  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

LEICA R on RED: Pictures

Naim, Raafi, Dominik, Med, thanks a lot guys!

Shot this the other day on a 5D with my 35mm 'Cron. Getting focus rings 3d printed now, can't wait to try these on an actual production.

Nice capture on your Cron Raafi!

The 35mm is one of many sweet spots in the Leica R line-up. A few people have asked recently which is sharper between the 35 Cron & Summilux.
I shot a few tests comparing multiple copies of each and posted some examples of both at f2 on here over a year ago.
When both were wide open (f2 / f1.4) the Summicron may have had a slight edge, wheres closing down the Summilux to F2 was sharper (and resolved more details) than the Cron wide-open.

But sharpness is only part of the equation. Resolution is equally important and from experience and informal tests the Summilux seems to have an edge, though both are fantastic options and out-resolve the Dragon sensor in most cases.

Nice Raafi! I miss NYC, I was there in February....

I got my rings also printed... we are still refining the tolerances. (Still not perfect fit) But they work...

Yeah, I've read a few conflicting reports on the 3d option. Measured my lenses with calipers to get as accurate as possible. I've read that putting the focus rings in boiling water softens the plastic enough so that you can put them on better (and it cools to a perfect fit). But it all sounds a little hokey to me, especially since the Leicas are engineered so perfectly.

Yes indeed... I see it as a temp solution (yet workable). I just got my leicas and if I have a select set I like and keep, i'll send them in to TLS / Duclos. To get some proper rings on them. They deserve it ;)

If the printed rings are a bit snug a hairdryer works well. I printed all my Nikon and lieca r rings and the work great.

Wow Ben, real life Game of Thrones! :)
I see a lot of difference between sharpness.. is that the lens, you or post?

@Dominik - Sexy as usual!

Re sharpness, with the 19mm it's all on me. I had brought the wrong size Lee filter adapter and so when using them was getting extreme porthole vignette and so had to crop in quite a bit. Plus conditions were appalling with rain/hail/winds making it hard to shoot for a bunch of shots.

The lens itself is plenty sharp :)

The 50mm does seem to bloom a bit wide open. Is that normal?

Couple frame grabs from the 100 apo macro + Dragon at 6k on a shoot last weekend

Thanks guys!!

New tele-macros come out every year yet the 100 apo still holds its own...and then some!
