  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is Helium the next sensor after Dragon?

This sounds vaugely ominous. Sounds like Epic-Dragon owners should upgrade to Weapon STAT.

I keep thinking maybe I should have kept my Epic Dragon and waited a bit before jumping to MgW. Then again Red is always good to early adopters. MgW is pretty badass so I'm looking forward to seeing where is falls in the Red lineup among the Helium line both on specs and upgrade (sidegrade) costs.

You know what I learned today? That Jarred Land is a man of his word! Jarred even let me hold his "Ranger" for at least a full minute. None of this 10 seconds stuff! Everything was going fine until some dude Photo Bombed us at RED Studios Hollywood. They'll let anybody on that lot these days...sheesh!

Jarred, your generosity is inspiring. Its fantastic to see someone such as yourself, who earned everything you've got, share with others that are trying to better themselves and make an impact in this industry and world.

I try to take the same approach and provide opportunities for others when I am in a fortunate position and seeing your continued examples of giving back are moving.

Rock on!

I am referring to their quote of Jarred. Maybe I am reading it wrong?

“JL: ‘SCARLET-W uses the same sensor as the 6K DRAGON, but only has an active 5K image area. We are the only company other than Sony in this market that designs both our own ASICs and sensors, so we can leverage yields in the manufacturing process to accommodate an array of products in different price points that all share the same DNA.’ “

Let’s not confused SCARLET-W with RAVEN. RAVEN is 4.5K DRAGON sensor. SCARLET-W is the DRAGON 6K sensor with active 5K image area…

Actually, the exact opposite of “ominous”… For EPIC DRAGON, there is good news now (existing upgrade programs) and good news coming down the pike.

Yes...I figured that out after you pointed it out. I knew I had read something about a 6K sensor with a smaller active area....All good.

QQ-

I have an Epic Dragon-M. Will the current upgrade path to Weapon be continued after the October announcement? You guys seem to indicate that an upgrade path directly to Helium is in the works??!!

Wondering if I should sell it now, upgrade to W (15k) or wait 'till Helium upgrade path (guessing 25k-30k)?

Stuff like this warms the cockles of my black, black heart. I was casting next door all last week, I should have made a point to drop by the store, at least, but... deadlines.

And watching that guy get the bang stick on here was interesting. Not because he was strongly encouraged to withdraw his deposit for a camera. People have been banned or whatever before. But because I don't spend as much time here as many of you do, and so I hadn't felt Jarred's personal angst over this delay. It's clear that this, as he said 'fuck-up' (debatable, I think- shit happens) in deliveries really personally affects him, he knows we're having to pay many thousands of dollars in rentals because our cameras aren't here, and that bothers him.

Things like this makes me want to support RED even more.

Hey Jarred/Brent,

I've got a slightly different question regarding Hellium...

My Dragon Epic is over at RED currently awaiting upgrade to Mg Weapon. Its been there for about six weeks now due to the sensor glut that's going on. I've gotten in touch with my bomb squad rep a bunch about when I can expect the camera to be sent back and there does not appear to be an end in sight for the foreseeable future. This is not RED's fault necessarily... I didn't send my camera when I was allocated as I was waiting for an invoice that came about 3 months later than it should have. Anyhow, given I stand to lose a fair bit of money because of the delay, I was wondering if it may be smarter for me to get my Dragon sent back to me and then just do the upgrade in one to Helium? I read one of your posts that suggested that Helium would be a bit less of production headache so was thinking that it may be a smarter move to skip Weapon all together and upgrade from it without having received the body. I would then upgrade to Helium when the line is running smoother and not be as badly caught up. It would mean not doing a few more weeks now and a couple of weeks later in the year.. instead just a single two week block!

So basically... if I take my old cam back and aim for Helium - is there a possibility it will actually lessen the time the camera is in upgrade purgatory?

thank you brent, for calming my epic dragon nerves until october.

I have a theory about the RED upcoming "simplification" of line-up.

Since "Weapon" is a body type, I always found weird that Weapon MG and Weapon CF don't have the same horsepower (max fps, 2k vs 4k prores, etc).
And with Jarred statement that "Mg owners pay considerably less [...] as they only need to pay the sensor cost to goto Epic-W", i think that :

- Weapon CF body will be renamed as "Weapon" body. Can handle Dragon 6K, Helium 8K and VV 8K sensors.

- Weapon MG body will be renamed as "Epic" body (or Epic-W). Can handle Dragon 6K and Helium 8K sensors.

Only a theory of course. What do you think? :)

Would be nice. I like.

This all depends on whether you prefer to have a Weapon Helium or Epic W.
