  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Introducing Epic-W 8K

It does, since RedCine-X V42.x (Added: HELIUM 8K accelerated decoding with RED ROCKET-X + GPU (high-end GPU recommended).)

I can't seem to find an answer on this:

Does the rocket-x work to accelerate helium footage?

I can't say for sure but I've seen others ask this question and the answer was usually no.

From REDLINE-X v42 released yesterday :

REDCINE-X PROFESSIONAL BUILD 42 RELEASE

CHANGES IN THIS BUILD
ADDED: HELIUM 8K ACCELERATED DECODING WITH RED ROCKET-X + GPU (HIGH-END GPU RECOMMENDED).

Is there any word on an Epic-W 6K version? I like the option of the Epic-W 8K Helium but I hate the fact that the crop factor is so horrible. I can't imagine too many productions being able to afford or want to shoot in 8K and if you go all the way down to 4K, then you are now getting a 1.6x crop factor!? Would love to see the price point of a Epic-W 6K.

It is my understanding that the FOV on the Weapon sensor if shot at 5k will be the same as the Dragon sensor at 5k. So surely it doesn't matter which version you get? The Weapon at 8k has a FOV similar to an Alexa 65 for example, it's huge.

You are mistaken. 8K Helium is almost the exact same sensor size as 6K Dragon. So 5K is a smaller "sensor" on Helium than on Dragon. Use Phil Holland's tool to compare, here is a link to 5K Dragon vs 5K Helium:

6K Epic-W is essentially the Weapon CF or Forged but with a smaller data rate. Until last week, there was the Weapon Mg. That is apparently the camera you wanted, so you should have bought it then :). But Red has made it clear that putting a Dragon sensor in the Epic-W will be possible down the road, just not right now as the Dragon demand is beyond supply.

I am in the queue for the Epic-W but would much prefer a larger sensor like the Dragon. It does seem like there is a hole in the lineup right now, in that if you want a DSMC2 Red camera with a Dragon sensor you need to pay 49K for the Weapon Woven. The option to replace the Helium sensor in the Epic-W with a sensor that was super 35mm size at 5K or 6K would be very much appreciated down the line. In the meantime I guess the only option is buying a used Weapon MG or stumping up 25K for the old Epic-Dragon.

Or the $10K Scarlet-W... and I will note it once again... if today you could buy the equivalent of an Epic-W with Dragon instead of Helium, you'd be in for a wait, the same way Scarlet-W people are waiting. Dragon has a back log. Do you think Red WANTED to discontinue Weapon Mg? They made a decision apparently to let the current production of Dragon sensors go Weapon Woven or Scarlet-W. When Dragon yield numbers come back around, you'll see the equivalent of an Epic-W with a Dragon sensor. These are all deductions based on what Jarred said in regard to Weapon Helium and Epic-W bodies being able to pay for factory sensor swaps. But he implied that that is a future thing as they are trying their best to keep up with demands for Dragon sensor.

Dragon and Helium are virtually the same size. Read the specs and look at this (yes, Phil's tool again). They just aren't the same size at the same resolution. They have the same FOV at their largest resolution.

For example, these FOVs are nearly identical:
Helium 8K FF = Dragon 6K FF
Helium 7K FF = Dragon 5K FF
Helium 6K FF = Dragon 4K FF (in this case, the FOV on Helium is about 10% larger)

This is the camera I'm waiting for. In the meantime my epic dragon is killing it

Just messing around with the Epic-W. The workflow is still rough as I can't import 8k into FCPX like my normal workflow going from RCX simple grade to FCPX to finish grade. Had to export 4K pro res files from RCX for FCPX.

HI Patrick,

Great video, thanks for sharing.

In the video that Mark Toia did (http://www.red.com/news/introducing...omepage_slide&utm_campaign=Resolution_Matters) He film with the Weapon 8K S35. About 1:22 in to the film there is a comparison to notice levels between Epic Dragon 6K and Helium Weapon 8K in 200 iso. Would you say that the same kind of quality different is just as notable when filming with the Epic Weapon 8K?

That much differens in noise is really something. I current have the Scarlet Weapon 5K, but Im seriously thinking about do an upgrade.

Also, whats is the lowest compression rate when filming in 25p, 7K (50 fps and 100 fps) You can't do it in 8K, but I assume you can do in 7K?

Thanks
/Conny

Wow the blacks are incredibly clean at 1600 ISO! Jeez, and that's no noise reduction correct? Thanks for sharing Patrick!
