  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

LEICA R on RED: Pictures

@Lakis:you have some shots from that OLPF on other leicas? (Wider frame). Love that look, what you said, the face looks like wax or something.
@Dominik: You killin' it Dom! (For people who like this model goodness should check Dominik's Facebook, there are some more frequent updates)

I think someone was asking about the 19mm V2

David, in the second picture... is that vignetting in the sky or is that me just hating because I want this lens so bad :) :)

It might be the grad, but I am pretty sure it's in the sky. :)

i love this lens!

David, did you shoot the V1 and V2?
I know Mark already commented on this that his experience was that the V2 was much better.
But like to know some input. How much of a difference this would be.
I know hard questions to answer.
Maybe a cost vs sharpness ratio :)
A good V1 32xx is doable... but the V2 prices are getting a bit steep...

Don't get me wrong, I think the 19 v1 is great in its own right too. The performance gap is more apparent wide open but stopped down I could easily mistake one for the other.

If I can find the time I'll shoot some tests comparing the two both wide open and stopped down a bit and post the results.

My second Leica R and still an all-time favorite

I'm torn between making a new post or just commenting in here, though I think a lot of you guys subscribed/checking this thread often will have the answers I'm after. I've been lurking on this lens thread for a few years now, waiting for the "perfect" set of lenses for the "right price" to come out, though I'm not sure that day will ever come. Out of everything I've lread, I think Leica-R tick most of the boxes for me. I was hoping you Leica-R users could clarify a few things for me. Here's what I'm after.

- Very sharp set of prime lenses, covering from approx. 19 through to 100.
- Manual aperture
- Smooth/long focus throw
- Uniform fronts for a clip on Mattebox
- Cover 6K Dragon, potentially 8K VV

Here are the lenses I'm looking at:
- Leica Elmarit-R 19mm f2.8
- Leica Elmarit-R 24mm f2.8
- Leica Summicron-R 35mm f2.0
- Leica Summicron-R 50mm f2.0
- Leica Summicron-R 90mm f2.0
- Leica Elmarit-R 100mm f2.8 Macro

Here are my questions:
- Would you suggest replacing the 35, 50, and 85 with the faster 1.4s? Is there a big difference in sharpness? The "super speed" factor doesn't bother me too much as I don't really like shooting below f2, so it's mainly a question of sharpness.
- Are there any ways to get these on a PL mount?
- Are there any other recommendations other than Duclos to get these converted? Again, I'm after uniform front, de-clicked iris, focus gears.
- What are your thoughts on the 80mm Summilux vs the 90mm Summicron?
- Could these support the weight of the RED mattebox clipped on?
- Is eBay a reliable source to buy these lenses from internationally? Any other places you'd recommend?

Aside from this, any other "versions" of the lenses listed above would be helpful. I really appreciate any time you put towards my very many questions. Out of all the information in this board I think I've narrowed that set down, though the information is quite scattered so I'd appreciate any more info. I've tried to track down a set here in Melbourne, though I can't seem to find any to test on. If anyone knows of any, please point me in that direction.

Thanks all

Josef, here's my .02.

I've found both the Summicrons and Summiluxes to be quite sharp. The Luxes seem to be a notch sharper until around F4, where the difference becomes marginal.

As far as I know that requires rehousing.

True Lens Services (TLS) out of the UK is another good option.

- What are your thoughts on the 80mm Summilux vs the 90mm Summicron?
Both are very nice and considered two of the best portrait lenses. The Summilux is sharper until around f4.

- Could these support the weight of the RED mattebox clipped on?
Probably not a great idea.

- Is eBay a reliable source to buy these lenses from internationally? Any other places you'd recommend?
Ebay is a crap shoot. Leica dealers or experienced Redusers are probably a better bet. Often even 'Mint' lenses need servicing to make good cine-lenses in my experience. For instance the grease tends to dry up over 20+ years of sitting.

does anyone knows if this can be adapted to Canon EF or Leica R or M mount and who/how can it be done?
Thanks.

Stumbled across another one of these lenses and did some quick research and found they can be converted, and others have done so.
The focus is fixed (at about 7 feet) along with the aperture (.75) but the results are certainly interesting though it doesn't cover full frame.

Here's a short article featuring another X-ray lens converted to M mount: http://www.japancamerahunter.com/2014/03/think-lens-fast/

And here's a page with some example picts: http://www.oldlens.com/delftrayxar50f075.html The DOF is crazy shallow as you'd expect
