Does anyone have any suggestions for Mattebox brands for Scarlet Red Zooms and Primes. I want to make sure the lens filters will work for the size of the lens. I measured the front of my Red Pro 18-85 mm lens and I believe a 4 X 5.6 filter will work but I am not 100% sure. Has anyone had any experience with using this size of filter and were you able to do so without seeing the edge of the filter in the shot? I will be working with graduated filters as well and I will need some room to move the grad's position on the horizon.

I am currently looking at Redrock's mattebox which supports 4 X 5.6 filters. Any suggestions?

Check out the O Connor Mattebox.

I've owned a Redrock they are all alright, sort of. The Box is huge & deep so you can't slide 15mm rails under it, hence your always tied to the front of the rods with position of camera & FF. Also because of its size you will have problems with modest Wide angle lenses. For similar dollars O Connor "O box" is by far a better deal & also modular offering different mount styles. I think the only problem is no swing away?

Currently I'm using a Shoot 35 MB which is really great & flexible. If & when I upgrade it would be to a O Connor. Checkout Phil Hollands thread on "SKULLY" for his thoughts on the "O Box".

There are already a couple of threads about matteboxes... do a quick search/scan of the DSMC Accessories section of the forum...

The Redrock mattebox is not something I would recommend... you'll likely end up being unhappy with it and wanting something more functional and less janky. The O-Box is a fantastic mattebox...

Here's one of the recent threads on matteboxes. http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?74177-MATTEBOX-What-s-your-preference

Did you have the Micro Mattebox? http://store.redrockmicro.com/Catalog/microMatteBox-for-Red-One/microMatteBoxBundleforRedOnecamera

I'm curious if this version is smaller than the one you owned. It does have 19mm option (which is what I'm using) and also a 'swing away arm' and the price is incredibly affordable.

There's no such thing as a micro mattebox in terms of sizing... it's just their confusing naming scheme. Everything's a MicroSomething from redrock. There is one size (HUGE) and the only difference is 15mm or 19mm mounting, basically.

I did check out the other Mattebox thread and I agree the Oconner O Box looks really nice. I'm also intrigued with the Movcam MB MM5. I like the fact that it takes the large 5.6 X 5.6 filters as well has a really large aperture for wide barrel lenses which is exactly what my Red 18-85mm lens has. It is also a swing away and comes with a 19mm rod adapter.

+1 on the Obox,

Just upgraded from a Genus MB to the O'connor Obox, its beautifully made and solid as a rock, very happy with it. Great size for RED primes too.

I love the idea of using Ogrips on the side in a shoulder rig senario.

I have the Arri MB-20 which is perfect for that! Awesome 5,6 x 3 trays, all rotating!

I was looking at the micro matte box for use with rods and the fact that its a decent build, plus the price isn't bad.

If you're using it exclusively with RED lenses, the RED Matte Box looks awesome. It clamps on and will eventually have a module for rods. It's super light and the price isn't bad.

I was also looking at the Obox, seems to be really good for the price too.

Movcam MB MM5 is HEAVY, not ideal for handheld but a solid mattebox! Went with the O-Box with added Chrosziel swing away bracket and I like it a lot!

Just ordered the O-Box based on this thread (cancelled my microMattebox order).

I´m going to mount on 15 mm rods, so I also ordered the Bellows Ring and three reduction rings. But what if the reduction rings don't fit exactly? Does this matter?

Anything will fit better than the sad little donuts that come with the Redrock mattebox.

HaH!!!!!!

Life is way to short to deal with foam donuts, I would never buy a MB offering this system for lens docking...however real donuts are another matter.
