  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Introducing Epic-W 8K

Can someone let me know what the crop factors are for 8k & 6k?

http://phfx.com/tools/formatCompare/

Everyone needs to learn this tool.

Crop Factor compared to what other format? That question is why using the tool is the best choice.

The format comparison is pretty intuitive. If you want to compare to FF DSLR, use the KODAK FILM > 3:2 Stills

Phil if you are reading this, for those comparing to DSLR, it might be nice to have a drop down for both Canon and Nikon DSLR FF and APS-C/DX sensors. And do you have a tip jar?

EDIT: Hi Phil... seems we are looking at the same thread :)

This is great. Thanks so much Red.

My only request. Since 6.5K specs are a bit nebulous at this time, is there anyway (upcoming firmware if it doesn't exist already) we can have 60fps Full Frame at 6.5K?

Since 6.5K seems to be closest to 3 perf Super 35mm, it's what I will be shooting at most of the time and 60fps is such a sweet spot for myself and clients.

Just this one request and I will shut up.

Thanks for the samples as well Andy.

I'm curious about 6.5K, what the max frames are for 2:1 and WS?
And what the best redcode is for 25fps at 8K?

cheers
Paul

I am not sure where to address this but I am running into some issues with my Epic-W.
Recording 8K WS RAW 25fps, 512GB minimag. After 7-10 secs I get Audio Buffer Error. Turned Audio off, same problem.

After another attempt, another error "Pease save log and send to Red" and camera shuts down.
What is going on? Anyone else who alreadyhave the camera have this issue?

Went down to 6K WS, after maybe 20 secs, "error save log ..., then camera shuts down.

Furthermore, Epic-W does not recognise GDU lenses.

Brent, Jarred? Any Idea?

Wild guess but try setting your compression lower. 10:1 amd try agin.
It's probably yellow for some reason.

Thanks Jaimy. I went up to 8:1 compression (from 5:1) and recorded for 2 minutes. Then stopped manually.
So, lower compression currently won't work?

On the specsheet it says 6:1 max at 8KFF 24fps.
What I think is when setting are yellow there is something going on you need to check. With compression however normally the ones you can't use are greyed out.
Maybe that's not working on this firmware. I would suggest keeping an eye on the color of the compression setting. White is good.

Is there any word on an Epic-W 6K version? I like the option of the Epic-W 8K Helium but I hate the fact that the crop factor is so horrible. I can't imagine too many productions being able to afford or want to shoot in 8K and if you go all the way down to 4K, then you are now getting a 1.6x crop factor!? Would love to see the price point of a Epic-W 6K.

So fantastic, Jarred! We are super amped to get our EPIC-W 8K and WEAPON 8K S35.

So when it says Full Frame next to 8K, 7K, 6K, .... 2K are we using the entire sensor for each resolution? No more crop sensor recording? (insert excited kid gif here)

I'm not Jarred but nope.
FF stands for an aspect ratio, the same as ws, 2:1 or HD.
So 7,6,5,4,3,2K FF is still windowed down.
