  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Great Gatsby VFX

I think you mean, 'where will production be in 20 years?' ...and the answer is that it will all be in "post".

Honestly this is amazing CG and FX work but... this it not cinematography. I think its so sad and still fake looking to see all of these models instead of just building the damn sets or renting the sets. They aren't saving money by doing it in post, so whats the advantage really? to shoot quick? I just dont get it. I understand some shots are impossible, but I saw tons in that reel that could have been shot practically, but it wasnt. I saw soo much difference from the shot footage to the fx footage that it wasn't even the same of anything. The DP's lighting choices were not all that pretty (i dont know if by default that choice or just bad choice) but it was all fixed in post. NOT the way I like to shoot. I shape light for real. Sorry but for my features and projects I'm a DP on, I'll be doing my own REAL lighting. Sorry thats not really showing any craft if you let the billion dollar post guys fix it all for you.

I would have much rather seen that money put into a large backlot set, or existing location. I know first hand these places exist, I live on long island where some of these houses are, and they are film friendly... I like real footage. Sorry for the rant, great vfx work, but this is not the art of cinematography to me at all. It's a touch up. patch up. whatever else you wanna call it. most shots they replaced the whole damn car, and everything else around it and only left the actors.... whats the point then? I understand all the technical behind it, but it just seems so wasteful. Its why I HATED Indiana Jones 4, because clearly everything was fake. The whole fun of IJ series is that everything was IN CAMERA. Thats great work, not bluescreen/green screen everything. I use keying all the time, but not to replace my whole work. end rant.

It seems like Hollywood is back to the old way of filming, back to the studios and building sets. the look has always been great and has put them on the map in the old days. studio lighting doesn't have to be change a lot and when you come back to the set after a while you keep the same look. People requested a more natural look but the bottom line is you can get more done at a faster pace in a studio with green screen, FX & CGI than filming outside like we do. The old way has and always will look great. Hollywood ways of making movies is one bad motha fo ya when you can't tell what's real from fake. Me being a real world shooter has to fight the elements to master a great film from the real world, I guess you can say we have to learn how to master making beautiful movies from the natural world.

That would be sad.
