395.00 for one year?

It does, unless I don't understand your question. You get 2 years standard. If you want an additional year of warranty (so 3 years total) you can purchase RED ARMOR for the Rocket-X
 
For the Thunderbolt questions: yes, the new board will still makes things go faster because most people output 1080p and the scaling happens on the board. So there is more bandwidth available. Now obviously there will be cases where you are going to be limited by Thunderbolt, where it would make sense to put it in a tower.

Intel did announce a doubling in Thunderbolt performance for next year, so hopefully that will get adopted quickly.
 
Do we have to pay in full when we order to get in line for this?
 
so red armor runs concurrently. if it kicked in after the standard warranty period that would be an additional three years.
so really I am paying 395.00 for one year of coverage

Sometimes we work with production companies or post companies that have 15 Avid bays. It's kind of hard to tell them to use Premiere, much less upgrade to a new version of their software. Even an upgrade can be costly in terms of the license and manpower/time to execute it on that scale. People want mxfs or prores to start cutting quickly on these systems.

I work in both ROCKET and non ROCKET worlds.
Trust me there are many more moons to have the ROCKET in your workflow.
I have systems with multiple GPUs and it still makes good business sense to have one or more ROCKETS in same system.

Dont forget, a lot of these cards are used for Transcoding as well in a DIT level.

Yes. You can already do that with the current Rocket.
