  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is Helium the next sensor after Dragon?

Hi Jarred,
Yeah, is there a ballpark figure available for Epic MX upgrades as well? I have a scarlet w on order while still shooting on my Epic, but would love to upgrade the epic as well. Also the Bentley suite at St. Regis? :)

Thanks chief

Kris

This is, again, great news! Jarred, please consider also an Epic Dragon to Higher end Helium option, because many of us still didn't upgrade our Epic Dragons and basically its similar to those that took their Weapon upgrade. The pricing I personally expect to be the same as the already on Weapon gang.

Those that went to Weapon benefited from the upgraded performance of the Dragon sensor, the color, low light and OLPF upgrade benefits of the new system. This time its not a matter of "those that believed in Red vs those that stayed behind". I obviously talk for myself, but as I financially wasn't able to afford the immediate weapon jump after my Dragon upgrade, I hope you have us in mind and give us options to both flavours of Helium!

Not asking for cheaper than the current weapon guys or those that made the Epic Dragon to Weapon first. Just want a similar price- basically the weapon upgrade + the Helium sensor deal!

I'm still undecided of going Carbon or Magnesium here! Will there be a difference of Weapon Carbon Helium and Weapon Magnesium Helium? Will Epic Magnesium Helium Be this Epic W?

Will definitely want to keep my frame rates for my motorsport films- This year is the 50th anniversary of our Motorcycle GP!

Epic Dragon will have a path to Helium.. but it's not gonna be the same price as the already on Weapon guys ... the Weapons just need sensors to goto Helium, Epic Dragons need a whole new camera... maybe i just didn't understand you.

Mg can go sideways to Epic-W ( cheaper ) or upwards to Weapon Helium ( more expensive ) . Mg owners pay considerably less than the others to goto Epic-W as they only need to pay the sensor cost to goto Epic-W, which is around how much you would pay to stay at the Bentley suite in the St. Regis hotel for a single night.

lol I already heard Brent's JarRedRadar going off in the middle of typing that.

Would love to see a breakdown of the differences between Mg and Epic-W...I get so confused with these two!

What are most people more excited about? 8k S35 or 8K Vista Vision sized sensor?
Some people may have sold off their S35 glass in preparation for VV and yet VV might not become a normal format for most shoots making S35 the smart way to go.
That being said, hype can go a long way in the business and a DP and director who wants to offer VV to their clients could take advantage of the hype of this format in the early days until it either becomes a standard or Helium becomes the norm.

Does either Epic-W or Weapon Helium mean just a sensor upgrade cost for MG owners? Is Epic-W considered better than Weapon MG? Or will it loose high speed capabilites? The bottom line is, will 8K in Epic-W reduce possible frame rates in 35mm to like 60 fps? If Epic-W is a "sideways" upgrade, that would mean it might be a trade-off scenario between high speed vs 8K. Weapon MG for up to 96 fps 35mm or 8K 35mm at only 60 fps max with high compression.
Or do we have actual specs for the Epic-W available right now?

Comparing the Helium to the Dragon in terms of everything other than resolution, what is the other improvements? MX to Dragon featured not just a resolution bump but a ton other things as well. We know the DR is about the same, but what more? Since we now also have a new color science coming to Dragon, how will these differ from each other?

:)))) That was one classy hint. Thank you! - http://www.businessinsider.com/the-bentley-suite-at-the-st-regis-hotel-2012-9

So basically we have 10K for the sensor + the already known 20K price difference between Mg and Cf.

I wonder what are the limitations on the Epic-W compared to the Stormtrooper/"Cf-W"

Hard to say what most people are excited about. My current shoot that I'm Directing and DPing is sort of beautiful on the 8K VV and I'm very happy it's here and working hard.

It's a tricky choice because it is a game of formats and lenses. I prepared heavily for 8K VV and have several glass options, but I also have an S35 glass investment that makes me super excited about Helium + all my glass that I've readied for 8K VV works on it as well.

Helium is the new sensor and there will be two flavors when it comes out in October... both at the high end of our line up , in the form of Weapon Helium and Epic-W. It takes the faster internals so isn't a direct upgrade from Scarlet-W or Raven. There will however be a special price for existing customers to move to Epic-W from Scarlet-Ws, Epic Dragons, and Epic MXs.

Bummer - no Scarlet-D...

Yes sir... Im serious if you are serious :) Would love to see you. Sorry about the weird time.. I only have 5 minutes before I need to leave tomorrow but it's all yours if you want it.

:D you seriously rock, J!

Would you then consider (and deduct) the cost of the Dragon sensor going out?, I assume that is still gonna be super useful in some other combo

But we're not in a brand new luxury car. We've stepped inside the Bentley suite at the St. Regis Hotel in New York, which was officially unveiled today. Click here to jump right to the photos >>
The $9,500-a-night suite, which was designed by Bentley, is the storied hotel's third designer showcase room.

Just had a few minutes to play with one Helium yesterday but it seems 2000-2500 ISO will be as clean or better than 800 on DRAGON... with a smaller noise pattern.
Processing 8K data flow (if you want to shoot with no crop at s35) will not allow the same frame rates than a 6K camera like the Weapon Dragon 6K so probably a S35 camera better suited for narrative than commercial / extreme sports...

Things could also get interesting in the lower end with Helium if some day a smaller 4.5 or 4K crop version is released within RAVEN territory... a 4K broadcast module and a s16 - 2/3 inch image size could go a long way in doc / TV / Live ;)
There are a lot of nice s16 lenses / b4 mount lenses

I have them both and they are both insane - pretty much "hard to even believe cameras".

I think most folks here who are questioning this - they will be able to get - and make their money back - on Helium before they can even get a VV.

Transparently ... I hope EVERYONE buys Helium so I can get more VV's faster :)
