  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB13- RED MOTION MOUNT

The interesting and rather cool thing about this is that you can activate and deactivate global shutter, strobe/flicker safe mode, and of course ND filtration.

I assume Global shutter and ND can both work at the same time.

Might this also mean we a have a proper stills mode and maybe flash sync.

Apologies if this has been brought up before.

Yes, at the same time.

Global shutter is also nice since you can shoot landscapes and stills at a fast shutter and then stabilize it in post (Adding a little post motion blur where needed). That opens you up to not having to carry a tripod 100% of the time but still get usable footage.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but it should be possible to eliminate any skew entirely by delaying reading the sensor data until the shutter is closed (just like a real film camera). We already know the sensor has a fast read out (used during high frame rates), you just need to delay it a bit...

Yes I believe it does do this. It definitely has a different aesthetic. From what I've been told, some like the look, others don't.

Jarred, are these Ti only? Or will there be a "cheaper" Al version as well for Canon/Nikon? Guessing this would come in around $2.5-3K.

Patrick, after using AL Mount and Ti Mount I must say that the AL mounts are really not that reliable. I wish I had a Ti mount on my Canon lenses as well as with PL.

At NAB at least, the plan was for Ti only but things can change. Also, Canon and PL only, unless there is demand for Nikon too.

Thanks Andreas & Bob. At that price point I must say that it doesn't really make a hell lot of a difference... ;)

Andreas, what did you experience? Care to share? So far my Al is holding up really well. But I'm not hanging anything heavier than my 70-200 from the mount anyway at the moment.

I can't wait to buy the PL version. I am hoping this plus the new fan will make it a hotter rental item!

This is an official request to expedite the Canon version so that it can ship at the same time as Dragon. Thanks guys. I know you are all doing your best.

Request taken but its not gonna happen :)

regardless of when it would be avail, would you guys consider a dumb canon Motion Mount? I use manual Leica glass w my Canon Mount. would love to use it with Motion Mount.

just a thought since I have no idea of the engineering so may not be reasonable.

I apologize for the newbie question, but it appears that 8x is the equivalent of .9 or 3 stops. Mark Toia on his shoot with Dragon said his VND was at a full 7 stops.

So if I'm understanding correctly, if you have the Motion Mount installed, it is automatically a loss of 1.3 stops. So is the range 1.3 - 3 stops total? Is this correct?
OR is the 8x IN ADDITION to the 1.3 loss of light caused by the glass itself, thus resulting in a range of 1.3 stops to 4 stops?

I barely know what I'm talking about here but I really want to understand. Thanks.

It's been about 4 months since NAB 2013 and I don't know if there's been more actual information on the Motion Mount officially since then, but here's an excerpt from my NAB Journal thread:

By itself it straight away dims the sensitivity 1 to 1.5 stops when the Motion Mount is in Clean mode. They are still fine tuning that bit. It provides a 10 stop range overall with the ability to dial in the amount ND you would like as well.

So in DP-speak, a 0.3-ish ND through an ND 3.0.
