  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

Eye tracking autofocus would dislocate it from the current cinema camera market. Canon RF mount can do that... the little screen on top can do that... if its canon tech inside it can do that.

it would, and it can,
but it won't, and we know that :)
but i don care , im still gettin it , S35 6k even if it's only up to 30 fps in R3D , no propitiatory media - beautiful!

I mean, seriously, the most important thing I need is a good DR, 6K sensor that at least is able to do 50-60 fps maximum.

Ahhh that's better.

For Komodo, if i had a choice between:

A) 6k @ 30fps 5:1 + Canon-level DPAF in small form factor
B) 6K @ 60fps 5:1

I'd choose A every time. I've got other cams for higher frame rate.

As a DSMC2 owner, and hydrogen owner, who purchased it for its advertised monitoring capability, but now an owner, who then expected at least a pocket cam that Jim showed at Hydrogen night Red studios:

Jarred, can you explain the reason for this camera?

As I have seen others ask.

Just above someone says it's a travel cam. Or a gimbal cam. But, if I have 8K, why would I put 6k camera on a gimbal, or not carry a FEW extra pounds when traveling and take my DSMC2?

I am anxiously awaiting DSMC3... But I would really love some explanation how it went from smartphone sized camera module prototype to this, since it appears a LOT of resource is going into it? Komodo.

If Jarred actually responds to this, I have one other question/request.

Since this is Full frame ("full frame"?) can GDU PLEASE release an oplf DSMC2 speed booster so we with our paltry DSMC2 S35s can keep up with the arm$ race? Compared to that flashy Komodocam. Please.

seriously. i guess you dont really follow the situation closely enough but Jim gave multiple excuses, reasons and apologies for the modules not being able to happen. so i would say go to the hydrogen forum and reread it all, it's too much to get in to here.
what most of us concluded is the Komodo must of been in the thoughts of RED before hydrogen and now just merging the advantage of buying a hydrogen and making it up to the people that did, there will be a special place for hydrogen owners with in the Komodo, but it hasnt been made clear if it's just a discount, or first dibs and a discount, or if there will be a way to monitor via hydrogen with a hard mount connection. oh, and it's not full frame, we have already been told that too.

we also dont have the answer to why there is a Komodo because there is no specs yet, all still a mystery. personally i think a lot of us like that it's small, doesnt require a whole case of v-mounts and charging system, had 4k sdi output, and records to cheaper off the shelf media.

I would assume based on the fact that the mounting pins look pretty similar to those on the hydrogen that the phone could act as a monitor for it. No idea how they'd physically connect though. The back of the hydrogen doesn't appear to have anything to lock anything too.

I guess the question is whether there is any method to slave two together and have them display in 3D on the screen.

What other modules did Hydrogen promise?

cheers

Agree. I think when people get super fast zooms like the new canon with internal motors.... That combined with intelligent AI driven focusing is the next big thing. Sure you can improve on picture and resolution DR and sensitivity. But frankly picture quality I think can be difficult to push noticeable further especially for red, monstro and gemini is two incredibly capable cameras in that regard. But yes, they are difficult to run off and shoot your skate video with, not like the little Sonys and others that just locks focus on target and makes it pretty much perfect.

So to me easiest way to march forward for red. Especially with this camera.

1. Intelligent AI driven focus. Also possible with off board monitors over link and Eye scan etc. Done trough a loupe viewfinder ontop on the onboard monitor would be a game changer for sure.
2. Running internal gyros and have good tools to implement the data from the RF mounted lens to counter steer camera shake, rolling shutter from camera move etc.
3. 4K monitoring. You think you are ok with HD until you bring a big 60" display to set and see what you shoot live in UHD... Simply put when clients see it there is no going back.

You are awesome with teasing Jarred... I love this picture... best of all... So excited!!!

Now I feel (Komodo)

Comodo (Spanish)= Confortable

Gracias amigo!

:)

Likely something to do with those little shiny gold pins on the top of the camera....

Certainly looks like it. It also could be an abyssal void to stare into your soul, but going with the more likely answer.

And nobody seems to be curious about "antenna" on there?

Wow just saw that.... sick!!! This is getting too awesome!!!

Argh I just want this announced. Clients keep asking for gimbals when they can't afford a proper gimbal setup (Movi with op), and so far everything small enough to be on a Ronin-S looks video-y. Now test footage of the SH1 is looking pretty close to Red quality, but I have a feeling Komodo will make me regret buying an SH1...

no one does, and it might not physically connect to an H1, maybe there will be an H2? maybe that connection is a new monitor connection for dsmc3? looks like on the other picture there is a mount connected with a smallhd monitor.

and no other modules were ever mentioned that i remember.

Yea exactly. Love what Panasonic is doing, but prefer the RF Mount, Red IQ, and obviously the internal raw capture. Love the S1H, and surely the 6K raw that comes out of it will be great, but it still isn't set up for video quite like the Komodo is going to be. And I do think Canon has turned a corner with the C500 Mark II, so hopefully their new few models in the RF-mount range will offer quite a bit more than the EOS R did.

That could be exactly what this image shows. Attachment mount for the H1-H2 phones.

I feel dumb. Something just came together for me, maybe I missed it discussed earlier.

Cheap monitoring solutions are cool, but the longer term potential impact could be the not so rudimentary beginnings of Z-axis integration.

I don't know if there's enough processing power in there this round, but by using a Hydrogen and a Komodo you have essentially put a stereoscopic depth deriving tool on top of your imaging device, to which you are also feeding 2D video. The autofocus could be derived from hydrogen as well as rough depth metadata in 2D frame regions could be dumped back into the R3D stream.

There are issues no doubt. Alignment, bandwidth, real-time processing power totally. But the idea is there. All you need to get to is "pretty good" and it could be, well, magic basically.

Anyway. Beyond my math, but the concept is cool.

Actually on that image it looks like a SmallHD or similar screen.

Its the SmallHD 5" Focus SDI monitor.

On a side note, having 4K SDI is finally going to be awesome for critical focusing on external monitors.

I’m running a BMPCC6K on Ronin S and it looks pretty good to me.

Komodo looks cool and all, but everyone is doing 6K now. Sure RED might do better 6K than the rest, but i'd rather save up and upgrade my SW to Helium.

Is it, though? The SDI connector doesn't seem to be there at all. I know it has the angled cutout that the HDMI version doesn't have, but I have an odd feeling that it's perhaps a prototype display using an existing casing.

Alright alright Watson. I'll get my investigative Deerstalker's Cap, OCD oral fixation bubble pipe, and magnification image inspection monocle.

After closer examination of the image there are a few interesting things to be found in the Mike Will B&W image.

- It looks like the SmallHD Focus SDI, not the HDMI model, but it appears the SDI connector is missing in action
- The thing that mounts the camera to the monitor appears to have two features that are not detectable in this image
- Mike's right hand reveals he is holding what appears to be a GDU Cowboy Handle or perhaps something new
- Mike's left hand there appears to be a slender accessory mounting bracket on the Komodo body, which is likely how the handle is mounted on the other side
- The base plate appears to be an 80mm GDU Touch N' Go Plate

The display could be something new, could be something modified, or Jarred could have photochopped things out.

Off to go fence with Moriarty.

No question Komodo can be an “A Camera”. Same way a 5D MKII and a DVX-100 can still be an “A Camera”...if so desired.

The GH2 was a pretty sweet little “A Camera” for a lot of people as well.

With that said, Crossing fingers for a full-frame 4K 120fps Komodo.
