LEICA R on RED: Pictures

Thanks for sharing those Dominik. Quite moving to say the least.

Depending on a budget (about $ 7500) / a first feature film project / Red Dragon ... Originally I thought direct me to a set of Zeiss Contax.
Then I belatedly discovered the Leica R (Summicron & Elmarit) ... but I also think of the Zeiss ZF.2 ...
It appears that the Leica R does not completely cover the FF ... Otherwise, what comparison can be done with the Zeiss?
(image texture, chromatic aberration ...)
The acquisition of old lenses is always delicate, long, hoping to fall on reliable owner, passionate about the proper care of his set ...
With ZF.2, we can have a new set for less than $ 7,000 ...
Of course I always heard positive reviews about Leica lenses, but for film, for a Red camera for a cinematic rendering, what you can lose, what that one can win? ...

Thank you for your comments, your experiences, your advice!

Not sure what you mean about Leica R's and coverage. They are designed to cover 24x26 FF - 8k. 6k Dragon format is less that that and not a stretch.

It's hard to generalize between all Leica R's and All Zeiss Contax, both are good. I feel that the R's are a little prettier and the Zeiss Contax are a bit more technical. There are R's like the 60mm and 100mm APO that are quite technical. Both are essentially have a bit of a vintage look if you were to compare to the best primes from Nikon or the Zeiss Otus or Sigma Art ( my opinion of Sigma has vastly changed in the last few years )

I think we shot some tests that try to compare them ... http://www.reduser.net/forum/showth...h-Breathing-amp-Flare-and-Part-5-Impressions)

- Would you suggest replacing the 35, 50, and 85 with the faster 1.4s? Is there a big difference in sharpness? The "super speed" factor doesn't bother me too much as I don't really like shooting below f2, so it's mainly a question of sharpness.

It was my understanding that the 'Cron's are the sharpest and that the 'Lux lenses trade the extra stop in speed for overall sharpness at the extremes of the lens. But Mark is obvs more experienced, so I'd defer to his statement.

- Are there any other recommendations other than Duclos to get these converted? Again, I'm after uniform front, de-clicked iris, focus gears.
There's a place called RP Lens that also does a similar mount conversion/de-click/focus ring process to Duclos. They claim to have done it longer. I haven't sent mine in yet but Peter responded to my email immediately. That said, if you just want a uniform front, then all you need is a step-up ring. And there are other options for getting focus rings as well such as this place that does them in anodized aluminum, and this guy who 3d prints them in plastic.

- Is eBay a reliable source to buy these lenses from internationally? Any other places you'd recommend?
KEH.com (which also runs an eBay store) is one of the largest dealers of used glass. B&H and Adorama also have used departments. Bought one of mine at Adorama, one on eBay (Duclos-modded), and another on Craigslist so being patient is a big part if you're big on serial numbers and such. Working on the last two as we speak.

Does anyone know if RPlens builds a custom step up for the 19mm V2.

i asked duclos but did not get a response.

UC Davis

UC Davis

I had a few hours to spend wandering the UC Davis campus yesterday. I like looking at the assorted bicycles that are parked around campus. Usually there are a lot of very sad-looking, abandoned bikes on this very bike-friendly campus. It seems though that the school is starting to crack down on abandoned bikes as there were fewer than usual. I had the almighty 35 Lux on my camera and took a few shots.

Most of the bikes were in much better shape of course.

There were also quite a few spring flowers out. In general this is a very scenic campus to visit and on a Sunday it is very quiet.

Does anyone have some cinematic examples of Leica R imagery? The majority of pics here look like they were made with a Canon 5D Mark III and intended to look as stills.

Maybe someone has some actual screengrabs from a short or a feature shot with Rs?
