Yikes. Saw it yesterday and was resoundingly disappointed. The first act was completely overly sentimentalized with repetitive references to the "hero's intention" and destiny. The second act was a plotless mess of montages and finally the third act was a mushy fx extravaganza that felt utterly weightless and strangely unrepentant.

According to this pic, Superman is a mass-murderer. His actions were directly responsible for thousands of lives. He tore through buildings like butter fighting Zod & his goons with little concern for Metropolis' population. I couldn't help but wonder - dude why not lead them to the middle of an ocean or a desert or even the moon.

Hated the camera work. Obnoxiously handheld and WTF with all the snap zooms "LOOK MA my camera has a zoom on it! See what happens when I turn this ring? Here let me do it again!!! Awesome! WEEEEE!"

F*CK this movie.

Oh and the Head Nods. Can we please put a moratorium on that? I don't need to see two characters give each-other that head nod when they want to say "Let's go get these mickey freakies!"

And while we are at it... can we put a temporary hold on adapting any superhero comic books into dramatic features for the next 5 years? We suffer mass exhaustion of the onslaught and need to breathe for a little :)

QFT. Indeed, how about something new? All superheroes were new at one point.

I still don't know who thinks Superman is a great idea for a film. Of all the Super Heroes, the one that is practically invincible and has every single super power in comic book rules, who, well, is afraid of a rock, how can an audience relate to that?

Bullshit is my Kryptonite.

Man, I was really disappointed. And this "desaturated, cold" look just adds to the grimness. I'm all for honest handheld photography for certain kinds of project, but the jerkycam thing does not work for me in a 2-1/2 hour action picture. That plus the snap-zooms gave me whiplash for a lot of the picture.

This is one film where I think the vast number of critics got it right. A lot of them call it "joyless," and I kinda agree with that. Not a fun movie at all -- but you kinda expect that from Zack Snyder and Chris Nolan, who are not known for making fun films. I think there's a way to make a serious, adult superhero movie, but this was just way too downbeat for me.

Ratings for movies related to things important in my adolescence, best to worst:

1. Speed Racer
2. Man of Steel
3. Transformers
4. Fantastic Four
5. Thor

I wonder if there were fewer on the nose Christ references in MoS, people would have less of a visceral negative reaction to the movie. That and cut out 30 minutes.

BOX OFFICE REPORT: 'Man of Steel' Nabs $125.1 Million for No. 1 June Opening of All Time
Man of Steel's weekend take in North America was $113.1 million, the top opening for June. Combined with $12 million from special Walmart screenings Thursday night, the film's domestic total through Sunday was $125.1 million.
As a way of comparison internationally, Man of Steel is pacing nearly 40 percent ahead of Nolan's sequel The Dark Knight, which ultimately earned $470 million overseas. It opened to a $17.1 million in the U.K., one of the best showings for a superhero film and almost on par with Iron Man 3 earlier this summer.
Man of Steel debuted to $9.9 million in South Korea and $9.8 million in Mexico. The film makes a major push next weekend when opening in another 26 markets, including a raft of major European markets.

Without the acting firepower of Russell Crowe, Amy Adams, Kevin Costner and Diane Lane to keep afloat this sorry script, the movie would have been unwatchable.

That said, the product placements for Nikon, Nokia, Sears and 7-Eleven, the heavy handed religious imagry and American patriotism, made this movie watch like a corporate sponsored Tea Party propganda film.

heavy handed religious imagry and American patriotism

I beg your pardon, but haven't those things always been an integral part of the character and his particular franchise? Superman is a product of a time when Americans were proud of their country's achievements. He has always been a reflection of America or the self image of the country and her citizens in the time in which it was written. If today's man of steel is going through some dark times, I propose there is a reason for that.

Modern American self-hatred... There's your kryptonite.

I've seen all the other Superman movies and watched the TV show when growing up. I can't recall so may curcifixtion poses. Nor do I beleive there were scenes with a priest counseling Superman or stained glass images of Jesus in frame.

And it IS ironic, being that Superman was created by two Jewish artists: Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, who have said they created Superman as a Jewish hero/alter ego for boys who were like themselves when growing up. And Superman's name, "Kal-El," is Hebrew for vessel or voice of G_d.

I loved the movie!!! Really thought it was better than watchman

I thought it was great. Not "Dark Knight" great, but still a very fun movie to watch. I certainly thought my 2.5 hours watching it was well spent.

I'd love to see anyone on this forum make a better Superman movie. The only one capable would probably be Bryan Singer, he posted here once. Oh wait, he already did. That went well...

So many arm-chair quarterbacks here! Relax guys... It's a movie.

I thought it was good, it certainly had some plot holes and personally I'd have made a few different choices, bit I was stoked to see "Man of Steel the prequel to Prometheus" ... I mean look at those devastated Kryptonian colonies! Obviously someone had been there before ... achem predators anyone?
