  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is Helium the next sensor after Dragon?

You know what I learned today? That Jarred Land is a man of his word! Jarred even let me hold his "Ranger" for at least a full minute. None of this 10 seconds stuff! Everything was going fine until some dude Photo Bombed us at RED Studios Hollywood. They'll let anybody on that lot these days...sheesh!

Nothing has changed since Day 1. Truly a family with RED. Big love.

I need to use my mentalist abilities to make them say something more......anyway I am super happy to be part of the family, I am having a lot of fun with my SW and with all this new stuff...you are making me crazy! Lol....

Mark, since Epic-W in Helium would hardly have a smaller sensor then S35. So I think it is safe to say - yes, it is 8K with Helium... ;o)

P

Not so Peter.

8K on Helium is technically LARGER than S35. Not much - but a wee bit. So ... Epic-W COULD be an S35 at slightly less than 8K.

Super 35mm film is standardized at 24.9×18.7mm (31.1 diagonal)

8K Helium = 29.9 x 15.77 (33.8 diagonal))

I'm very curious what the technical differences will be. Since, IMO, upgrade path FROM Helium upward is kinda a mute point as this sensor will hold it's ground for many years.

I have a hard time thinking that a few framerates and compression settings is gonna be enough to separate the models with respect to a price delta that has been rumored - but I'm sure Jarred has a master plan.

My gut is Epic-W will be under 8K. Which would be fine. This sensor looks awesome even cropped to 4K.

Do people think that the two Helium sensor sizes will be :

+) 8K and Less-than-8K

OR

+) 8k and LARGER than 8K?

OR

+) 8k (Existing Small pixel pitch) and 8k VV (Dragon sized pixels of Helium sensor material)

Still need to see some dragon vs helium side by sides in different environments, I hope red releases specs soon

I wish

7K Helium = 24.9×18.7mm (31.1 diagonal)

You wouldn't rather wish for Helium to just be 8k for EpicW?
That's what I'm crossing my fingers for

RED generally doesn't take steps backwards, so I'd guess the two flavours would be VV (~12k?) and s35 (8k)... though I suppose a 6k Scarlet-Helium could be in the works too.

In any case, if the trade in value for an Epic-X is only a couple grand, I'll be on the prowl for a used one.

I'm sorry but that sounds stupid. Why go 7K when you can get 8K? The cost reduction of choosing a smaller 7k cut would be negligible. 8K sells better too.
Epic-W will simply be a lower data-rate version. 8:1 at 8k instead of 5:1

Perhaps. But but by that logic why make 5K and 4.5K cuts of Dragon?

Regardless, I think Epic-W will be 6.5K, which is approx s35, as opposed to 8K thats s35+.

Isnt 6.5K approx S35 on Helium?

If 8K Helium is approx same size as 6K Dragon (both are S35+ sensors).

Then stands to reason 6.5K Helium would be equivalent to 5K Dragon for S35.

Which is why I think Epic-W will be 6.5K

Helium is a sensor upgrade, so I'd imagine it'll be in all the camera models before too long (NAB17 mayhap?).

I was under the impression that cutting different sized sensors actually drives costs up or, at the very least, time (they set aside an entire month dedicated to Raven sensors).... With that in mind I could see Raven-Helium 6k (limited fps), Scarlet-Helium 6k (unlimited fps), Epic-Helium 8k (limited fps), Weapon-Helium 8k (unlimited fps), Weapon VV Helium ~12k... then a premium for CF/Forged over Alu/Mg...

...Conversely, Raven5K, Scarlet6K, Epic7K, Weapon8K, and VV 16K, would be a nice & simple, OCD-friendly, all-helium line-up.

Raven has the same 6K sensor, but with a smaller active sensor area.

I would expect Raven or scarlet to have 6.5k. But Epic? Hell no! 8K all the way baby.

I would think Epic W is 8k but with slower frame rates vs the "premium Helium."

Perhaps. But Scarlet-W had a smaller cut of Dragon wafer (5K vs 6K), so wouldn't be a big surprise if Epic-W had smaller cut of Helium sensor as well (the 6.5K cut I've been guessing at).

Guess we'll find out in October!

What I want to know is this.. I have an epic dragon sitting here. All I want is to upgrade the brain to weapon mg. no extras..(keep the case, the olpfs, the top handle, base expander, xl mod, sidekick).. Upgraded before nab 2015.. Would this ever be a possibility?

The only thing that would work would be the top handle. The OLPF system changed, so did the back of the camera for the electronics connection. Weapon upgrade means all new accessories unfortunately.

I completely understand this. You mis understood. I own a lot of dsmc2 aks now (SW owner). At first it was meant to be my b-cam but I love the new SW and have been shooting almost everything on it. But the epic is here.. I just don't have the money to come out and buy an upgrade (package) was wondering if they could just send me a brain
